The Relationship Between Foliations Of The Plane, Kaplan Diagrams, And Non-Hausdorff 1-Manifolds, Monique Justine Howe Jul 2026

The Relationship Between Foliations Of The Plane, Kaplan Diagrams, And Non-Hausdorff 1-Manifolds, Monique Justine Howe

Master's Theses

In this paper we seek to explain the relationship between foliations of the plane, Kaplan diagrams, and simply connected non-Hausdorff 1-manifolds with countable basis that are orientable with an ordering on branch points. We will walk the reader through the definitions of all of these objects, and provide examples with a focus on the motivating example of the Reeb foliation. This paper will describe and define the known bijection from the set of foliations of the plane, F, to the set of Kaplan diagrams, K, its inverse, and the one-to-one map from F to the set of simply connected non-Hausdorff …

Accessibility Fairness Practices In Ai Applications For People With Disabilities, Megan Gross Jul 2026

Accessibility Fairness Practices In Ai Applications For People With Disabilities, Megan Gross

Master's Theses

Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) improve the lives of people every day with tools like the auto-captioning of videos, improved screen-reader capabilities, and advanced mobility control through speech. However, are all groups of people benefiting from AI or are some being overlooked and left out? Although AI tools made for people with disabilities (PWDs) have improved their lives, AI for the general population generally ignores the experiences of PWDs, making them unable to interact with and benefit from technology. This research evaluates ChatGPT and Gemini in Gmail for usability fairness and analyzes how current regulations and development processes fail to …

Diagrammatic Methods For Calculating Correlation Functions In Low-Dimensional Quantum Gravity, Nicholas A. Parrilla Jul 2026

Diagrammatic Methods For Calculating Correlation Functions In Low-Dimensional Quantum Gravity, Nicholas A. Parrilla

Master's Theses

This thesis investigates connections between random matrix theory and low-dimensional quantum gravity through the spectral form factor (SFF), a well-studied function that characterizes correlations in the eigenvalue spectrum of an operator. In random matrix ensembles, a feature of the SFF known as the “ramp” is governed by universal spectral correlations, and in Jackiw–Teitelboim (JT) gravity this regime is due to the double-trumpet wormhole geometry. We study the connected correlation functions underlying the SFF using combinatorial, diagrammatic methods from a mathematical formalism known as second-order free probability theory, where they are expressed in terms of annular noncrossing permutations. To access a …

Hydrus Modeling Of A Sahelian Agroforestry System: An Investigation Of Local Water Balance, Nicole A. Butler Jul 2026

Hydrus Modeling Of A Sahelian Agroforestry System: An Investigation Of Local Water Balance, Nicole A. Butler

Master's Theses

Effects of drought can devastate agricultural productivity in the West African Sahel. Climate complexities, such as lower-than-average rainfall and high winds, can lead to crop failure and low yields, thereby creating food security issues. Agriculture in the Sahel is primarily rainfed, and the rain is becoming increasingly unpredictable due to the changing climate. The method of intercropping groundnut (Arachis hypogea) and pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) with the shrub species Piliostigma reticulatum can combat the effects of climate change and restore degraded soil. Intercropping can increase water availability and crop yield when compared to crops grown in the absence of shrubs. …

Pipeline Optimization Of Agentic Llms For Text-To-Sql, Peter Conant Jul 2026

Pipeline Optimization Of Agentic Llms For Text-To-Sql, Peter Conant

Master's Theses

Current database interfaces limit users’ interaction to those with technical skills, creating timely roadblocks for non-technical professionals. Text-to-SQL aims to simplify database interactions by translating natural language questions into database queries, but long-standing challenges like question understanding, question-schema linking, and SQL generation have held the field back. In the AI era, foundational LLMs prove to be very capable of question understanding SQL, perform well in Schema Linking, Generation, and Evaluation tasks. However the cost to run these model is a hurdle for many organization with low funds and resources. Text-to-SQL solutions often operate across large enterprise size databases with, and …

Monoids With K-Strictly Local Geodesic Languages, William M. Hong Jul 2026

Monoids With K-Strictly Local Geodesic Languages, William M. Hong

Master's Theses

A paper by Gilman, Hermiller, Holt and Rees (2011) prove that a group G finitely generated by X is virtually free if and only if the language of geodesics words in G over X is k-strictly local if and only if the word problem is context-free. If M is a monoid finitely generated by X, we define Γu(M,X) to be the underlying, undirected graph of Γ(M,X). We prove that if the language of geodesics in Γu(M,X) based at the identity is k-strictly local, then the monoid and semi-group word problems are context-free.

Fermat's Last Theorem Over Quadratic Number Fields, Richie Tay Jul 2026

Fermat's Last Theorem Over Quadratic Number Fields, Richie Tay

Master's Theses

Fermat’s Last Theorem states that the equation xn + yn = zn has no nontrivial integer solutions for n ≥ 3. While the rational case is completely solved, the situation over quadratic number fields is not as straightforward. For some exponents nontrivial solutions exist, while for others they do not. This thesis studies Fermat-type equations over quadratic number fields, combining classical methods with more modern techniques from the theory of elliptic curves. The thesis first reviews the rational cases n = 2, n = 3, n = 4, then develops the necessary background on quadratic number fields, including rings of …

Selected California State University Cybersecurity Readiness Policies And Related Guidance For Staff: A Qualitative Document Analysis, Andrew Hung-Nguyen

Dissertations

This study examines the cybersecurity and data privacy policy guiding the staff in the following four California State University campuses: Long Beach, San Bernardino, Chico, and Northridge. The purpose is to evaluate how institutional policies communicate expectations for staff and support cybersecurity readiness. Using a qualitative document analysis approach, the study analyzes publicly available policy documents as primary data sources. The analysis is guided by three frameworks, as follows: Weidman’s framework (2018), which assesses the presence of key policy elements; Karakoç’s framework (2022), which evaluates the depth of policy content; and the Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level formulas …

Examining Beliefs Of State Department Of Education Directors Of Assessment Regarding Standardized Testing, Sara L. Kendallen Jul 2026

Examining Beliefs Of State Department Of Education Directors Of Assessment Regarding Standardized Testing, Sara L. Kendallen

Dissertations

Directors of assessment in state departments of education are tasked with the planning and oversight, including development, field-testing, validation, and operationalization of statewide assessments. At the state level, directors of assessment are pivotal to a department of education’s ability to meet state and federal testing requirements. Directors of assessment hold their own opinions and beliefs, which may or may not be aligned with current adopted policies. The beliefs of those in state level educational bureaucracies about standardized testing has not been well-researched. It is hoped that this research will add to the greater understanding of statewide assessment. The goal of …

Can Curriculum Improve Confidence? Examining The Impact Of The Implementation Of The California Math Framework On Math Anxiety Levels Of Preservice Teachers In California, Amanda Lubbs

Dissertations

In 2010, the state of California adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) as an effort to ensure students were graduating high school as college and career ready. Shortly after, in 2013, the California Board of Education adopted the California Math Framework (CMF) as a tool for schools to implement the CCSS for Mathematics (CCSSM). Its recommendations incorporated research-based techniques to alleviate math anxiety through the use of explorative learning experiences that help students understand math skills in applied contexts, and by de-emphasizing rote practice and memorization. This study inquires about the framework’s effectiveness in mitigating math anxiety among pre-service …

"A Door To The Future." A Case Study In Exploratory And Culturally Sustaining Theater Curriculum, Verónica Meza

Dissertations

This study addresses the persistent inequities in access to quality arts education for Latino immigrant and linguistically diverse communities in California. Despite progressive initiatives such as Proposition 28 (The Arts and Music in Schools Act) and the California Arts Council's Racial Equity Statement, systemic barriers prevent Latino and immigrant students from benefiting equitably from the arts. The central objective of this project is to understand how an exploratory, culturally sustaining theater curriculum can serve as a transformative and healing vehicle for adult immigrant Latino students, providing emotional protection, cultural affirmation, and language preservation within a U.S. educational context. This qualitative …

An Untouched Gem: Understanding Parental Perceptions On Community College Attendance, Harshdeep Singh Nanda Jul 2026

An Untouched Gem: Understanding Parental Perceptions On Community College Attendance, Harshdeep Singh Nanda

Dissertations

Community colleges serve as critical entry points into higher education, yet they continue to carry stigma, particularly within affluent communities where four-year institutions are often positioned as the expected pathway. While existing research has examined student and public perceptions, little attention has been given to how parents in affluent regions shape and transmit these narratives. This study investigated how parents in an affluent region of the San Francisco Bay Area perceive community college as a starting point for their children’s academic careers and how parents may contribute to shifting those perceptions. Using a convergent parallel mixed methods design, survey data …

Probabilistic Metric Dimension, Kyle Worley Jul 2026

Probabilistic Metric Dimension, Kyle Worley

Master's Theses

The metric dimension of a graph G is the smallest number of unique vertices (often called “marked vertices” or “landmarks”) such that each vertex has a unique distance to the marked vertices. If a set of vertices S ⊆ V (G) when marked gives all vertices unique distances, it is called a resolving set. Hence if G is a graph with a resolving set S, then for all v, u ∈ V (G) there exists s ∈ S such that d(v, s) ̸= d(u, s). The metric dimension dim(G) = min(|S|). Two widely studied variants exist, one where edges are …

Rational Non-Euclidean Triangles And Elliptic Curves, Tyler Morales Jul 2026

Rational Non-Euclidean Triangles And Elliptic Curves, Tyler Morales

Master's Theses

We say a triangle △ is rational if its side lengths are rational. For a geometry of constant curvature κ, we say △ is a rational triangle if the generalized tangents of its side lengths are rational. We are able to parameterize rational triangles having the same inradius and semiperimeter on an plane curve, write a bijection between the rational points on this curve and triples of side lengths, and show that this curve is an elliptic curve. Then, we write a general transformation for our plane curve to short Weierstrass form to compute ranks and add points easily using …

A Step-By-Step Shor's Algorithm Walkthrough: From Theory To Implementation, Trung Nguyen, Samuel Petruescu, Shrikant Jadhav, Hiu Yung Wong Jul 2026

A Step-By-Step Shor's Algorithm Walkthrough: From Theory To Implementation, Trung Nguyen, Samuel Petruescu, Shrikant Jadhav, Hiu Yung Wong

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Quantum computing is inherently abstract and often counterintuitive from the perspective of classical physics. For learners to develop a deeper understanding, it is useful to study a practical example thoroughly, from its mathematical formalism to quantum circuit implementation. Shor's algorithm for period finding, which can then be used for prime factorization, is demonstrated in this paper due to its practical significance. While numerous publications on Shor's algorithm exist, they tend to focus on advanced theoretical analysis, specific implementation details, or narrowly defined research aspects; consequently, they are often not well-suited for educational purposes for beginning and intermediate learners. This paper …

Preparing Today’S Workforce For Tomorrow’S Autonomous Transportation: Bridging Electrical And Civil Engineering Disciplines, Masoud Ghodrat Abadi, Rohollah Moghadam

Mineta Transportation Institute

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are expected to transform transportation systems and reshape workforce needs across engineering and related fields. Although existing AV workforce development efforts often emphasize electrical engineering, computer science, and mechanical engineering, transportation engineering remains underrepresented despite its importance to infrastructure, traffic operations, safety, and mobility integration. This study addresses that gap through the development, implementation, and evaluation of an interdisciplinary certificate program, Workforce for Autonomous Vehicle Engineering (WAVE), at California State University, Sacramento. The program was designed to bridge transportation engineering and electrical engineering through a two-step curriculum model consisting of theoretical educational modules and hands-on laboratory activities. …

Addressing Data Scarcity In Malware Classification Via Pixel-Level Synthetic Image Generation, Mounika Krishna Teja Karumudi, Fabio Di Troia Jun 2026

Addressing Data Scarcity In Malware Classification Via Pixel-Level Synthetic Image Generation, Mounika Krishna Teja Karumudi, Fabio Di Troia

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Deep learning-based malware classification using image representations has emerged as a highly effective paradigm for threat detection. However, training robust neural networks is frequently bottlenecked by data scarcity and severe class imbalances in real-world repositories. This study investigates the viability of using an autoregressive PixelCNN framework to synthesize high-fidelity, class-specific malware images to augment limited training distributions. Utilizing the benchmark Malimg dataset, we systematically evaluate a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classifier across varying ratios of synthetic-to-authentic data under strict data scarcity constraints (ranging from 10 to 80 authentic samples per family). Our experimental results reveal that while PixelCNN successfully replicates …

Semantic-Geometric Decoupling For Universal Spatial Anchoring In Extended Reality, Danila Kharitonenkov, Haichao Miao, Vuthea Chheang Jun 2026

Semantic-Geometric Decoupling For Universal Spatial Anchoring In Extended Reality, Danila Kharitonenkov, Haichao Miao, Vuthea Chheang

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The Vision Language Models (VLMs) demonstrate remarkable performance in semantic reasoning tasks. However, it is still challenging for them to fully understand 3D spatial environment. Trained on 2D data, the model does not understand the relationship between positions and the first-person viewpoint, leading to viewpoint confusion, which is especially evident during egocentric tasks. The VLMs use 2D image Red-Green-Blue channel (RGB) pattern matching instead of actual point cloud coordinates for distance calculations. This modality could prevent the model’s 3D space geometry understanding, and leads to metric hallucination, as the model guesses the distance without mathematical calculations. In addition, the industrial …

System Branding In Three Public Libraries: Live Oak Public Libraries, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, And Richland Library, Patrick Roughen Jun 2026

System Branding In Three Public Libraries: Live Oak Public Libraries, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, And Richland Library, Patrick Roughen

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This article examines library catalogs as brand artifacts in the context of two ancient libraries: the Library of Alexandria and the library of the Temple of Horus at Edfu, Egypt. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of symbolic capital and brand theory, this research argues that the catalogs of these two institutions functioned as early branding instruments. The Pinakes, the catalog of the Library of Alexandria, projected a brand of universal knowledge and intellectual prestige, and the inscribed wall catalog at Edfu reflected a brand focused on sacred authority and the sustaining of cosmic order (Ma'at).  Together, they illustrate two opposing …

Non-Negotiable Responsibilities Of Librarians Despite The Presence Of Generative-Ai Powered Chatbots: An Overview, Emmanuel Chidiadi Onwubiko Jun 2026

Non-Negotiable Responsibilities Of Librarians Despite The Presence Of Generative-Ai Powered Chatbots: An Overview, Emmanuel Chidiadi Onwubiko

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The presence of AI-Chatbots as linguistic models of Generative AI is one that has sent cold in the spines of librarians for the fear of the unknown.  Against this backdrop, it is received with mixed feelings.  To some librarians, it poses threats to their traditional responsibilities hence the fear of losing their jobs.  This paper conceptualizes the place of generative-AI Chatbots in libraries and their limitations, identifying some non-negotiable responsibilities of librarians regardless of the emergence of AI-Chatbots as well as clearing some doubts as expressed by librarians by reconciling the impacts of Chatbot and how librarians can leverage the …

Revisiting Representation Learning For Natural Language Processing From The Fundamentals For Misinformation Detection, Vishnu S. Pendyala Jun 2026

Revisiting Representation Learning For Natural Language Processing From The Fundamentals For Misinformation Detection, Vishnu S. Pendyala

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

While existing language embeddings achieve high accuracy on benchmark tasks, recent studies suggest they often struggle to distinguish true from false statements. This work argues that new representation learning and aggregation strategies are needed, especially those that adapt to misinformation's evolving patterns and incorporate explainability. As a first step, we explore two directions: (1) aggregation strategies inspired by signal processing, where word embeddings are transformed into spectrogram-like representations for classification to overcome context window limitations, and (2) future extensions using dynamic neural architectures such as Neural ODEs, Liquid Time-Constant Networks (LTCs), Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks (KANs), and Legendre Memory Units (LMUs). Preliminary …

Electron And Hole Surface Roughness Scattering-Limited Mobilities In Oxygen-Inserted (Oi) Si Channel, Vikram Magendar, Yi Ann Chen, Albert Lu, Donghun Kang, Daniel Connelly, Marek Hytha, Hideki Takeuchi, Robert Mears, Hiu Yung Wong May 2026

Electron And Hole Surface Roughness Scattering-Limited Mobilities In Oxygen-Inserted (Oi) Si Channel, Vikram Magendar, Yi Ann Chen, Albert Lu, Donghun Kang, Daniel Connelly, Marek Hytha, Hideki Takeuchi, Robert Mears, Hiu Yung Wong

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The electron and hole surface roughness scattering (SRS)-limited mobilities, deconvolved from 4.2 K measurements, were compared between oxygen-inserted (OI) and control Si channel for n- and pMOSFETs. It was found that electron SRS-limited mobility in the OI-Si channel is 55% higher, whereas hole SRS-limited mobility is comparable to the control. To elucidate the difference, the Si/Si O2 interface roughness and the nanoscale thickness variation of the gate oxide were analyzed in detail, via high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images, and fed into numerical calculation of the SRS-limited mobility. The power spectral densities (PSDs) based on the Yule–Walker autoregressive model revealed that …

Clustering Data With Values Missing At Random Using Scale Mixtures Of Multivariate Skew-Normal Distributions, Jason Pillay, Cristina Tortora, Antonio Punzo, Andriette Bekker May 2026

Clustering Data With Values Missing At Random Using Scale Mixtures Of Multivariate Skew-Normal Distributions, Jason Pillay, Cristina Tortora, Antonio Punzo, Andriette Bekker

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Handling missing data is a major challenge in model-based clustering, especially when the data exhibit skewness and heavy tails. We address this by extending the finite mixture of scale mixtures of multivariate skew-normal (FMSMSN) family to accommodate incomplete data under a missing at random (MAR) mechanism. Unlike previous work that is limited to one of the special cases of the FMSMSN family, our method offers a cluster analysis methodology for the entire family that accounts for skewness and excess kurtosis amidst data with missing values. The multivariate skew-normal distribution, as parameterised by Azzalini and Dalla Valle (Biometrika 83(4):715–726, 1996) and …

Ramsey, Jason E. Owen, W. Christopher Skidmore, Amy E. Street, Katherine Taylor, Margaret Anne Mackintosh

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Background: Military sexual trauma (MST) can have significant adverse effects on mental health and well-being, often leading to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and maladaptive beliefs. Although effective psychotherapies exist, stigma, confidentiality concerns, and systemic barriers often hinder help-seeking among service members and veterans. Mobile mental health apps offer an accessible and anonymous support alternative, potentially addressing such barriers. However, app effectiveness depends on user engagement and emerging evidence suggests that engagement may be shaped by symptom severity. Objective: This retrospective observational study aimed to explore the relationship between posttraumatic symptom severity and user engagement with Beyond MST (US Department …

Power Fuzzy Clustering: Flexible Distance Metrics And Inclusion Of Covariates, Phuc T. Nguyen, Cristina Tortora, Antonio Punzo Apr 2026

Power Fuzzy Clustering: Flexible Distance Metrics And Inclusion Of Covariates, Phuc T. Nguyen, Cristina Tortora, Antonio Punzo

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Clustering is a fundamental task in statistics and machine learning aimed at identifying homogeneous groups within data. Among the available approaches, fuzzy clustering (FC) is particularly suited to poorly separated boundaries, as it allows partial memberships and captures uncertainty and overlapping structures. We introduce power fuzzy clustering (PFC), a general framework that unifies several FC methods, including fuzzy K-means and probabilistic distance clustering. By complementing the classical fuzzifier with a power parameter on distances, PFC enhances model flexibility while retaining interpretability. To accommodate clusters with different shapes and scales, we incorporate a volume parameter and alternative distance metrics (e.g., Mahalanobis …
