This study explores sex differences in the relationship between childhood cyberbullying victimization (CCBV) and young adult sexual assault experiences and the potential moderating roles of childhood parent monitoring and deviant peer association on the relationship. A total of 356 college students aged 19–25 in the US participated in the online survey. The results indicated that CCBV was associated with an increased risk of college sexual assault victimization for both males and females. A significant moderating effect of childhood parental monitoring and deviant peer association was found between the association between CCBV and college sexual assault victimization for female students only.

Opioid Use Knowledge And Attitudes Among U.S. Adults, Jadyn E. Knox
Master's Theses
The opioid epidemic remains a public health crisis, with overdose rates continuing to rise. Associations between individuals opioid use and knowledge of and attitudes toward opioid substances and overdoses have been investigated to inform educational interventions. However, many studies utilize college student or adolescent samples, and findings remain inconclusive. An assessment of opioid knowledge and attitudes across broader adult populations is lacking. Concurrently, replication literature in the social sciences is limited, therefore, the present study replicated and expanded upon Williams et al. (2013) and Vyas et al. (2023) studies. Reliability and validity of the Opioid Knowledge scale, Opioid Overdose Knowledge …
Immigrant Firms’ Commitment And Survival: Does Owner Identity Matter?, Nathaniel C. Lupton, Sarika Pruthi, Alfredo Jiménez
Immigrant Firms’ Commitment And Survival: Does Owner Identity Matter?, Nathaniel C. Lupton, Sarika Pruthi, Alfredo Jiménez
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
How does immigrant ownership influence small firm survival in comparison with that of family ownership? While it is generally accepted that socioemotional wealth (SEW) preservation motivates family firms to avoid taking risks, this effect has not been considered in immigrant-owned firms. Many of the same affinity factors are likely to influence the survival of both ownership types, but we argue that immigrant-owned firms may experience them more strongly as they reside at the intersection of the liabilities of smallness and foreignness. Drawing on a large sample of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Ecuador, we find that immigrant-owned firms have …

While global interest in K–12 AI and ML education grows, many African education systems lack foundational computing education beyond basic computer literacy. This creates unique challenges for AI integration in countries where computer science isn’t part of the K–12 curriculum. Teachers are central to this effort, but little is known about what motivates them to engage with these technologies or how they use them. This study examined what motivates K–12 teachers to engage with AI and ML in Botswana. Using a mixed-methods approach, we surveyed 59 teachers using an adapted version of the Motivation to Teach Computer Science (MTCS) scale …

Unravelling Antecedents And Bidirectional Impacts Of Nurse Work Rumination: A Scoping Review To Enhance Nurses’ Well-Being And Improve Nursing Quality, Wenjun Hu, Xiaofeng Xie, Xun Xu, Siying Wei, Ling Zhu, Yawen An
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Background Globally, work rumination is a common phenomenon related to nurse burnout. However, most existing studies focus on the single negative impacts of rumination, with less exploration of its dual effects and antecedents. Therefore, comprehensively exploring the effect of nurse work rumination and its influencing factors is crucial for enhancing the accuracy of nursing management. Objectives Identify the antecedents and dual effects of nurse work rumination to deepen understanding of this phenomenon and provide references for formulating interventions that enhance nurses’ well-being and improve the quality of nursing work. Eligibility criteria Included studies were original research articles focusing on work-related …

Hippocampal subfields differentially develop and age, and they vary in vulnerability to neurodegenerative diseases. Innovation in high-resolution imaging has accelerated clinical research on human hippocampal subfields, but substantial differences in segmentation protocols impede comparisons of results across laboratories. The Hippocampal Subfields Group (HSG) is an international organization seeking to address this issue by developing a histologically valid, reliable, and freely available segmentation protocol for high-resolution T2-weighted 3 T MRI (http://www.hippocampalsubfields.com). Here, we report the first portion of the protocol focused on subfields in the hippocampal body; protocols for the head and tail are in development. The body protocol includes definitions …

Chronic Sleep Restriction Induces Oculomotor Impairment With Inadequate Compensation, Erin E. Flynn-Evans, Terence L. Tyson, Gregory Costedoat, Sean Pradhan, Leland S. Stone
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Study Objectives Chronic sleep loss is widespread and can cause deficits in vigilant attention. There are few practical biomarkers that can be used to assess the impact of chronic sleep loss on alertness and performance. Those that are available, such as tests of vigilant attention, cannot discriminate chronic sleep loss from other impairments, like alcohol intoxication, limiting the use of such tools. We aimed to test whether a suite of behavioral oculometrics would be sensitive, and perhaps specific, to chronic sleep restriction (CSR). Methods We conducted a randomized, counterbalanced, cross-over study to compare behavioral oculometrics following a week of 5 …

A Constructive-Engaging Analysis Of Descarrtes (European) And Oyeshile (African) On Personhood, Olanrewaju Shitta-Bey
A Constructive-Engaging Analysis Of Descarrtes (European) And Oyeshile (African) On Personhood, Olanrewaju Shitta-Bey
Comparative Philosophy
An examination of the nature of the human person provides a crucial foundation for understanding human life and identity. Conceptions of personhood have far-reaching implications beyond philosophy, influencing politics, ethics, religion, and epistemology. Beliefs about what constitutes a person shapes theories of rights, responsibility, and justice; moral views on duty and accountability; religious understandings of the soul and the afterlife; and epistemological reflections on the sources and limits of knowledge. Inquiry into human nature is therefore not merely abstract, but central to understanding social organization and individual conduct. This paper examines two influential accounts of human nature drawn from distinct …
The Coherence Of Navayāna Pragmatism: Ambedkar And The Pragmatist Reconstruction Of Buddhist Philosophy, Danish Hamid
The Coherence Of Navayāna Pragmatism: Ambedkar And The Pragmatist Reconstruction Of Buddhist Philosophy, Danish Hamid
Comparative Philosophy
This paper examines the philosophical coherence of B.R. Ambedkar’s reconstruction of his (Navayāna) Buddhism in relation to John Dewey’s pragmatism. Building on Scott Stroud’s reading of Ambedkar as a Deweyan Pragmatist (2017, 2023), it argues that Dewey’s evolutionary naturalism, his conception of growth, and pragmatic redefinition of concepts provide Ambedkar with the methodological tools for a naturalistic and socially reconstructive reinterpretation of Buddhist doctrines such as anicca (impermanence), dhamma (Buddha’s teaching), nirvāṇa (enlightenment), karuna (compassion), etc. Ambedkar transforms impermanence from a metaphysics of flux into an ethics of progressive growth, and recasts dhamma as a social morality grounded in fraternity …

Challenging The Double-Negation Principle: An Analysis Of Strategic Theories Of Sun Zi, Carnot, And Clausewitz Through Intuitionist Logic, Antonino Drago
Comparative Philosophy
To study a subject similarly represented in Eastern and Western cultures, I examine some classical theories of war strategy according to a new analytical method. This method is based on the recognition that the most important strategic theories are organized as theories essentially not deduced from axioms according to classical logic. Such theories reason through doubly negated propositions (DNPs), whose meanings differ from those of their affirmative counterparts. This corresponds to the use of intuitionist logic instead of classical logic. An inspection of the works of the texts of Sun Zi, Lazare Carnot, and Clausewitz reveals many such propositions, and …

Scaling Pedestrian Crossing Analysis To 100 U.S. Cities Via Ai-Based Segmentation Of Satellite Imagery, Marcel E. Moran, Arunav Gupta, Jiali Qian, Debra Laefer
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Accurately measuring street dimensions is essential to evaluating how their design influences both travel behavior and safety. However, gathering street-level information at city-scale with precision is difficult given the quantity and complexity of urban intersections. To address this challenge in the context of pedestrian crossings — a crucial component of walkability — we introduce a scalable and accurate method for automatically measuring crossing distance at both marked and unmarked crosswalks, applied to America’s 100 largest cities. First, OpenStreetMap coordinates were used to retrieve satellite imagery of intersections throughout each city — totaling roughly three million images. Next, Meta’s Segment Anything …

Investigating Ui Based And Ai Based Interactions In Vr Environments For Human Anatomy Education, Siddharth Sondhi
Master's Projects
Traditional approaches to learning and simulation often struggle to convey the complexity of three dimensional structures. In anatomy education, methods such as textbooks, lectures, and cadaver based learning are used, but can make it difficult to understand the complex structure of organs within the human body. Virtual Reality (VR) offers a promising alternative by providing immersive and interactive 3D environments that allow users to explore and manipulate anatomical structures more intuitively. These environments can be further enhanced by integrating large language models (LLMs) as intelligent agents capable of guiding users through natural language interaction. This project presents a Unity-based VR …
Emotional Patterns In Conversational Social Media Using Graph-Based Context, Sai Sanjay Yerunkar
Emotional Patterns In Conversational Social Media Using Graph-Based Context, Sai Sanjay Yerunkar
Master's Projects
Most social media datasets for emotion detection have not been constructed to account for conversational structure‚ so we investigate whether it carries signal for emotion prediction. Using Sentiment140 and GoEmotions Reddit threads‚ we construct their thread-based conversation graphs and compute the aggregated features of neighbors as well as the transformer and TF-IDF representations of comments. Connected comments are 4.5× more similar in emotions than expected by chance. Pairwise emotional similarity decays exponentially with geodesic distance (e.g.‚ after 2 hops). Pairs separated by a 30s timestamp difference have the highest emotional similarity. These results suggest that emotion is structured locally and …

Exploring Parents’ Perspective Of Outdoor Occupational Therapy Sessions, Harold Ho, Michelle Huynh, Christina Le, Amy Morrison
Master's Projects
Introduction: Outdoor play is recognized as critical for supporting children’s development across physical, cognitive, and social-emotional domains (Firby & Raine, 2022; Walker & Ray, 2024; Zhu et al., 2024). The current literature suggests that outdoor play strengthens executive functioning, early learning skills, and enhances social-emotional competency (Dinkel et al., 2019; Walker & Ray, 2024; Zhu et al., 2024). Furthermore, accessibility to outdoor play is shaped by contextual factors, including parental perceptions of safety, environmental barriers, and broader societal influences (Cox et al., 2025; Faulkner et al., 2025; Jelleyman et al., 2019). The research suggests that common parental concerns have emerged …

Broadening Replication Standards For Vignette Studies: Introducing Contextually Appropriate Replications, Birgit Schyns, Gretchen Vogelgesang Lester, Michelle M. Hammond
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Vignette studies present specific challenges for replications, yet vignettes are a popular choice for replication studies in leadership. In our review of eight vignette-based leadership publications, only two were able to fully replicate the original study's findings. We suggest that part of the failure to replicate the results of vignette studies may be due to a misalignment between the vignettes and social reality at the time of data collection. This paper highlights the challenges vignettes present due to societal progression and includes recommendations regarding potential methodological artifacts including the appropriateness of the sample, vignette content, and modality. We first discuss …
Ideology And Iconography In Gustav Machatý’S Ecstasy (1933), Karl E. Toepfer
Ideology And Iconography In Gustav Machatý’S Ecstasy (1933), Karl E. Toepfer
Open Educational Resources
This essay discusses the cinematic construction of sexual ecstatic experience in Gustav Machaty's 1933 film Ecstasy. Sergei Eisenstein's theory of cinematic montage governs the shapes the way the filmmakers organize the representation of erotic desire and rapture. But the film also shows affinity with the Czech "Poetist" movement of the 1920s in constructing a guiding view of ecstatic experience. The essay analyzes many images in the film, and concludes with an application of montage theory of ecstatic cinema to the consumption of erotic videos and internet imagery.

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
This article uses the Santa Clara County Reentry Resource Center (RRC) as a case study to explore the cultural content of penal reform. Specifically, we explore the discourses that officials use to publicly justify projects of penal-welfare hybridization, or the linking of state systems of punishment and welfare to manage criminalized populations. Our qualitative analysis draws on a dataset consisting of county planning documents, budgets, videos, press releases, and newsletters published online between 2011 and 2023. By examining these materials over time, we are able to chart patterns of consistency and variation in how officials justify hybridization. We find that …
