On Block-Coded Modulation Using Unequal Error Protection Codes Over Rayleigh-Fading Channels, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Tadao Kasami, Shu Lin, Hideki Imai Jan 1998

On Block-Coded Modulation Using Unequal Error Protection Codes Over Rayleigh-Fading Channels, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Tadao Kasami, Shu Lin, Hideki Imai

Faculty Publications

This paper considers block-coded 8-phase-shift-keying (PSK) modulations for the unequal error protection (UEP) of information transmitted over Rayleigh-fading channels. Both conventional linear block codes and linear UEP (LUEP) codes are combined with a naturally labeled 8-PSK signal set, using the multilevel construction of Imai and Hirakawa (1977). Computer simulation results are presented showing that, over Rayleigh-fading channels, it is possible to improve the coding gain for the most significant bits with the use of binary LUEP codes as constituent codes, in comparison with using conventional binary linear codes alone.

Phiber Optik And The Masters Of Deception, Loretta L. Lange Jan 1998

Phiber Optik And The Masters Of Deception, Loretta L. Lange

SWITCH

An exploration of Nam June Paik’s work entitled, 'Phiber Optik', one of thirty artworks in his installation Cybertown at the San Jose Museum of Art (Spring 1996). Paik employs the name, 'Phiber Optik', as an homage to the famous hacker Mark Abene, aka Phiber Optik. The article compares Abene, who spent most of his time in the “dark side” of digital information, to Nicholas Negroponte’s optimistic prediction of emancipatory powers of digitization in his book Being Digital. It elucidates the evolution of hackers and how their work became considered an artform as forerunners of an art movement the author refers …

Cyberthuggee And The Ridiculous World Order, Gary Singh Jan 1998

Cyberthuggee And The Ridiculous World Order, Gary Singh

SWITCH

As powers around the world become more authoritarian, Singh suggests the power of the internet and web art as a tool to ridicule these social structures. Throughout history, commentary and ridicule through anonymity have been useful in challenging the political goliaths as seen in the dissertation “Thugs, Dacoits, and the Modern World-System of the Nineteenth Century” by Iftikhar Ahmad (1992). In the article, Singh compares military strategies of decentralization to the abilities of the common man via the internet. Both of these techniques weaken the targets through disruption and chaos.

Protecting Surface Transportation Systems And Patrons From Terrorist Activities, Research Report 94-04, Brian M. Jenkins

Mineta Transportation Institute

Contemporary terrorists have made public transportation a new theater of operations. Algerian extremists set off bombs on the subways of Paris in 1995 and 1996; the Irish Republican Army has waged a long running terrorist campaign against Britain’s passenger trains and London’s subways; Palestinian terrorists have carried out suicide bombings on Israel’s buses; and an individualor a group calling itself “Sons of the Gestapo” derailed a passenger train in Arizona in 1995. Islamic extremists planned to set off car bombs in New York’s tunnels and bridges in 1993 and in 1997 they plotted suicide bombings in New York subways. The …
