The Relationship Between Gender, Platonic Physical Affection, And Interpersonal Sensitivity, Mariam Malik
The Relationship Between Gender, Platonic Physical Affection, And Interpersonal Sensitivity, Mariam Malik
McNair Research Journal SJSU
Interpersonal sensitivity (IS), also known as emotional maturity or empathy,
is characterized by recognizing emotions and displaying empathy, which
are important social skills. Understanding the factors that are associated
with interpersonal sensitivity can provide the foundation for research
revolving around improving interpersonal sensitivity, and in turn,
improving social skills. Platonic physical affection (PPA), such as holding
hands and hugging, is a social variable often associated with those close to
one another (e.g., friends and family). However, the exhibition and
receptivity to this social variable may differ across cultures and genders.
This study aimed to see if there is a relationship …

Enhancing Sustainability And Durability In Asphalt Pavements: Evaluating The Impact Of Low-Carbon Sulfur Polymer Modifiers And Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement, Mohammad Doroudgar, Shadi Saadeh, Elham Fini
Mineta Transportation Institute
The asphalt industry faces major challenges, including the need for pavements that last longer and are more sustainable, as traditional asphalt production is costly and has a high environmental impact. To address this, researchers have been exploring modified asphalt binders such as rubber, charcoal, and waste cooking oil, which have shown promise in extending the lifespan, resistance to deformation, and durability of asphalt pavements. In addition, governments and industries are investing in the use of recycled and “green” materials to reduce the carbon footprint and environmental degradation of conventional asphalt mixtures. Building on this momentum, this study investigates the performance …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract
Electronic resources are now essential for teaching, learning, research and dissemination of knowledge in higher institutions of learning. Although many universities have invested heavily in digital collections, databases, electronic journals, electronic books, institutional repositories, and online reference services, the use of these resources is not as high as expected in many universities, especially in developing countries. Low awareness, lack of information literacy skills, limited technological infrastructure, poor internet connectivity, lack of training, and weak institutional support continue to impede the effective use of electronic resources. This is a review paper that explores the current state of electronic resource utilization …

The Caspian Sea, the Earth's largest inland water body, faces water level decline, drawing comparisons to the collapse of the Aral Sea. Unlike the Aral Sea, the relative roles of climatic variability, hydrological changes, and anthropogenic pressures on the Caspian Sea remain poorly understood. Here, we integrate satellite observations, in situ hydrological records and reanalysis data to examine recent drivers of the Caspian water loss. We show that total river inflow to the Caspian Sea has declined significantly, primarily due to reduced discharge from the Volga River. At the same time, precipitation over the basin has remained broadly stable, while …

Revisiting Representation Learning For Natural Language Processing From The Fundamentals For Misinformation Detection, Vishnu S. Pendyala
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
While existing language embeddings achieve high accuracy on benchmark tasks, recent studies suggest they often struggle to distinguish true from false statements. This work argues that new representation learning and aggregation strategies are needed, especially those that adapt to misinformation's evolving patterns and incorporate explainability. As a first step, we explore two directions: (1) aggregation strategies inspired by signal processing, where word embeddings are transformed into spectrogram-like representations for classification to overcome context window limitations, and (2) future extensions using dynamic neural architectures such as Neural ODEs, Liquid Time-Constant Networks (LTCs), Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks (KANs), and Legendre Memory Units (LMUs). Preliminary …

Low Inducer Concentrations At 10 °C Promotes Soluble Recombinant Expression Of Aedes Aegypti Mosquito Midgut Proteases In E. Coli, Daniel Fong, Neomi Millan, My Anh Le, Elizabeth Moreno-Galvez, Kevin Derisier, Abigail G. Ramirez, Kaelyn Pluta, Kimberly Houghton, Alberto A. Rascón
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Background: Soluble recombinant expression of Aedes aegypti mosquito midgut proteases in Escherichia coli prove to be difficult. These enzymes depend on disulfide bond formation for structural stability. Initial attempts in BL21(DE3) were unsuccessful due to a reducing cytoplasm. The use of T7 SHuffle cells (with a more oxidizing cytoplasm) led to soluble expression. However, other factors had to be altered (use of richer media and lower (< 25 °C) growth temperature). Not all mosquito proteases were equally soluble. Therefore, given the importance of IPTG in initiating transcription and translation, we set out to determine if low IPTG concentrations (< 0.1 mM) at 10 °C would increase soluble production of midgut proteases. Additionally, we investigated the effect of the small molecule osmolyte betaine on the soluble expression of midgut proteases. Results: For this study, the focus was on Aedes aegypti Late Trypsin (AaLT), Early Trypsin (AaET), Serine Protease I (AaSPI), Serine protease V (AaSPV), and Juvenile Hormone Associated 15 (JHA15). The colder bacterial growth, along with low IPTG, slows the rate of transcription/translation of T7 RNA polymerase. Lower expression of T7 RNA polymerase, along with slower transcription activity at 10 °C, prevents rapid simultaneous translation of midgut proteases thereby promoting soluble expression. In addition, we found that different growth periods also varied among the proteases. Soluble expression for AaLT and AaET was maximal at 52 h post-induction, 72 h for JHA15, and 168 h for AaSPI and AaSPV. Surprisingly, for AaET, temperature was the only important factor. The addition of betaine to the growths had a more pronounced effect at higher (> 0.05 mM) IPTG. Conclusions: Low IPTG at 10 °C slows the rate of transcription/translation of recombinantly expressed mosquito proteases in bacteria. By preventing rapid accumulation in the cell, prevents aggregation, and ultimately inclusion …
