City Of Santa Clara's Housing Element Approach To The Provision Of Affordable Housing, Ahmed M. Arikat
City Of Santa Clara's Housing Element Approach To The Provision Of Affordable Housing, Ahmed M. Arikat
Master's Projects
“Affordable Housing” refers to housing provided for low-income population. The generally accepted definition of affordability is for a household to pay no more than 30 percent of its annual income on housing.'’ Since the median cost of housing in California is higher than the median cost for the nation, even moderate-income households end up spending more than 30 percent of their income on housing. The lack of affordable housing is a significant hardship for these households preventing them from meeting their other basic needs, such as nutrition and healthcare, or saving for their future and that of their families. It …

The Role Of Optimal Healing Environments In The Management Of Childhood Obesity, Marjorie Freedman, Judith Stern
The Role Of Optimal Healing Environments In The Management Of Childhood Obesity, Marjorie Freedman, Judith Stern
Faculty Publications
The prevalence of childhood and adolescent obesity has increased steadily over the past three decades such that obesity is now a major worldwide pediatric health risk factor. Pediatric obesity is associated with significant health problems, and is an important early risk factor for adult morbidity and mortality. This paper focuses on the role and components of optimal healing environments (OHEs) that may be useful in the management of childhood obesity: healing intention, healing relationships, health promotion and disease prevention, and healing spaces. Diet, physical activity, and behavior modification strategies used in the treatment of childhood obesity are also reviewed.

The Prevalence Of Dental Caries In A Central Coast Of California Middle School, Belen R. Mojica
The Prevalence Of Dental Caries In A Central Coast Of California Middle School, Belen R. Mojica
Master's Projects
Dental morbidity is a chronic problem that affects a child's ability to attend school, to learn, and to enjoy good health. Of all childhood diseases, oral disease ranks as one of the highest and is considered one of the most common and the least treated. The prevalence of dental caries is high among children and adolescents in school populations. This study explored the prevalence of dental caries in a California Central Coast middle school during the 2002-03 school year (N=526). Findings indicated that severe dental caries existed in both boys and girls and in students of various ethnic groups. Approximately …

Knowledge Of Type Ii Diabetes And Its Complications Among Adult Vietnamese Immigrants, Thao Phuong Le
Knowledge Of Type Ii Diabetes And Its Complications Among Adult Vietnamese Immigrants, Thao Phuong Le
Master's Projects
This was a non-experimental quantitative study using survey method to assess diabetic knowledge of 102 adult Vietnamese immigrants. The Health Belief Model provided the theoretical framework, and the 24-item diabetes knowledge questionnaire was adopted from the Starr County Texas study to use for this study. Data were categorized and analyzed using descriptive methods such as frequency and percentage. The findings indicated that lack of knowledge about diabetes was a significant issue among the Vietnamese immigrant population. Health care providers should develop an appropriate cultural educational program about diabetes to help the Vietnamese population to detect diabetes early and to control …

Quality Of Life After Heart Transplantation, Jacqueline Trammell
Quality Of Life After Heart Transplantation, Jacqueline Trammell
Master's Projects
Background: Cardiac transplantation has been a treatment option for patients with end stage heart failure for the past 35 years. As evaluation and treatment protocols emerge and evolve it is the responsibility of the healthcare provider to assist the recipient in attaining the best quality of life (QOL) possible. Method: A demographic survey, along with the SF-36v2 generic survey, which measures quality of life in physical and functioning domains, was mailed to 100 heart transplant recipients in a large health plan in Northern California. The data from sixty five surveys were analyzed for any relationships between time from transplantation, employment …

Methanogenic Archaea And Human Periodontal Disease, Paul W. Lepp, Mary M. Brinig, Cleber C. Ouverney, Katherine Palm, Gary C. Armitage, David A. Relman
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
Archaea have been isolated from the human colon, vagina, and oral cavity, but have not been established as causes of human disease. In this study, we reveal a relationship between the severity of periodontal disease and the relative abundance of archaeal small subunit ribosomal RNA genes (SSU rDNA) in the subgingival crevice by using quantitative PCR. Furthermore, the relative abundance of archaeal small subunit rDNA decreased at treated sites in association with clinical improvement. Archaea were harbored by 36% of periodontitis patients and were restricted to subgingival sites with periodontal disease. The presence of archaeal cells at these sites was …
