Research on the personality of creative scientists is revisited using the Neo-Socioanalytic model of personality psychology as an organizing framework. Past research shows that creative scientists, largely from the 20th century, were distinguished by high levels of openness to experience, dominance, ambition, intelligence, and low levels of agreeableness. Contradictory findings for environmental influences highlighted the potential importance of both supportive and adverse diversifying experiences. Developmental trends also run contrary to the likelihood of scientific creativity occurring later in life, which is consistent with the life span models of creativity. Based on this review, we highlight much needed updating to the …

Finite Rigid Sets In Sphere Complexes, Edgar A. Bering, Christopher J. Leininger Apr 2024

Finite Rigid Sets In Sphere Complexes, Edgar A. Bering, Christopher J. Leininger

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

A subcomplex X≤C of a simplicial complex is strongly rigid if every locally injective, simplicial map X→C is the restriction of a unique automorphism of C. Aramayona and the second author proved that the curve complex of an orientable surface can be exhausted by finite strongly rigid sets. The Hatcher sphere complex is an analog of the curve complex for isotopy classes of essential spheres in a connect sum of n copies of S1×S2. We show that there is an exhaustion of the sphere complex by finite strongly rigid sets for all n≥3 and that when n=2 the sphere complex …

The proposed multiple scaled contaminated asymmetric Laplace (MSCAL) distribution is an extension of the multivariate asymmetric Laplace distribution to allow for a different excess kurtosis on each dimension and for more flexible shapes of the hyper-contours. These peculiarities are obtained by working on the principal component (PC) space. The structure of the MSCAL distribution has the further advantage of allowing for automatic PC-wise outlier detection – i.e., detection of outliers separately on each PC – when convenient constraints on the parameters are imposed. The MSCAL is fitted using a Monte Carlo expectation-maximization (MCEM) algorithm that uses a Monte Carlo method …

Eta Carinae underwent the Great Eruption in the 1840s and a Lesser Eruption in the 1890s. Its apparent spectrum, modified by intervening ejecta, the Homunculus and Little Homunculus, continues to evolve but contains information pertaining to events in the 19th century. The LOS spectrum contains narrow absorption velocities, from -122 to -1665 km/s: rungs of a broken ladder caused by shells formed by the interacting winds. Estimated shell origin dates correlate with origin dates of expanding emission structures preceding the Great Eruption. The LOS absorption velocities extend the record post Great Eruption to the Lesser Eruption. We suggest that these …
