Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Abstract

The relevance of academic library to people outside the academic setting needs to be redefined because of restrictions and non inclusion of their information needs in collection development policy. The study therefore evaluated town-gown relationship in Ondo State Nigeria with direct cognisance to assessment of Community Information Services (CISs) by academic libraries. Complete enumeration sampling technique was adopted to distribute questionnaires to all 58 librarians working in academic libraries in the State. 52 questionnaires were returned and found useful. The response rate was therefore 89.7%. The study found that CISs were being rendered mainly to scholars who visited the …

Impact Of Cue-Based Feeding Protocol On Premature Infants' Outcomes And Hospital Length Of Stay, Diana Michele Easley Cormier May 2014

Impact Of Cue-Based Feeding Protocol On Premature Infants' Outcomes And Hospital Length Of Stay, Diana Michele Easley Cormier

Doctoral Projects

The project was an oral feeding practice change from traditional, gestational-age/volume-driven feeding progression to developmentally-based, infant-driven feeding progression. The infant-driven (cue-based) feeding protocol was implemented with goals to improve premature infants' feeding outcomes, and decreased the infant's length of hospitalization. The project was designed to implement a cue-based feeding protocol for oral feeding initiation and progression, within the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Community Regional Medical Center (CRMC), and then retrospectively evaluate the impact of the cue-based feeding protocol on feeding outcomes. In order to realize full implementation of a NICU feeding practice change, multiple components, such as electronic …

Pilot Study: Avoiding Readmissions Of Heart Failure Patients Across Transitions Of Care, Analiza Baldonado

Doctoral Projects

Background: A major problem facing the U.S. healthcare system is avoidable hospital readmissions. Patients with Heart Failure (HF) face variety of barriers to health care and are at higher risk for readmissions. To address this problem, evidence-based interventions focused on safe transition from hospital to home are needed.

Methods: A quality improvement pilot project was implemented to evaluate the feasibility of evidence based interventions in preventing avoidable readmissions. The project setting was in a 900 bed health care system. The descriptive statistical methods were means and frequencies. The Transition Coordinator (TC) enrolled a convenience sample of 30 participants. The evidence …

The Lingering Killer: Agent Orange, Sharon Ungerfeld

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

This paper explores the utilization of the chemical herbicide, Agent Orange, as it was sprayed over Vietnam during the Vietnam War in 1961 to 1971. The United States government, military, and corporations acted irresponsibly by creating the chemical and spraying it as a war tactic. The outcome of the spraying includes detrimental socioeconomic impacts, environmental degradation, and health problems. The socioeconomic impact is explained with statistics and an explanation of loss of job and education capabilities. With data on the destroyed trees and vegetation, this paper demonstrates the degree to which the environment faced harm. The health effects of Agent …

Open To Debate: Open Education And The Library, Ann Agee, Christina Mune

Faculty and Staff Publications

Universities have embraced massive open online courses (MOOCs) with startling speed. For some, this “disruptive” idea sparks excitement about a world of free and easily accessible education. Others see MOOCs as a way to further monetize education and reduce faculty on the academy’s payroll. This session encourages you to get involved in the conversation and consider other provocative questions arising from the new academic landscape created by open educational resources and free online courses. In an Oxford-style debate, session attendees get to be the debaters by voting on some of today’s most controversial issues, engaging in debate, then voting a …

Serpentine Soils, Nishanta Rajakaruna, R. S. Boyd Jan 2014

Serpentine Soils, Nishanta Rajakaruna, R. S. Boyd

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Serpentine soils are weathered products of a range of ultramafic rocks composed of ferromagnesian silicates. Serpentine more accurately refers to a group of minerals, including antigorite, chrysotile, and lizardite, in hydrothermally altered ultramafic rocks. Common ultramafic rock types include peridotites (dunite, wehrlite, harzburgite, lherzolite) and the secondary alteration products formed by their hydration within the Earth’s crust, including serpentinite, the primary source of serpentine soil. Serpentine soils are generally deficient in plant essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and sulfur; have a calcium-to-magnesium (Ca:Mg) molar ratio of less than 1; and have elevated levels of heavy metals such as …

Internet-based daily deal websites, such as Groupon® and LivingSocial®, feature deals and discounts on many products and services, including fitness programs. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between "daily deals" usage and the types of commitment exhibited by fitness program participants. The targeted program studied was a fitness boot camp. Boot camp participants (N=150), recruited from an indoor boot camp company, completed a questionnaire that included basic demographic information, membership …

The Effects Of Post-Operative Analgesics On Ovarian Surface Angiogenesis After Transplantation Of Young Ovaries Into Aged Mice, Christine Petrovec Jan 2014

The Effects Of Post-Operative Analgesics On Ovarian Surface Angiogenesis After Transplantation Of Young Ovaries Into Aged Mice, Christine Petrovec

Master's Theses

The formation of new blood vessels from pre-existing vasculature, termed angiogenesis, is essential for tissue viability and continuous organ function after murine ovary allotransplantation. Interference with the process of angiogenesis can result in cellular injury and tissue necrosis in the transplanted ovarian tissue. Although recommended, the use of analgesics for post-operative pain management has been shown to alter angiogenesis and could negatively affect transplanted ovarian tissue viability. The present study evaluated the effects of two analgesics, the opiate buprenorphine and the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug meloxicam, on superficial ovarian vessel formation after the transplantation of young ovaries into aged mice. One-Way …

Novel Bacterial Lineages In The Uncultured Candidate Division Sr1, Sumreet Kaur Ghotra Jan 2014

Novel Bacterial Lineages In The Uncultured Candidate Division Sr1, Sumreet Kaur Ghotra

Master's Theses

Complex and naturally occurring microbial communities are known to be predominantly composed of uncultured bacteria and archaea. A few representatives of uncultured prokaryotes (e.g., from the candidate divisions TM7 and SR1) have been found in environmental samples and in association with animals, including humans. It is not yet clear, however, how uncultured bacteria found at environmental sites relate phylogenetically to their counterparts associated with animal hosts. In this study, we investigated the diversity of the SR1 candidate division to better understand the divide between animal-associated and environmental lineages. We generated 16S rDNA gene clone libraries from samples obtained from the …
