Populations with obesity are more likely to fall and exhibit balance instability. The reason for this is likely multifactorial, but there is some evidence that sensory function is impaired during obesity. We tested the hypothesis that muscle proprioceptor function is compromised in a mouse model of diet induced obesity. An in vitro muscle-nerve preparation was used to record muscle spindle afferent responses to physiological stretch and sinusoidal vibration. We compared the responses of C57/Bl6 male and female mice on a control diet (10% kcal fat) with those eating a high fat diet (HFD; 60% kcal fat) for 10 weeks (final …

Leveraging The Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act (Wioa) To Help Finance College & University Career Centers, Daniel Newell
Master's Projects
This research explores whether career services for the adult and dislocated worker populations of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) can be leveraged to provide career services in a college or university setting to serve students and the public while meeting WIOA’s enrollment goals. For colleges and universities without career centers, leveraging WIOA funding may be a solution to increasing career center resources and expanding existing career services, while augmenting program support through federal funding.

We present observational constraints on the stellar populations of two ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) using optical through near-infrared (NIR) spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting. Our analysis is enabled by new Spitzer-IRAC 3.6 and 4.5 μm imaging, archival optical imaging, and the prospectorfully Bayesian SED fitting framework. Our sample contains one field UDG (DGSAT I), one Virgo cluster UDG (VCC 1287), and one Virgo cluster dwarf elliptical for comparison (VCC 1122). We find that the optical–NIR colors of the three galaxies are significantly different from each other. We infer that VCC 1287 has an old (7.7 Gyr) and surprisingly metal-poor …

The recent discovery of massive black holes (BHs) in the centers of high-mass ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) suggests that at least some are the stripped nuclear star clusters of dwarf galaxies. We present the first study that investigates whether such massive BHs, and therefore stripped nuclei, also exist in low-mass (M < 107 M ⊙) UCDs. We constrain the BH masses of two UCDs located in Centaurus A (UCD 320 and UCD 330) using Jeans modeling of the resolved stellar kinematics from adaptive optics data obtained with the SINFONI integral field spectrograph at the Very Large Telescope (VLT/SINFONI). No massive BHs …

Unconventional Pairing Symmetry Of Interacting Dirac Fermions On A Π -Flux Lattice, Huaiming Guo, Ehsan Khatami, Yao Wang, Thomas Devereaux, Rajiv Singh, Richard Scalettar
Faculty Publications
The pairing symmetry of interacting Dirac fermions on the π-flux lattice is studied with the determinant quantum Monte Carlo and numerical linked-cluster expansion methods. The s∗- (i.e., extended s-) and d-wave pairing symmetries, which are distinct in the conventional square lattice, are degenerate under the Landau gauge. We demonstrate that the dominant pairing channel at strong interactions is an unconventional ds∗-wave phase consisting of alternating stripes of s∗- and d-wave phases. A complementary mean-field analysis shows that while the s∗- and d-wave symmetries individually have nodes in the energy spectrum, the ds∗ channel is fully gapped. The results represent a …

Evaluating And Supporting Teacher Practice Of Formative Assessment: Assessing Posing, Pausing, And Probing Moves, Carrie Holmberg, Brent Duckor
Faculty Publications
Decades of research supports that teacher engagement in formative assessment (FA) can powerfully impact student learning outcomes (Black & Wiliam, 1998; Hattie, 2009, 2012). Yet less is known about teacher development of FA skills on a continuum of practice. This empirical study designed, piloted, and examined test content validity of a performance-based assessment of teachers’ FA practice related to questioning “moves” in the context of six multilingual high needs middle school mathematics classrooms. Qualitative comparative analysis of triangulated evidence of teachers’ planning for, enacting, and reflecting on posing, pausing, and probing “moves” found differences among teachers’ probing in particular, related …

Unpacking Teacher Practice Through A Moves-Based Formative Assessment Framework Using Video-Based Cycles Of Inquiry, Brent Duckor, Carrie Holmberg
Faculty Publications
Research has shown for over a decade that teachers who engage in formative assessment (FA) practices may have the most powerful impact on student learning (Black & Wiliam, 1998; Hattie, 2012). Yet less is known about the development of teachers’ knowledge and use of formative assessment as they plan, enact, and reflect on their questioning practices. Our qualitative case study focuses on how in-service middle school math teachers take up three specific moves (Author A, 2014) associated with formative assessment practice as as part of a video-based cycle of inquiry project. The study found focusing participants’ planning and reflection through …

Wearable technology allows users to monitor their activity and pursue a healthy lifestyle through the use of embedded sensors. Such wearables usually connect to a mobile application that allows them to set their profile and keep track of their goals. However, due to the relatively “high maintenance” of such applications, where a significant amount of user feedback is expected, users who are very busy, or not as self-motivated, stop using them after a while. It has been shown that accountability improves commitment to an exercise routine. In this work, we present the PRO-Fit framework, a personalized fitness assistant aiming at …

Cloud computing is an environment where virtual resources are shared among the many users over network. A user of Cloud services is billed according to pay-per-use model associated with this environment. To keep this bill to a minimum, efficient resource allocation is of great importance. To handle the many requests sent to Cloud by the clients, the tasks need to be processed according to the SLAs defined by the client. The increase in the usage of Cloud services on a daily basis has introduced delays in the transmission of requests. These delays can cause clients to wait for the response …

Most experiments conducted in the early 1900s with Electroencephalography (EEG) [10] devices explored mental illness of the participants. Historically, EEG has had specific applications to diagnose sleep disorder, epilepsy, coma and brain death. Today, EEG devices are used extensively for research purposes [10], especially in the field of neuroscience. Traditionally, most experiments included a human participant wherein an EEG device was connected to the subject’s forehead to detect electrical impulses indicating different brainwaves. Each brainwave implied a different emotional state of mind. Past experiments [2] [3] [4] then used the brainwave signals as input to build audio/visual art to aid …

Music is a complicated form of communication, where creators and culture communicate and expose their individuality. After music digitalization took place, recommendation systems and other online services have become indispensable in the field of Music Information Retrieval (MIR). To build these systems and recommend the right choice of song to the user, classification of songs is required. In this paper, we propose an approach for finding similarity between music based on mid-level attributes like pitch, midi value corresponding to pitch, interval, contour and duration and applying text based classification techniques. Our system predicts jazz, metal and ragtime for western music. …

Sensitive documents are usually shredded into strips before discarding them. Shredders are used to cut the pages of a document into thin strips of uniform thickness. Each shredded piece in the collection bin could belong to any of the pages in a document. The task of document reconstruction involves two steps: Identifying the page to which each shred belongs and rearranging the shreds within the page to their original position. The difficulty of the reconstruction process depends on the thickness of the shred and type of cut (horizontal or vertical). The thickness of the shred is directly proportional to the …

Micro-Expression Recognition Using Spatiotemporal Texture Map And Motion Magnification, Shashank Shivaji Pawar
Master's Projects
Micro-expressions are short-lived, rapid facial expressions that are exhibited by individuals when they are in high stakes situations. Studying these micro-expressions is important as these cannot be modified by an individual and hence offer us a peek into what the individual is actually feeling and thinking as opposed to what he/she is trying to portray. The spotting and recognition of micro-expressions has applications in the fields of criminal investigation, psychotherapy, education etc. However due to micro-expressions’ short-lived and rapid nature; spotting, recognizing and classifying them is a major challenge. In this paper, we design a hybrid approach for spotting and …

Online job boards have become a major platform for technical talent procurement and job search. These job portals have given rise to challenging matching and search problems. The core matching or search happens between technical skills of the job requirements and the candidate's profile or keywords. The extensive list of technical skills and its polyonymous nature makes it less effective to perform a direct keyword matching. This results in substandard job matching or search results which misses out a closely matching candidate on account of it not having the exact skills. It is important to use a semantic similarity measure …

Distinguishing Earthquakes And Noise Using Random Forest Algorithm, Nishita Narvekar
Master's Projects
Earthquakes are a major cause of life and property destruction. It is known that earthquakes radiate energy in the form of surface and body seismic waves. P-wave and S-waves are types of body waves. Both waves can be detected and recorded at an earthquake station. These waves can be analyzed to detect earthquakes. Most of the earthquake prediction techniques today are a combination of geophysics and signal processing, which are relatively complex. Machine learning can be used to learn the behavior of seismic waves and help in early detection. Machine learning can also be employed to process massive amounts of …

Approaches To Shared State In Concurrent Programs, Sidharth Mishra
Master's Projects
We are in the multicore machine era, but our programs have yet to utilize the increased computing power offered by these machines. At present, lock-based multithreaded programming is the most common programming model used for writing concurrent programs. However, due to the nuances of shared state (and memory) in multithreaded programs and the cognitive load introduced due to locks, concurrent programming remains difficult. One way to deal with shared state in concurrent programs is to get rid of it altogether and use message passing. The other way would be to isolate shared state and store it in a state store, …

On a very high level, a movie recommendation system is one which uses data about the user, data about the movie and the ratings given by a user in order to generate predictions for the movies that the user will like. This prediction is further presented to the user as a recommendation. For example, Netflix uses a recommendation system to predict movies and generate favorable recommendations for users based on their profiles and the profiles of users similar to them. In user-based collaborative filtering algorithm, the movies rated highly by the similar users of a particular user are considered as …

Joint Computation Offloading And Prioritized Scheduling In Mobile Edge Computing, Lingfang Gao
Master's Projects
With the rapid development of smart phones, enormous amounts of data are generated and usually require intensive and real-time computation. Nevertheless, quality of service (QoS) is hardly to be met due to the tension between resourcelimited (battery, CPU power) devices and computation-intensive applications. Mobileedge computing (MEC) emerging as a promising technique can be used to copy with stringent requirements from mobile applications. By offloading computationally intensive workloads to edge server and applying efficient task scheduling, energy cost of mobiles could be significantly reduced and therefore greatly improve QoS, e.g., latency. This paper proposes a joint computation offloading and prioritized task …
Pe Header Analysis For Malware Detection, Samuel Kim
Pe Header Analysis For Malware Detection, Samuel Kim
Master's Projects
Recent research indicates that effective malware detection can be implemented based on analyzing portable executable (PE) file headers. Such research typically relies on prior knowledge of the header to extract relevant features. However, it is also possible to consider the entire header as a whole, and use this directly to determine whether the file is malware. In this research, we collect a large and diverse malware data set. We then analyze the effectiveness of various machine learning techniques based on PE headers to classify the malware samples. We compare the accuracy and efficiency of each technique considered.
