Resistance Distance In Connected Balanced Digraphs, R. Balakrishnan, S. Krishnamoorthy, Wasin So Oct 2023

Resistance Distance In Connected Balanced Digraphs, R. Balakrishnan, S. Krishnamoorthy, Wasin So

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Let D be a connected balanced digraph. The classical distance dijD from vertex i to vertex j is the length of a shortest directed path from i to j in D. Let L be the Laplacian matrix of D and L†=(lij†) be the Moore–Penrose inverse of L. The resistance distance rijD from i to j is then defined by rijD≔lii†+ljj†−2lij†. Let C be a collection of connected and balanced digraphs, each member of which is a finite union of the form D1∪D2∪....∪Dk where each Dt is a connected and balanced digraph with Dt∩(D1∪D2∪⋯∪Dt−1) being a single vertex, for all 1 < t ≤ k. In this paper, we show that for any digraph D in C, rijD ≤ dijD(∗) for all i,j. This is established by partitioning the Laplacian matrix of D suitably. This generalizes the main result in Balaji et al. (2020), namely, the inequality (*) holds for any directed cactus D. Related studies have been made by many authors. For instance, in Gurvich (2022) and Gurvich and Vyalyi (2012), Vladimir Gurvich applied the results on connected balanced digraphs to semi-conductors in electrical networks. In Young et al. (2016) [12,13], the authors study ‘effective resistance distance’ in graphs and digraphs while in Chebotarev (2011), graph geodetic distance is studied.

Surface Coverage Dynamics For Reversible Dissociative Adsorption On Finite Linear Lattices, Enrique Mercado, Hyun Tae Jung, Changho Kim, Alejandro L. Garcia, Andy J. Nonaka, John B. Bell

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Dissociative adsorption onto a surface introduces dynamic correlations between neighboring sites not found in non-dissociative absorption. We study surface coverage dynamics where reversible dissociative adsorption of dimers occurs on a finite linear lattice. We derive analytic expressions for the equilibrium surface coverage as a function of the number of reactive sites, N, and the ratio of the adsorption and desorption rates. Using these results, we characterize the finite size effect on the equilibrium surface coverage. For comparable N’s, the finite size effect is significantly larger when N is even than when N is odd. Moreover, as N increases, the size …

Despite recent advances in both coupled fire modeling and measurement techniques to sample the fire environment, the fire–atmosphere coupling mechanisms that lead to fast propagating wildfires remain poorly understood. This knowledge gap adversely affects fire management when wildland fires propagate unexpectedly rapidly and shift direction due to the fire impacts on local wind conditions. In this work, we utilized observational data from the FireFlux2 prescribed burn and numerical simulations performed with a coupled fire–atmosphere model WRF-SFIRE to assess the small-scale impacts of fire on local micrometeorology under moderate wind conditions (10–12 m/s). The FireFlux2 prescribed burn provided a comprehensive observational …

Daunting Encounters: La Hague’S Infrastructures Of Secrecy, Agnes Villette

Secrecy and Society

The article explores secrecy, more particularly, nuclear secrecy in relation to two nuclear facilities situated at the tip of the Norman peninsula of La Hague, in France. Both sites - the CSM nuclear waste repository and the close-by refueling plant - were developed at the end of the 1960s in connection with France’s extensive civil and military nuclear program. While institutional archives and access to the sites remain tedious, the article contends that the nuclear secrecy shielding the facilities can be approached by unpacking the numerous accidents that took place at the site. Silenced and subjected to amnesia, spills and …

Entangled Photon Anti-Correlations Are Evident From Classical Electromagnetism, Ken Wharton, Emily Adlam Aug 2023

Entangled Photon Anti-Correlations Are Evident From Classical Electromagnetism, Ken Wharton, Emily Adlam

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

For any experiment with two entangled photons, some joint measurement outcomes can have zero probability for a precise choice of basis. These perfect anti-correlations would seem to be a purely quantum phenomenon. It is, therefore, surprising that these very anti-correlations are also evident when the input to the same experiment is analyzed via classical electromagnetic theory. Demonstrating this quantum–classical connection for arbitrary two-photon states and analyzing why it is successful motivates alternative perspectives concerning entanglement, the path integral, and other topics in quantum foundations.

Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) properties give vital information about pollution signatures in rivers, and they help develop best management practices (BMPs) for effective water resource management. This work employs multivariate statistical methods, receptor modeling, connectivity analysis, and univariate trend analysis to investigate pollution sources across spatiotemporal scales in the Manawatu River, New Zealand. A positive matrix factorization (PMF) method was applied to interpret possible contamination sources. A 25-year dataset (1989–2014) comprising 12 water quality variables from three sites was used. Runoff connectivity analyses identified high-producing grassland (HG) as the most dominant pollution class in all sub-catchments. Univariate analyses …

An Empirical Analysis Of The Shift And Scale Parameters In Batchnorm, Yashna Peerthum, Mark Stamp

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Batch Normalization (BatchNorm) is a technique that improves the training of deep neural networks, especially Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). It has been empirically demonstrated that BatchNorm increases performance, stability, and accuracy, although the reasons for such improvements are unclear. BatchNorm includes a normalization step as well as trainable shift and scale parameters. In this paper, we empirically examine the relative contribution to the success of BatchNorm of the normalization step, as compared to the re-parameterization via shifting and scaling. To conduct our experiments, we implement two new optimizers in PyTorch, namely, a version of BatchNorm that we refer to as …
