An Interpretation Of Martian Thermospheric Waves Based On Analysis Of A General Circulation Model, Manoj Joshi, Jeffery Hollingsworth, Robert Haberle, Alison Bridger Mar 2000

An Interpretation Of Martian Thermospheric Waves Based On Analysis Of A General Circulation Model, Manoj Joshi, Jeffery Hollingsworth, Robert Haberle, Alison Bridger

Faculty Publications, Meteorology and Climate Science

Planetary‐scale longitudinal variations in density observed by the Mars Global Surveyor accelerometer in the 125 km region can be qualitatively reproduced by the NASA Ames Mars general circulation model in the 80 km altitude region, but only when locations having specific local times are used in the analysis. If the model results are averaged over all local times, the high‐altitude longitudinal variations nearly disappear, leaving only a small stationary wave 1 pattern, consistent with theory and previous modeling studies. This analysis suggests that the observed wavelike structures are a result of sampling tidal modes at a limited range of local …

The New Performer, Sheila A. Malone Jan 2000

The New Performer, Sheila A. Malone

SWITCH

This article presents a discussion of the broadening definitions of performer and performance and the ways in which technology contributes to that flexibility through this intermix of the real world and its interaction with virtual reality. The author then details how the nature of this relationship not only shifts the role of performer but redefines performance as both real and virtual. She argues how new media in the age of technology has opened the doors for its visual, aural and textual information to both mimic and record reality.

Silicon Valley Reinvents The Company Town, Jan English-Lueck Jan 2000

Silicon Valley Reinvents The Company Town, Jan English-Lueck

Faculty Publications, Anthropology

California's Silicon Valley, famous for its innovative high-technology corporations, makes an ideal laboratory for exploring certain cultural inventions. It is a bellwether for a particular kind of social order—one dominated by work. In anthropology we encounter many frameworks through which life is organized—kinship, religion, and politics. Work is another lens through which life can be filtered. People may move to California for the weather, but they go to Silicon Valley to work. High-technology work draws on a global pool of talent and shifting skills that creates a culturally complex community. Migrants to Silicon Valley bring and enact an image of …

On The Error Performance Of 8-Vsb Tcm Decoder For Atsc Terrestrial Broadcasting Of Digital Television, Dojun Rhee, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza Jan 2000

On The Error Performance Of 8-Vsb Tcm Decoder For Atsc Terrestrial Broadcasting Of Digital Television, Dojun Rhee, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza

Faculty Publications

The error performance of various 8-VSB TCM decoders for reception of terrestrial digital television is analyzed. In previous work, 8-state TCM decoders were proposed and implemented for terrestrial broadcasting of digital television. In this paper, the performance of a 16-state TCM decoder is analyzed and simulated. It is shown that not only a 16-state TCM decoder outperforms one with 8-states, but it also has much smaller error coefficients.

Solid State Phase Transitions Characterized By Esr And Xas, Juana Vivó Acrivos Jan 2000

Solid State Phase Transitions Characterized By Esr And Xas, Juana Vivó Acrivos

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

Measurements of the relaxation time,  of electron systems to a disturbance, by two different spectroscopic methods are examined in detail, with the purpose to establish how the presence of fluctuations near a solid state phase transition are made evident in insulators, conductors and superconductors. The absolute temperature and the relaxation time determine the thermodynamic stability of the electronic system near a phase transition by the Uncertainty Principle. At a given temperature T, Landau and Lifshitz obtain the stability from the lower limit of the uncertainty in entropy in units of the Boltzmann constant, S/kB << 1 when T  >> 3.82 K ps. Magnetic resonance …

Spin-Exchange Term In The Solvent Equation Of State Near The Critical Point For Electron Transfer Reactions, Juana Vivó Acrivos Jan 2000

Spin-Exchange Term In The Solvent Equation Of State Near The Critical Point For Electron Transfer Reactions, Juana Vivó Acrivos

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

Phenomenological Equations of State (EOS) for fluids near their critical point have been obtained using literature compression factor data, Zc = Pc Vc/(n R Tc) = 0.40 to 0.10 in Table I (Pc, Vc/n, Tc are the pressure, volume per n mole, and the absolute temperature of the fluid at the critical point). The objective is to explain the deviations from the van der Waals value, Zc(vdW) = 3/8 (-70 % for molten Se and alkali metals up to 6 % for molten Pb, Hg, and In) by including in the commonly used phenomenological thermodynamic relations a term which explicitly …

Ideaconsciousness Networks, Wendy Angel Jan 2000

Ideaconsciousness Networks, Wendy Angel

SWITCH

In this article, the author utilizes a theoretical approach to discuss the complexity of digital networks and the necessary cognitive adaptations humans need to process the amount of information shared over them. Several propositions are discussed including fuzziness, conscious Ideation, knowledge networks, idea structures, and idea coercion. It is theorized that ideas make up our consciousness and provide a more open definition to the experiences that combine the cognitive process. However, the fuzziness of uncertainty also raises ideas of its essential factor in our conscious exploration and that fuzziness of knowledge does not make knowledge obsolete. This posits that there …

Transportation System In Malaysian Rural Areas, Hamidah Yusof May 1999

Transportation System In Malaysian Rural Areas, Hamidah Yusof

Master's Projects

This study aims to generate an empirical transportation model to facilitate and improve mobility in the rural areas of Malaysia. Mobility is a catalyst for economic and social development of the rural areas. Residents in the villages face two main problems: limited public transportation services and minimum goods transportation facilities. The number of passenger trips and trips for transporting goods is still at a minimum level which affects the planning of better transportation systems. Private companies and operators are not interested in investing in public transportation services as profits are uncertain.

Three villages in Malaysia have been selected for the …

An Interview With David Brin, Switch Staffs

SWITCH

This is an interview with David Brin, a science fiction author, and the Switch staff. They discuss some topics of Brin’s book, "The Transparent Society". The main hypothesis of this book is reciprocal surveillance for accountability and decentralization of power. Brin discusses his thoughts on privacy, such as real privacy, illusory privacy, and a third kind of privacy. He goes on to connect surveillance with power and the government. He continues with how people react to the advances of technology and how they learn from past generations.

An Interview With Sadie Plant, Switch Staffs Apr 1999

An Interview With Sadie Plant, Switch Staffs

SWITCH

The interview is conducted with Sadie Plant in a variety of subjects. Plant discusses the topic of centralized and distributed organizational structures. Practical implementation of organizations will tend to have elements of both centralized and distributed structures. Additionally, it is beneficial to mainstream organizations to incorporate or recuperate activist or grassroots distributed elements in order to bring in new energies, thoughts, and ideas. The discussion then shifts to drugs and information control. Plant argues that drugs and information have similar characteristics in that both have the ability to change perception and thoughts. The tools that governments use to control and …
