Creatine And Depression In Rodents: A Meta-Analysis, Ruchika S. Tirupachur
Creatine And Depression In Rodents: A Meta-Analysis, Ruchika S. Tirupachur
Master's Theses
Traditional treatments for major depression are based on the monoamine deficiency hypothesis, and they fail to achieve remission in a substantial portion of patients. Newer evidence suggests the pathophysiology of depression is a more complex story, highlighting a need for research in alternative therapies. Mounting evidence shows a linkage between depression and the supplement creatine monohydrate (CRMH). Research in rodent models suggests that CRMH may both alleviate depressive symptoms and enhance the efficacy of standard antidepressants like SSRIs. The following study describes findings from a combined fixed- and random-effects meta-analysis based on four empirical studies investigating the effect of CRMH …
The Moderating Role Of Meaningful Work On The Relationship Between Loss Of Self-Identity And Psychological Well-Being In Retired Collegiate Athletes, Sarah M. Kurd
Master's Theses
Collegiate athletes are a focal point for many universities. These student-athletes work most of their lives to make it to the university level. Many collegiate athletes aspire to make it to the professional level after they graduate from college, but only a rare handful make it to the top. The rest of the athlete population retires and is placed into a world of “normalcy,” but the transition out of athletics can be very challenging, impacting a person’s psychological well-being. Most of these athletes will have to work a professional job after leaving sports. The present study aimed to examine the …

This study uses a mixed-methods approach to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and happiness in administrators and managers within academic libraries and how they relate to the experiences of individual contributor employees. Emotional intelligence is often viewed by library administrators as a critical element in promoting positive workplaces, especially for those employees who have supervisory or administrative responsibilities. Happiness, while rarely considered as such, is more often seen in the inverse - concern about low morale and toxic workplaces - and is thus another critical element. Data from this study shows that administrators and managers self-report higher levels of …

Single-Caregiver Families: Using Lived Experiences To Build Effective Resilience And Protect Future Children Against Negative Outcomes, Andrew Chakalian
Master's Theses
Among many cited risk factors that disproportionately affect children who grow up in a single-caregiver family, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and related behavioral and health outcomes are some of the most significant. Comparatively, there has been a substantial gap in the research exploring protective factors that support healthy development for children with this family composition. The present study used a phenomenological methodology to explore how nine participants aged 18-25 viewed their childhood in a single-caregiver family. Through the use of semi-structured interviews, participants shared their experiences; analysis yielded four themes: (1) further dysfunction in the social system exacerbating the effects …

Many large terrestrial mammalian predators use energy-intensive, high-risk, high-gain strategies to pursue large, high-quality prey. However, similar-sized marine mammal predators with even higher field metabolic rates (FMRs) consistently target prey three to six orders of magnitude smaller than themselves. Here, we address the question of how these active and expensive marine mammal predators can gain sufficient energy from consistently targeting small prey during breath-hold dives. Using harbor porpoises as model organisms, we show that hunting small aquatic prey is energetically cheap (<20% increase in FMR) for these marine predators, but it requires them to spend a large proportion (>60%) of time foraging. We conclude that this grazing foraging strategy on small prey is viable for marine …20%>
