The Importance Of Solvent Effects On The Mechanism Of The Pfeiffer Effect, Jamie Lunkley, Ngoc Nguyen, Kristina Tuminaro, Dana Margittai, Gilles Muller Aug 2018

The Importance Of Solvent Effects On The Mechanism Of The Pfeiffer Effect, Jamie Lunkley, Ngoc Nguyen, Kristina Tuminaro, Dana Margittai, Gilles Muller

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

The Pfeiffer effect is observed when an optically active compound such as an amino acid is introduced to a solution containing a labile racemic metal complex, and an equilibrium shift is obtained. The “perturbation” results in an excess of one enantiomer over the other. The shift is a result of a preferential outer sphere interaction between the introduced chiral species and one enantiomeric form (Λ or ∆) of a labile metal complex. Speculations regarding the mechanism of the Pfeiffer effect have attributed observations to a singular factor such as pH, solvent polarity, or numerous other intermolecular interactions. Through the use …

Faculty Publications

We investigate the dark matter density profile of the massive elliptical galaxy, NGC 1407, by constructing spherically symmetric Jeans models of its field star and globular cluster systems. Two major challenges in such models are the degeneracy between the stellar mass and the dark matter halo profiles, and the degeneracy between the orbital anisotropy of the tracer population and the total mass causing the observed motions. We address the first issue by using new measurements of the mass-to-light ratio profile from stellar population constraints that include a radially varying initial mass function. To mitigate the mass–anisotropy degeneracy, we make use …

A Deficit Of Dark Matter From Jeans Modeling Of The Ultra-Diffuse Galaxy Ngc 1052-Df2, Asher Wasserman, Aaron Romanowsky, Jean Brodie, Pieter Van Dokkum, Charlie Conroy, Roberto Abraham, Yotam Cohen, Shany Danieli

Faculty Publications

The discovery of the ultra-diffuse galaxy NGC 1052-DF2 and its peculiar population of star clusters has raised new questions about the connections between galaxies and dark matter (DM) halos at the extremes of galaxy formation. In light of debates over the measured velocity dispersion of its star clusters and the associated mass estimate, we constrain mass models of DF2 using its observed kinematics with a range of priors on the halo mass. Models in which the galaxy obeys a standard stellar-halo mass relation are in tension with the data and also require a large central density core. Better fits are …

The Multimodal Interactional Work Of Having Wonderful Ideas, Benedikt Harrer Aug 2018

The Multimodal Interactional Work Of Having Wonderful Ideas, Benedikt Harrer

Faculty Publications

Learning physics is socially organized through interactions with peers and more competent others. Instructors' and peers' assessment of and responsiveness to learners' ideas in the moment is critical for the collaborative construction of knowledge in physics. However, we still know little about how instructors and learners negotiate the value and productiveness of ideas. While to an outsider, some of the ideas physics learners discuss do not seem immediately valuable or productive for the problem being solved, Duckworth encourages us to pursue an 'insider's view' on how a learner experiences their ideas. Building on Duckworth, I pursue an 'insider's view' to …

Fluctuating Hydrodynamics Of Reactive Liquid Mixtures, Changho Kim, Andy. Nonaka, John Bell, Alejandro Garcia, Aleksandar Donev Aug 2018

Fluctuating Hydrodynamics Of Reactive Liquid Mixtures, Changho Kim, Andy. Nonaka, John Bell, Alejandro Garcia, Aleksandar Donev

Faculty Publications

Fluctuating hydrodynamics (FHD) provides a framework for modeling microscopic fluctuations in a manner consistent with statistical mechanics and nonequilibrium thermodynamics. This paper presents an FHD formulation for isothermal reactive incompressible liquid mixtures with stochastic chemistry. Fluctuating multispecies mass diffusion is formulated using a Maxwell–Stefan description without assuming a dilute solution, and momentum dynamics is described by a stochastic Navier–Stokes equation for the fluid velocity. We consider a thermodynamically consistent generalization for the law of mass action for non-dilute mixtures and use it in the chemical master equation (CME) to model reactions as a Poisson process. The FHD approach provides remarkable …

Externalizing The Core Principles Of The Departmental Action Team (Dat) Model, Joel Corbo, Gina Quan, Karen Falkenberg, Christopher Geanious, Courtney Ngai, Mary Pilgrim, Daniel Reinholz, Sarah Wise

Faculty Publications

Departmental Action Teams (DATs) are departmentally-based working groups of faculty, students, and staffaimed at achieving sustained departmental change related to undergraduate education. DATs have been conceptualized and are facilitated by members of our project team based on a set of Core Principles. These principles serve both as guides in the design of DATs and targets for the kinds of culture we aspire to create through our facilitation. In this paper, we describe our Core Principles, including theoretical underpinnings and a brief implementation example for each. We argue that articulating principles is a critical component of externalizing acomplex change effort and …

Research On University Faculty Member's Reasoning About How Departments Change, Gina Quan, Joel Corbo, Courtney Ngai, Daniel Reinholz, Mary Pilgrim

Faculty Publications

Research on institutional change says that effective change agents are able to flexibly reason with multiple models for change, depending on their local context and their goals. However, little is known about what it looks like for individuals to draw on and reason with different change models in-the-moment. Within interviews, we invited STEM faculty to discuss specific changes in their department and the process of change in general. This work is part of an ongoing study to understand how to support departmental change through Departmental Action Teams (DATs).  Our preliminary analyses suggest that faculty's ideas about change are highly varied …

Pondering Zeros: Uncovering Hidden Inequities Within A Decade Of Grades, Cassandra Paul Aug 2018

Pondering Zeros: Uncovering Hidden Inequities Within A Decade Of Grades, Cassandra Paul

Faculty Publications

When assessing student work, graders will often find that some students will leave one or more problems blank on assessments. Since there is no work shown, the grader has no means to evaluate the student's understanding of a particular problem, and thus awards zero points. This practice punishes the student behavior of leaving a problem blank, but this zero is not necessarily an accurate assessment of student understanding of a particular topic. While some might argue that this grading practice is "fair" in that students know that they can't receive points for answers they don't submit, we share evidence that …

Faculty Publications

The strong chromatic index of a graph G, denoted χ′s(G), is the least number of colors needed to edge-color G so that edges at distance at most two receive distinct colors. The strong list chromatic index, denoted χ′s,ℓ(G), is the least integer k such that if arbitrary lists of size k are assigned to each edge then G can be edge-colored from those lists where edges at distance at most two receive distinct colors. We use the discharging method, the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz, and computation to show that if G is a subcubic planar graph with girth(G)≥41 then χ′s,ℓ(G)≤5, answering a question …

Dialetheism, Paradox, And Nāgārjuna’S Way Of Thinking, Richard H. Jones Jul 2018

Dialetheism, Paradox, And Nāgārjuna’S Way Of Thinking, Richard H. Jones

Comparative Philosophy

Nāgārjuna’s doctrine of emptiness, his ideas on “two truths” and language, and his general method of arguing are presented clearly by him and can be stated without paradox. That the dialetheists today can restate his beliefs in paradoxical ways does not mean that Nāgārjuna argued that way; in fact, their restatements misrepresent and undercut his arguments.

The origin of ultracompact dwarfs (UCDs), a class of compact stellar systems discovered two decades ago, still remains a matter of debate. Recent discoveries of central supermassive black holes in UCDs likely inherited from their massive progenitor galaxies provide support for the tidal stripping hypothesis. At the same time, on statistical grounds, some massive UCDs might be representatives of the high luminosity tail of the globular cluster luminosity function. Here we present a detection of a 3.3+1.4−1.2×106M⊙ black hole (1σ uncertainty) in the centre of the UCD3 galaxy in the Fornax cluster, which corresponds to 4 per cent of its …

Hydraulic Sheet Resistance In Paper-Based Porous Media, Stefan Myles Doser Jun 2018

Hydraulic Sheet Resistance In Paper-Based Porous Media, Stefan Myles Doser

Master's Theses

This work investigates the special case of in-plane fluid flow of a Newtonian incompressible fluid across a thin paper-based porous medium at very low Reynolds numbers (Re ≪ 1). Fluid transport with these characteristics is used in emerging devices such as microscale paperbased analytical devices (μPADs). The mathematical similarity between Darcy’s law and Ohm’s law is considered, and hydraulic equivalents of current, voltage and resistance are determined to propose hydraulic sheet resistance. Darcy flow is predicted under these conditions and tested by experiment at two flow rates of 5 μL/min and 10 μL/min. A device was designed and fabricated to …
