Singular And Plural Non-Deterministic Parameters, Sigurd Meldal, M. A. Walicki Aug 1997

Singular And Plural Non-Deterministic Parameters, Sigurd Meldal, M. A. Walicki

Faculty Publications

The article defines algebraic semantics of singular (call-time-choice) and plural (run-time-choice) nondeterministic parameter passing and presents a specification language in which operations with both kinds of parameters can be defined simultaneously. Sound and complete calculi for both semantics are introduced. We study the relations between the two semantics and point out that axioms for operations with plural arguments may be considered as axiom schemata for operations with singular arguments.

An Analysis Of Tropical Transport: Influence Of The Quasi-Biennial Oscillation, Eugene C. Cordero, S. Randolph Kawa, Mark R. Schoeberl Jul 1997

An Analysis Of Tropical Transport: Influence Of The Quasi-Biennial Oscillation, Eugene C. Cordero, S. Randolph Kawa, Mark R. Schoeberl

Faculty Publications, Meteorology and Climate Science

An analysis of over 4 years of Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) measurements of CH4, HF, O3, and zonal wind are used to study the influence of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) on constituent transport in the tropics. At the equator, spectral analysis of the Halogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE) and Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) observations reveals QBO signals in constituent and temperature fields at altitudes between 20 and 45 km. Between these altitudes, the location of the maximum QBO amplitude roughly corresponds with the location of the largest vertical gradient in the constituent field. Thus, at 40 …

Application Of Intelligent Agent Techniques In Manufacturing Integration, Prithish Negi May 1997

Application Of Intelligent Agent Techniques In Manufacturing Integration, Prithish Negi

Master's Projects

This project presents an object-oriented model for manufacturing integration utilizing Intelligent Agent techniques. The integration requirements are determined by increasing productivity, flexibility and quality demand. The model is based on the concept of Intelligent agents supporting various activities. The complex manufacturing functions are broken down into elemental tasks. An agent then automates the task. An Intelligent Agent is an autonomous software program that can operate independently and usually remotely. Agents can communicate with each other, human beings, machines and other resources such as databases. The use of standardized means of communication through widely accepted protocols is recommended. Agents have been …

Advanced Brushless Spindle Motors In Computer Hard Disk Drives, Bao Trinh May 1997

Advanced Brushless Spindle Motors In Computer Hard Disk Drives, Bao Trinh

Master's Projects

The trend of increasing storage capacity and decreasing form factor is still a key challenge in hard disk drive (HDD) development. The next generation models of high performance hard drives will require spindle motors of higher speed with low cogging torque and ripples to reduce vibration and be able to pack more data tracks. The main causes of vibration in the spindle motor, which results in acoustic noise in the drive are the defects of rolling ball bearing and magnet-pole/stator-slot configurations. This thesis project focuses on the slotless stator and non-contact bearing in the spindle motor. Some fundamental aspects of …

Analytical Models For Vehicle/Gap Distribution On Automated Highway Systems, Jacob Tsao, Randolph W. Hall, Indrajit Chatterjee Jan 1997

Analytical Models For Vehicle/Gap Distribution On Automated Highway Systems, Jacob Tsao, Randolph W. Hall, Indrajit Chatterjee

Faculty Publications

Highway congestion has in recent years become a pervasive problem for urban and suburban areas alike. The concept of Automated Highway Systems is based on the belief that integration of sensing, communication, and control technologies into vehicles and highways can lead to a large improvement in capacity and safety without requiring a significant amount of additional highway right-of-way. A fundamental determinant of Automated Highway Systems capacity is the vehicle-following rule, the rule that governs the behavior of vehicles traveling along a common lane (e.g., the spacing between any two longitudinally adjacent vehicles). Vehicle following affects the longitudinal capacity (achievable flow …

Structural And Dynamical Uncertainties In Modelling Axisymmetric Elliptical Galaxies, Aaron J. Romanowsky, C. S. Kochanek Jan 1997

Structural And Dynamical Uncertainties In Modelling Axisymmetric Elliptical Galaxies, Aaron J. Romanowsky, C. S. Kochanek

Faculty Publications

Quantitative dynamical models of galaxies require deprojection of the observed surface brightness to determine the luminosity density of the galaxy. Existing deprojection methods for axisymmetric galaxies assume that a unique deprojection exists for any given inclination, even though the projected density is known to be degenerate to the addition of ‘konus densities’ that are invisible in projection. We develop a deprojection method based on linear regularization that can explore the range of luminosity densities that are statistically consistent with an observed surface brightness distribution. The luminosity density is poorly constrained at modest inclinations (i ≿ 30°), even in the limit …

Random Walks On Wheels, Matthew Lee, Mark Stamp Jan 1997

Random Walks On Wheels, Matthew Lee, Mark Stamp

Faculty Publications, Computer Science

Suppose two particles occupy distinct vertices of a wheel graph and at each step the two particles move independently to adjacent vertices. In this paper we find the expected number of moves until the particles land on the same vertex.

Complexes Between Nascent Polypeptides And Their Molecular Chaperones In The Cytosol Of Mammalian Cells, Daryl K. Eggers, W. J. Welch, W. J. Hansen Jan 1997

Complexes Between Nascent Polypeptides And Their Molecular Chaperones In The Cytosol Of Mammalian Cells, Daryl K. Eggers, W. J. Welch, W. J. Hansen

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

Folding of newly synthesized proteins in vivo is believed to be facilitated by the cooperative interaction of a defined group of proteins known as molecular chaperones. We investigated the direct interaction of chaperones with nascent polypeptides in the cytosol of mammalian cells by multiple methods. A new approach using a polyclonal antibody to puromycin allowed us to tag and capture a population of truncated nascent polypeptides with no bias as to the identity of the bound chaperones. In addition, antibodies that recognize the cytosolic chaperones hsp70, CCT (TRiC), hsp40, p48 (Hip), and hsp90 were compared on the basis of their …

The "Hoover" Project: Home Occupants Vehicular Electronic Reconnaissance, Kelvin Chan Jan 1997

The "Hoover" Project: Home Occupants Vehicular Electronic Reconnaissance, Kelvin Chan

SWITCH

The article explains telepresence, as well as its potential in safety and security, along with its traditional usage of traversing dangerous situations. This article describes a dystopian plan to place drones equipped with cameras and microphones in all homes in the Silicon Valley as a vehicle for telepresence. The data achieved through this method would also be stored into a public domain browser on the internet, free for anyone in the public to view, including larger corporations and the government. The idea behind this is the assimilation of data behind all cultures for understanding and to assist law enforcement in …

Three-Dimensional Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Method For Slider Air Bearings, Alejandro Garcia, W. Huang, D. B. Bogy Jan 1997

Three-Dimensional Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Method For Slider Air Bearings, Alejandro Garcia, W. Huang, D. B. Bogy

Faculty Publications

The direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method is used to solve the three-dimensional nano-scale gas film lubrication problem between a gas bearing slider and a rotating disk, and this solution is compared to the numerical solution of the compressible Reynolds equations with the slip flow correction based on the linearized Boltzmann equation as presented by Fukui and Kaneko [molecular gas film lubrication (MGL) method] [ASME J. Tribol. 110, 253 (1988)]. In the DSMC method, hundreds of thousands of simulated particles are used and their three velocity components and three spatial coordinates are calculated and recorded by using a hard-sphere collision …
