Linear Programming With Inequality Constraints Via Entropic Perturbation, Jacob Tsao, Shu-Cherng Fang
Linear Programming With Inequality Constraints Via Entropic Perturbation, Jacob Tsao, Shu-Cherng Fang
Faculty Publications
A dual convex programming approach to solving linear programs with inequality constraints through entropic perturbation is derived. The amount of perturbation required depends on the desired accuracy of the optimum. The dual program contains only non-positivity constraints. An ϵ-optimal solution to the linear program can be obtained effortlessly from the optimal solution of the dual program. Since cross-entropy minimization subject to linear inequality constraints is a special case of the perturbed linear program, the duality result becomes readily applicable. Many standard constrained optimization techniques can be specialized to solve the dual program. Such specializations, made possible by the simplicity of …

Dynamic electron spin resonance, ESR measurements suggest that this paramagnetic, layered organic metal behaves similarly to cuprate superconductors. There is a dynamic equilibrium between doublet, D and triplet, T* states near the transition temperature to superconductivity Tc= 10±3 K; antiferromagnetic, AF resonance is observed from room temperature to ≈ 150 K, in this temperature region the temperature dependence of the D Lorentzian ESR line widths obtains a first order rate constant for the disappearance of the state (k1 = 3.5 ×107 e−111/T/s) and T* ESR is not observed, it is detected only below 44 K when the lifetime of AF …

A Helical Spring Selector, Manuela Deleanu
A Helical Spring Selector, Manuela Deleanu
Master's Projects
This study addresses the topic of how to choose a helical spring from a catalog. The program is written in C and can easily be ported to any system that has a C compiler. The input is provided by the user using the keyboard and from the catalog. The output of the program consists of design parameters and a spring or a range of springs or no spring found.
After the design is complete, the program searches for the best match from a catalog. The benefits of the helical spring selector program are:
The designer or engineer is allowed to …
Real Estate Appraisal Considerations For Urban Planners, Mary Kay Redmond
Real Estate Appraisal Considerations For Urban Planners, Mary Kay Redmond
Master's Projects
This report examines the critical intersection of urban planning and real estate economics, focusing on how external environmental factors and changing market conditions impact residential property values. As planners increasingly navigate community resistance to Locally Unwanted Land Uses (LULUs) and engage in complex financial negotiations with developers, a foundational understanding of real estate principles has become essential. The study analyzes the effects of specific externalities—including traffic, floodplains, and high voltage transmission lines (HVTLs)—on property valuation through applied case studies and core appraisal concepts like market value and "Highest and Best Use." Furthermore, the paper addresses broader economic dynamics, evaluating feasibility …
Characterization Of Rapid Thermal Oxidation Of 200 Mm Silicon Wafers For Ulsi Applications, Ashur J. Atanos
Characterization Of Rapid Thermal Oxidation Of 200 Mm Silicon Wafers For Ulsi Applications, Ashur J. Atanos
Master's Projects
Rapid thermal oxidation of silicon is widely being utilized in growing very thin oxide films used in applications such as gate dielectric in ULSI MOS devices. RTO can be affected by the size and condition of wafer and heating method. Earlier RTO studies have used smaller wafers. Due to existing competition between device manufacturers, RTO's process development efforts for current 8-inch wafers have remained unpublished.
RTO process for 8-inch silicon wafers was studied. The effects of process variables such as time, temperature, ramp rate, and gas ratio on oxidation were investigated. Tests were conducted at temperature range of 1050-1150 °C …

Traffic Control For Automated Highway Systems: A Conceptual Framework, H.-S. Jacob Tsao
Traffic Control For Automated Highway Systems: A Conceptual Framework, H.-S. Jacob Tsao
Faculty Publications
This paper proposes a conceptual framework for designing a traffic control scheme. It adopts a top-down approach to defining major design steps starting with high-level feature definition. With the desired features defined, the top-down approach then identifies and defines moves and related planning and movement functions that are required for supporting the desired features. The paper takes a systems view and identifies the safety issues regarding the movement coordination of the large number of vehicles on an Automated Highway System (AHS).

A description of three three projects having to do with virtual reality. The first is the Nanomanipulator, developed at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Department of Computer Science in conjunction with the UCLA Department of Chemistry in 1991. It is a machine that allows the user to interact with microscopic particles previously only visible in 2D from an electron microscope. The second project, The Augmented Reality Project, also developed at the Chapel Hill Department of Computer Science. This device used ultrasound images to be placed over a body allowing the user to see inside of it. The final …
