Electrostatic Clamping Of The Substrate (Wafer) In Plasma Aided Semiconductor Processing, Rajinder Dhindsa May 1996

Electrostatic Clamping Of The Substrate (Wafer) In Plasma Aided Semiconductor Processing, Rajinder Dhindsa

Master's Projects

Plasma aided processing of the semiconductor wafer has evolved as the state of the art technology for the fabrication of VLSI and ULSI circuits. However, during these plasma aided processes the substrate temperature tends to increase due to high energy ion bombardment. The temperature control of the substrate (wafer) during the process and the particulate control inside the process chamber have become the main challenges for the next generation of 0.25 pm and below fabrication technology. New techniques are being developed to control the wafer temperature and keep the process chamber free from any source contributes to particle generation. One …

SWITCH

In this article, Rudy Rucker shares his thoughts on hacking. He summarizes it as normal actions, such as building a car, or kneading clay. He compares hacking to things that are buildable by hand, and views creating computer programs the same way. One of the benefits of creating your own computer programs is that you can customize themn however you want. However customizing software on your own is extremely time consuming. He then goes into further detail about artificial life and how hyperspace works. Hacking bends the cyber reality that we are accustomed to, and modifying programs outside of what …

SWITCH

In this article the Switch staff goes in to detail on the redesign of the journal's website for an issue on on artificial life . The new design xperiments with the way Switch looks and how a user can navigate throughout the articles. Lorretta Lange is introduced as the new editor. The authors answer questions about the differences between artificial life and artificial intelligence, highlighting how artificial life can consist of small modulating algorithms. For more on this topic, the article links to Rudy Rucker's related article.

Societal Cost Methodology, Neelam Ghuliani May 1996

Societal Cost Methodology, Neelam Ghuliani

Master's Projects

Life Cycle Analysis is a process employed in the evolution of systems from the time of need identification to the time of deployment of the system for use. This thesis project developed a societal cost approach to life cycle analysis, including the new design approach, and cost models. Societal Cost Methodology is a total life cycle analysis and costing that includes not only the acquisition and ownership cost but also the environmental, ecological, disposal, and societal costs. This methodology emphasizes that environmental and societal impacts should be considered in the early design stage so that product or system can be …

Gnarled Defined, Rudy Rucker May 1996

Gnarled Defined, Rudy Rucker

SWITCH

The article is a reflection of the author’s conception of the term ‘gnarly’, extending the term’s meaning from its origins in California surfer slang. 'Gnarly' is often used in a colloquial context, however, the author believes that the term is able to be used in an academic field as it pertains to outcomes and results of equations. Discussions towards the application of the term 'gnarly' showcase how it can be used in a scientific, mathematical, and artistic context through seemingly random patterns. In order to be gnarly, things must lie and exist between the realm of orderly and chaotic often …

12 Monkeys, Collette Sweeney May 1996

12 Monkeys, Collette Sweeney

SWITCH

The article depicts the visual and conceptual significance of the film “12 Monkeys”, directed by Terry Gilliam and starring Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt. In this film, movie genres and tropes are called into question. Terry Gilliam presents a visions of the future, but relies on the conventions of the American Western Formula. Gilliam tales a distinct approach to typical characters, allowing his proragonists to become onlookers to the foreboding issue at play. What Gilliam achieves in his 12 Monkeys is making the viewers “entertain” that the future depicted in the movie may be seen as a warning.
