Presently, information professionals are progressively dependent on information and communication technologies to complete their everyday tasks. As, result dependence on PC frameworks, programming and data innovation-related technologies are increasing for better working and providing quality services. Therefore, to understand, analyze and evaluate the acceptance and use of this technology several models of technology acceptance and use have been formulated in information science literature. Using eight such models, Venkatesh, Morris, Davis and Davis proposed a unified model called the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology or (UTAUT) model. The UTAUT model has been studied and analyzed in various spheres …

Editing Scholarly Communication In The Age Of Information And Communication Technology, Philip Chike Aghadiuno
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The need to properly edit typed-written manuscripts before they are published is not new in the academic circles. What is relatively new is that editing tasks can be handled with the aid of a word processor through “Track Changes,” a useful feature on Microsoft Word which keeps track of the editors activities on the drafts. This paper examines the practice of editing scholarly communication vis-à-vis the application of modern technologies to ensure manuscripts meet acceptable publishing requirements in all matters of grammar, usage, style, diction, spelling, punctuation, among others.

Patients entering an inpatient psychiatry program (N = 406) with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders reported on their social support networks (source, type) at treatment intake, and completed symptom measures at baseline and 3-, 9-, and 15-month follow-ups (77%). Longitudinal growth models found aspects of participants’ support networks were associated with specific symptoms over time. Less family support (i.e., more conflict) was the most consistent predictor of mental health and substance use outcomes and was associated with greater psychiatric, depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and drug use severity. More peer support (via mutual-help involvement) was associated with …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A School-Based Intervention On Driving-Related Carbon Emissions Using Real-Time Transportation Data, Eugene Cordero, Diana Centeno
Mineta Transportation Institute
The development of tools that can measure the efficiency of individual driving behaviors offers unique opportunities to encourage drivers towards more efficient driving behaviors. As states make progress towards reducing carbon emissions through the adoption of renewable energy for electricity generation, transportation remains the largest sources of carbon emissions. Although numerous local or regional campaigns have encouraged consumers to conserve energy at home and at work, less interest has been shown in encouraging drivers to adopt more energy efficient driving behaviors. In this study, a smartphone application was used to gather driving data (e.g., hard accelerations, hard braking and time …

The Prescient Librarian: Ilse Bry And "Sociobibliography", Ellen D. Gilbert
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract
In the 1960s, before computers enabled people to combine myriad terms in a single search and “interdisciplinary research” was just coming into vogue, Ilse Bry (1905-1974), a German-born émigré librarian working in New York City suggested that the lines between the behavioral sciences and individual disciplines were not as rigidly drawn as was assumed. With this in mind, she founded the Mental Health Book Review Index (1956-1974), compiling and making sense of book reviews from some 255 journals that, she believed, signaled trends in literature and the discovery of new knowledge. The essays she wrote for each issue were …

Stages Of Organisational Commitment Among Librarians In University Libraries In South-South, Nigeria, Iwat Udofia Dr., Ahiaoma Ibegwam
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
ABSTRACT
Introduction: Visits to some university libraries, backed by evidence from previous research, reveal that librarians experience low levels commitment as reflected in the high rates of turnover and absenteeism. This seems prevalent at a time Nigeria as a country is grappling with harsh economic realities, when increased commitment and extra effort are being expected of all employees to boost performance and improve service delivery. Thus, the pursuit of a deeper understanding of the means by which commitment develops is critical and warrants empirical investigation. This study, therefore, is to determine the levels of organisational commitment among librarians in university …

I first started thinking about anger and its role in the experiences of people who have fought in wars when I was in Sierra Leone, about a year after the cease-fire ended the civil war. I was working as a research assistant on a study with girls who had been child soldiers and who had given birth to children during the war. We were living in a community in the west, on the border with Guinea. At first, we met only a few young women. We listened to their stories—about the war, and about what life had been like for …

Information enables individuals to develop knowledge which can influence their health behavior and attitude while inadequate literacy about health information is associated with poor understanding of medical advice and negative health outcomes among the population. Skin bleaching is a health practice involving the (mis)use of chemical solutions to change one’s complexion to a lighter tone. This paper investigated the viability of using the concept of health information literacy to reduce skin bleaching by reviewing previous empirical studies on skin bleaching with emphasis on health information. Finding showed that skin bleaching is driven by a self-destructive, unattainable beauty standard. It also …

The findings revealed a positive significant relationship between IT competence skill and their use of e-portal (r= .190, p<0.05). Gender has a significant influence on the use of e-portal (t=2.071, p<0.05) also, respondents age has a significant influence on use of e-portal (F (3; 246) =2.892; p<0.05). The study concluded that IT competence skills and demographic characteristics of undergraduates have an influence on the use of E-portal. It is recommended that higher institutions of learning in Nigeria should further explore the potentials of E-portal for its teaching, learning and research.
