Sending And Receiving Internet Messages From Disconnected Areas, Abhishek Prakash Gaikwad
Master's Projects
Over 62% of the world is connected to the internet with more than 6.9 billion smartphone users. The omnipresence of technology in the form of the internet and smartphones have led to constant research in improving communication throughout the world. But even today, 37% (2.9 billion people) are not connected to the internet even though most of the people in such areas have smartphones. To solve this problem of access to internet services in disconnected areas, a software-only mobile-first approach has been proposed for disconnected data distribution infrastructure which can support different internet applications in limited connectivity. A prototype application …
Job Tailored Resume Content Generation, Sumedh Kale
Job Tailored Resume Content Generation, Sumedh Kale
Master's Projects
Generally candidates apply to multiple jobs with a single resume and do not tend to customize their resume to match the job description. This hampers their chances of getting a resume shortlisted for the job. The project aims to help such candidates build job tailored resumes that help them create a customized and targeted resume for a specific job or industry. The tool specifically targets candidates’ employment history, for resume content generation. We then use natural language processing
(NLP) techniques to extract and organize this data into a structured format for the dataset. We experiment with multiple variations of the …

Notably, this shift was influenced by the ethnicity of the characters involved. Interestingly, the eye-tracking data unveiled distinct patterns of cognitive load, characterized by slower response times and greater …
Unlearning Hidden Bias Between Refugees : An Initial Empirical Investigation, Akshay Sunil Gurnaney
Unlearning Hidden Bias Between Refugees : An Initial Empirical Investigation, Akshay Sunil Gurnaney
Master's Projects
The challenges that refugees in various regions encounter are common knowledge. One such challenge is a bias among refugees on ethnocentric grounds. In particular, there are various articles that have pointed out the struggles faced by Syrian refugees in countries like Europe as a result of implicit bias. In fact, the media coverage of Syrian crises and the government responses to the same shed negative light on the refugees themselves. On the contrary, the media coverage of Ukrainian crises is very different with lesser restrictions from the governments.
This research attempts to identify the extent of implicit bias between Ukrainian …

Interest-Based Recommendation System Using Gmail Topic Modelling, Pranav Ghaskadbi
Master's Projects
Emails are a fundamental part of modern communication. Much of communicative discourse in modern society occurs over email, resulting in personal collections for each mail user which are rich in latent user’s interests. Conventional recommendation systems require historical data of user activity and interactions to derive user interests. The absence of activity and interaction data poses an interesting challenge for generating relevant recommendations for users. We were motivated to investigate approaches to identify user interests in the absence of historical data to generate personalized content recommendations. There is opportunity to derive user interests from email data, which can be used …

Master's Projects
In the population of adult human patients who over express Beta and Tau Amyloids, it is unclear why 40% of them do not have Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), when all patients with AD have an overexpression of Beta and Tau Amyloids. The MCI-AD-DTI project’s epigenetic pipeline is an evolving computation tool that seeks epigenetic-related information related to the observed disparity. The MCI-AD-DTI’s epigenetic pipeline’s ability to identify mutations currently relies solely on PyPDB for verification of its protein functionality evaluation. The assessment process of the industry standard application, Modeller10.4, is independent from the current epigenetic pipeline’s protein evaluation algorithm. Thus, this …

“It Feels Like A Cultural Shift": Parent School Selection And Experiences With School Choice At Title I Schools, Christina Lee Ballantyne
“It Feels Like A Cultural Shift": Parent School Selection And Experiences With School Choice At Title I Schools, Christina Lee Ballantyne
Dissertations
A neoliberal agenda to institute educational reform via school choice has created a school marketplace where parents and schools are connected in a supply-and-demand relationship. Rather than attend the neighborhood school, some parents can seek alternative school options for their children. Although purported to improve educational outcomes and desegregate schools, school choice has not demonstrated increased student academic achievement nor integrated school spaces. Instead, the school choice movement has been seen to contribute to and perpetuate racial and economic segregation. This study sought to understand the perspectives of parents who have selected their neighborhood Title I school and how they …

“The Issue Is Already There; Just Have The Conversation!”: Culturally Sustaining Reflection In The Student Teaching Triad, Hanna M. Asrat
Dissertations
There is a vast demographic mismatch between California’s public school teachers (who are majority White, mono-lingual English-speaking women) and California’s public school students. Though universities responsible for educating preservice teachers often include coursework that attempts to help address this demographic mismatch, such as instruction about Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, if preservice teachers do not get the chance to practice this pedagogy in their fieldwork placement, they tend to fall into to the two-worlds problem. The two-worlds problem posits that preservice teachers view constructivist and Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies learned at the university as theoretical and incompatible with actual teaching, and so they …

A Novel Efficient Deep Learning Framework For Facial Inpainting - Face Reconstruction From Masked Images, Akshay Ravi
Master's Projects
The use of face masks due to the covid-19 pandemic has made surveillance of people very difficult. Since a mask covers most of the facial components, security cameras are rendered of little to no use in the identification of criminals. In order to realize what a face looks like behind a mask, we have to construct the facial features in the masked region. On a higher level, this falls under the field of image inpainting, i.e. filling missing regions of images or correcting irregularities in images. Current research on image inpainting shows promising results on images that have missing/incorrect patches …

Educators’ differential selection of Black and Latine students for office discipline referrals is a significant driver of inequity in exclusionary outcomes. Using demographic data and discipline records for all students in one large urban school district, we use descriptive statistics and multilevel regression models to consider whether referral reasons are racialized and if these patterns intersect with gender. Our analyses indicate that educators are consistently more likely to refer Black students than White students to the office for several subjective reasons, including habitual disruption, that are purportedly race-neutral but privilege Whiteness. They are less likely to make referrals for Black …
