Suite Generator, Jyoti Gavali Mar 1997

Suite Generator, Jyoti Gavali

Master's Projects

The project “Suite Generator will automate the existing manual suite generation process at Cisco Systems, Inc. A suite file is a set of test cases which serves as an input to the existing Automated Test System (ATS). The manual process of suite generation is time consuming, tedious, and susceptible to typographical, logical, and hardware related errors. The proposed system aims to improve test efficiency, flexibility, and save money in addition to correcting the drawbacks of the manual system. Each design stage focuses on eliminating errors in the current suite generation process. A Tcl/Tk based Graphical User Interface eliminates typographical errors …

Conjuring Post-Worthlessness: Contemporary Web Art And The Postmodern Context: Part 1, Brett Stalbaum Jan 1997

Conjuring Post-Worthlessness: Contemporary Web Art And The Postmodern Context: Part 1, Brett Stalbaum

SWITCH

This article is part one of two of an analysis of the Jean Baudrillard's essay, "A Conjuration of Imbeciles". This essay compares the idea of art as a metaphor for French politics and the “uselessness” of contemporary art. A sense of postmodernism is drawn from that comparison and relates to contemporary art shared on the World Wide Web. Inevitable messages and meaning found in art will change, but economics and distribution continues to ground the economy on a global scale. Therefore, contemporary art represented on the web actively dates the practice of art, and the value of the practice is …

Conjuring Post-Worthlessness: Contemporary Web Art And The Postmodern Context: Part 2, Brett Stalbaum

SWITCH

In this short essay, the author compares postmodern philosophical concepts from Michel Foucault and Jean Baudrillard to theories of Web-based Art. The author discusses modern strategies for design and new aesthetics that re-emerged on the web. The author acknowledges that Baudrillard and Foucault overemphasize art's value as measured by the interplay of technologies of the self and production systems. He also points out that it would be as flawed a strategy to dismiss the postmodern critiques of art, as doing so runs the risk of complete cynicism and dismissal of art’s value. The relationships between what the author describes as …

Ontological Problems With Web Art, Jan Ekenberg Jan 1997

Ontological Problems With Web Art, Jan Ekenberg

SWITCH

Jan Ekenberg shares how the idea of categorizing, analyzing, and ultimately searching for web art has been very difficult compared to the same process within traditional artworks. These problems are derived from the fact that web-based artworks are from a new medium to which we are not completely able to describe yet. To add to this issue, we see how online works are ever expanding and evolving which makes it near impossible to definitively organize them.

Multilevel Block Coded Modulation With Unequal Error Protection, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Marc P. C. Fossorier, Shu Lin, Hideki Imai

Faculty Publications

Multilevel block coded modulation (BCM) schemes with unequal error protection (UEP) are investigated. These schemes are based on unconventional set partitions that greatly reduce the error coefficients associated with multi-stage decoding of conventional BCM, at the expense of smaller intra-set distances.

Concatenated Multilevel Coded Modulation Schemes For Digital Satellite Broadcasting, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Hideki Imai

Faculty Publications

The error performance of bandwith-efficient concatenated multilevel coded modulation (MCM) schemes for digital satellite broadcasting is analyzed. Nonstandard partitioning, multistage decoding, and outer Reed-Solomon (RS) codes are employed to provided unequal error protection capabilities.

Automation Of The Order Processing Of A Software Contract Manufacturing Facility, Jon M. Shapiro Jan 1997

Automation Of The Order Processing Of A Software Contract Manufacturing Facility, Jon M. Shapiro

Master's Projects

This project describes the process of implementing an automated order processing system for a small manufacturing company which started out with no standard business processes. In deciding the required features and the design path for the system, special emphasis is placed on the following topics:

  • Understanding why it is crucial for a small manufacturer to pay particular attention to improving its information flow.
  • Understanding the nature of the business, the company’s relations with customers and vendors, and its products.
  • Prototyping the eventual automated system using a “paper trail” approach.
  • Why choosing to develop the system with in house talents in …
