The Ideological Work Of Penal Reform: How Reformers Justify Penal-Welfare Hybridization, John Halushka, Brandon Miller Jan 2026

The Ideological Work Of Penal Reform: How Reformers Justify Penal-Welfare Hybridization, John Halushka, Brandon Miller

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This article uses the Santa Clara County Reentry Resource Center (RRC) as a case study to explore the cultural content of penal reform. Specifically, we explore the discourses that officials use to publicly justify projects of penal-welfare hybridization, or the linking of state systems of punishment and welfare to manage criminalized populations. Our qualitative analysis draws on a dataset consisting of county planning documents, budgets, videos, press releases, and newsletters published online between 2011 and 2023. By examining these materials over time, we are able to chart patterns of consistency and variation in how officials justify hybridization. We find that …

Study Of Access Region Sheet Resistance In Superlattice U-Gan Hemt And Its Compact Modeling, Vikram Magendar, Hiu Yung Wong Jan 2026

Study Of Access Region Sheet Resistance In Superlattice U-Gan Hemt And Its Compact Modeling, Vikram Magendar, Hiu Yung Wong

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Superlattice GaN structures are expected to have reduced on-state resistance due to the formation of multiple twodimensional electron gas (2DEG) channels in the access regions. The U-GaN structure, which has one channel in the gate region for normally-off operation, employs regrown Si-doped vertical GaN sidewalls to electrically connect multiple channels in the access regions. In this paper, an access region with thin superlattice layers, which is expected to have less relaxation and dislocations than the thicker one, is studied. Technology Computer-Aided Design (TCAD) simulations confirm the formation of multiple polarization-induced 2DEG channels. It is found that the equivalent access-region sheet …

Multi-Resolution Feature Stem For Diabetic Retinopathy Lesion Segmentation, Indranil Dutta, Taehee Jeong

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide, requiring automated lesion segmentation using deep learning models for early detection and monitoring. However, DR lesions vary dramatically in size from tiny microaneurysms to large hemorrhages and exudates. This variability creates conflicting demands on the model architecture and input resolution, posing a challenge for effective design. This work investigates the impact of input resolution on different lesion types. Through systematic experimentation with multiple architectures (U-Net, UNet++, Vision Transformers, DeepLabV3+) at 512 × 512 and 1024 × 1024 resolutions, we identify a critical, counter-intuitive phenomenon where increasing input resolution has …

Re-Evaluating Virtual Reality Manipulation Techniques For Precise Alignment Of Complex 3d Objects, Cherelle Connor, Alexander Giovannelli, Leonardo Pavanatto, Francielly Rodrigues, Haichao Miao, Vuthea Chheang, Brian Giera, Peer Timo Bremer, Doug A. Bowman

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Prior research has developed a number of manipulation techniques that can achieve precise object placement in virtual reality, but studies of these techniques typically use simple objects. We conducted a study comparing two existing techniques, (AMP-IT and WISDOM), during alignment of objects with complex geometry to evaluate the potential influence of geometric complexity on performance, usability, workload and preference. Our findings indicate that participants had faster completion times and higher trial completion rates with AMP-IT on high-precision alignment tasks, contrary to earlier findings that used simple objects. Yet WISDOM is still preferred and considered more usable, despite increased workload and …

Pattern-Aware Graph Neural Networks For Handling Missing Data, Minett Tran, Taehee Jeong Jan 2026

Pattern-Aware Graph Neural Networks For Handling Missing Data, Minett Tran, Taehee Jeong

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Missing data is ubiquitous in real-world datasets. Traditional methods either discard incomplete samples or apply imputation techniques that ignore potentially informative missingness patterns, implicitly assuming that missingness occurs randomly. However, missingness patterns might provide additional information. We propose pattern-aware graph neural networks that explicitly encode which features are missing alongside observed values. We used four encoding strategies-learned embeddings, frozen random embeddings, statistical features, and hierarchical representations-across seven UCI datasets with naturally occurring missingness. Our Pattern-aware methods achieve substantial improvements over baselines, with an average improvement of 17% in balanced accuracy and 22% in F1-macro across all datasets. Our code and …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Cryogenic devices at 4.2K are indispensable in the control electronics for large-scale quantum computers. Due to its small manufacturing volume, a standard commercial foundry process is likely to be used in the near and medium terms. Moreover, 77K electronics are promising for high-speed server applications. Besides digital circuits, analog circuits with non-minimal channel length are particularly important in quantum computing control. In this paper, special structures are designed to characterize the device properties of medium- and long-channel length devices at 292K, 77K, and 4.2K in a commercial 14nm FinFET process. About 100 structures were measured for both NMOS and PMOS. …

I Can’T Believe It’S Not Social: Investigating The Relationship Between Loneliness, Parasocial Relationships, And Potential Moderators, Hannah I. Suozzi

Master's Theses

Increased loneliness trends coincide with increased media use. Media is turned to as a source of comfort and distraction from the real world. There is cause to believe that people also use media as a way to form parasocial relationships (PSRs), one-sided relationships audiences form with media figures (i.e., celebrities, influencers, and fictional characters). The connection between loneliness and PSR is thought to be moderated by social vulnerability, particularly the need to belong (NTB) and ethnicity. The medium from which PSRs originate lacks empirical study. To address the limitations, this study analyzed data collected from San Jose State University students …

The work reports a microfluidic approach that includes 2D reactive porous media and advanced pore flow diagnostics for the study of pore-scale dissolution in porous media with unprecedented details. The 2D microfluidic porous media, called micromodels, were fabricated in calcite by combining photolithography and wet etching, which not only offers precise control over the structural and chemical properties, …

Retrieval Augmented Framework For Deepfake Audio Detection, Avinash Saxena Nov 2025

Retrieval Augmented Framework For Deepfake Audio Detection, Avinash Saxena

Master's Theses

The widespread use of AI-based audio deepfakes threatens severely to undermine media integrity and public trust. Speech synthesis techniques have improved dramatically in voice conversion (VC) and text-to-speech (TTS) in recent years, making forgeries sound highly realistic, and concerns are raised about possible malevolent uses. Existing state-of-the-art techniques for identifying fake speech have proven to be effective in some cases but are still limited in application and robustness when faced with novel attacking strategies, different acoustic conditions, or alternative linguistic domains. To address some of these limitations, the current research presents a novel deepfake audio detection system based on personalized …
