A Place For Ancient Philosophy In Axial Age Historiography, John R. Shook Aug 2025

A Place For Ancient Philosophy In Axial Age Historiography, John R. Shook

Comparative Philosophy

Long-standing debates over historiographical approaches to the Axial Age have distracted the history of philosophy from its own disciplined inquiry into the breadth and depth of ancient thought beyond the Greeks. The philosopher Karl Jaspers offered a vista for seeing commonalities among ancient innovations and discerning continuities along history to modern times. That dual agenda divided Axial historiography with the question of whether axiality reflects creativities of ancient systems or have modern reflections created images of axiality. A singular chronology for humanity encourages a mode of philosophical history open to providential designs, epochal turns, spiritual evolutions, psychological leaps, or cognitive …

The Impact Of Early Life Experiences On Math Confidence, Nhu X. Hin Aug 2025

The Impact Of Early Life Experiences On Math Confidence, Nhu X. Hin

Master's Theses

Students form beliefs about their academic abilities through a combination of emotional experiences and early learning environments. While prior research has documented how math anxiety can undermine performance and how early experiences with math-typed activities can foster positive attitudes, less is known about how these factors collectively influence students’ math confidence. The present study investigates how math anxiety, engagement in childhood math-typed activities, and perceived support for math-related learning contribute to college students’ confidence in their math abilities. Participants (N = 102) completed self-report measures assessing each of these constructs. A multiple regression analysis revealed that the three predictors collectively …

Vertiport Location Selection And Optimization For Urban Air Mobility In Complex Urban Scenes, Yannan Lu, Weili Zeng, Wenbin Wei, Weiwei Wu, Hao Jiang

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Vertiports, as dedicated facilities for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, are essential to ensure the efficiency and sustainability of Urban Air Mobility (UAM). However, UAM infrastructure site selection has become increasingly complex due to limited land availability, complex spatial conditions, and the need to balance multiple objectives. Focusing on passenger-carrying UAM operations, this study proposes a systematic framework for vertiport site selection. First, key factors are classified into high, medium, and low levels across the safety, economic, and social dimensions, forming a modular evaluation system. A GIS-based spatial screening process is developed to identify potential vertiport locations. Subsequently, …

Handling Skewness And Directional Tails In Model-Based Clustering, Cristina Tortora, Antonio Punzo, Brian C. Franczak Aug 2025

Handling Skewness And Directional Tails In Model-Based Clustering, Cristina Tortora, Antonio Punzo, Brian C. Franczak

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Model-based clustering is a powerful approach used in data analysis to unveil underlying patterns or groups within a data set. However, when applied to clusters that exhibit skewness, heavy tails, or both, the classification of data points becomes more challenging. In this study, we introduce two models considering two component-wise transformations of the observed data within a mixture of multiple scaled contaminated normal (MSCN) distributions. MSCN distributions are designed to enable a different tail behavior in each dimension and directional outlier detection in the direction of the principal components. Using the transformed MSCN distributions as components of a mixture, we …

Analyzing Sports Motion Using Calculus, Joshua Vidal, Maryam Khazaei Pool Aug 2025

Analyzing Sports Motion Using Calculus, Joshua Vidal, Maryam Khazaei Pool

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Calculus helps analyze sports motion by modeling a ball's vertical path as a quadratic fuction, capturing initial velocity, gravity, and height. Differentiating this function reveals velocity and acceleration, key to finding peak height, time to peak, and airtime. Using Python, we can accurately calculate and visualize these motions. Linear algebra further connects player skills like strength, technique, and accuracy to kick distance, enabling performance prediction and comparision.

Data Analysis & Ml: Analyzing Student Performance Data, Mingmar Sherpa, Maryam Khazaei Pool

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Multiple factors influence student performance, including demographics, institutional support, study habits, and prior academic results. While educational data mining (EDM) research has primarily examined online learning, traditional classroom settings remain understudied. Early performance indicators strongly predict final outcomes, making timely intervention crucial. However, current models predict more acurately during courses than before they begin, revealing a need for better pre-course forecasting.

How Effective Are Engineered And Non-Engineered Riparian Forest Restoration Projects In Providing Salmonid-Quality Habitat In The San Francisco Bay Area?, Alexander Ivanov

Master's Theses

Streams and their riparian zones in the San Francisco Bay Area have been degraded, severely harming salmonid populations in the region. Ecological restoration is a common approach to return stream function. Such restoration projects vary widely in intensity, from low-impact vegetation removal/planting to highly engineered projects involving structures and grading. This research investigated the effectiveness of streams restored using engineered versus non-engineered solutions in supporting salmonid habitat viability in San Francisco Bay Area streams. Fourteen streams, seven from each of the two types of restoration, were sampled in the wet and dry season in 2024, three times each season. Data …

Quantization On Graph Neural Networks For Image Classification, Rithik Reddy Katpally Jul 2025

Quantization On Graph Neural Networks For Image Classification, Rithik Reddy Katpally

Master's Theses

Quantization has become a key approach for reducing storage and computational demands of deep neural networks while maintaining high accuracy. Although 8-bit quantization is well-established for convolutional architectures such as ResNet50 and MobileNetV2, its application to graph-based vision models remains underexplored. In this work, we extend quantization-aware training to Vision Graph Neural Networks (ViGs) and conduct comparisons with quantized CNNs on the CIFAR-100 dataset. To ensure parity, all models have same training hyperparameters such as learning rate, batch size, optimizer, number of epochs. We used numerous techniques to preserve performance for low-bit precision. First, Pauta Quantization clips activation outliers based …

Interactions Between A High Intensity Wildfire And An Atmopsheric Hydraulic Jump In The Case Of The 2023 Lahaina Fire, Clifford Dw Ehrke Jul 2025

Interactions Between A High Intensity Wildfire And An Atmopsheric Hydraulic Jump In The Case Of The 2023 Lahaina Fire, Clifford Dw Ehrke

Master's Theses

On 8 August 2023, a grass fire that started in the city of Lahaina, Hawai’i, grew into the deadliest wildfire in the United States since 1918. This wildfire offers a unique opportunity to explore the impact of high heat output on an atmospheric hydraulic jump and a downslope wind event. We conducted two WRF-SFIRE simulations to investigate these effects: one incorporating fire–atmosphere feedback and the other without it. We compare these WRF-SFIRE simulations to all available data regarding the fire event, including high resolution satellite data, weather station data from other parts of Maui and the Hawaiian Archipelago, and official …

Using Facial Recognition For Selective Pose Detection, William J. Parker Jul 2025

Using Facial Recognition For Selective Pose Detection, William J. Parker

Master's Theses

Pose detection involves locating and identifying key body points for all individuals within a frame. This enables the ability to convert the pose into a digital format, which can then be recorded and analyzed for a variety of purposes. Advancements in the field have already opened applications in areas such as digital fitness coaches, fall detection, and virtual reality. Existing approaches primarily focus on tracking all detected individuals, which limits the practical applications when attempting to analyze a single or specific subject when there are other people in frame. Previous work has discussed integrating identification, but these approaches use identification …

Euler’S Formula For General Graph Embeddings, Doug Bauer, Linda Lesniak, Edward Schmeichel Jul 2025

Euler’S Formula For General Graph Embeddings, Doug Bauer, Linda Lesniak, Edward Schmeichel

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Consider an embedding of a graph G(v,e) with v≥1 vertices and e≥0 edges into a closed surface s, with r resulting regions. If G is connected and every region is a 2-cell (a so-called 2-cell embedding), Euler’s formula is the relation v−e+r=χ(s), where χ(s) denotes the Euler characteristic of s. Here we give a generalization of Euler’s formula which applies to any embedding (2-cell or not) of any graph (connected or not) into any surface (orientable or not), with several interesting corollaries. One rather striking corollary is the converse of Euler’s formula itself: If an embedding of a graph G(v,e) …

Navigating Multiple Virtual Teams: How Variety In Communication Rules Affects Knowledge Sharing, Valerio Incerti, Kelly J. Fadel, Elisa Mattarelli, Fabiola Bertolotti, Francesca Bellesia, Paula Ungureanu, Katherine M. Chudoba

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

In contemporary workplaces, individuals are often members of more than one virtual team at a time, that is, they experience multiple virtual team membership (MVTM), and they are subjected to context variety due to different rules across their teams. The aim of this paper is to understand the relationship between context variety related to communication rules and knowledge sharing in situations of MVTM. We propose that context variety and switching between teams negatively affect the individual capability to acquire and provide knowledge resources in a team, due in part to an increased perception of role overload. Through an experimental study, …

On Two-Generator Subgroups Of Mapping Torus Groups, Naomi Andrew, Edgar Bering Iv, Ilya Kapovich, Stefano Vidussi, Peter Shalen

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

We prove that if (Formula presented.) is the mapping torus group of an injective endomorphism (Formula presented.) of a free group (Formula presented.) (of possibly infinite rank), then every two-generator subgroup (Formula presented.) of (Formula presented.) is either free or a (finitary) sub-mapping torus. As an application we show that if (Formula presented.) is a fully irreducible atoroidal automorphism, then every two-generator subgroup of (Formula presented.) is either free or has finite index in (Formula presented.).

A Simple Model Of Spiral Galaxies From Geometric Optics, Bogdan Szafraniec, James N. Blake Jul 2025

A Simple Model Of Spiral Galaxies From Geometric Optics, Bogdan Szafraniec, James N. Blake

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

We propose a simple model of spiral galaxies based on the interference of gravitational waves. The interference is deduced from geometric optics analysis of the refractive index profiles that mimic the behavior of gravitational potentials −1/r and r2. We analyze the refractive index profiles, n(r)2 = a + b/r and n(r)2 = a + br2, because they are realistically shaped and yield closed form solutions. The two profiles yield similar physical results, showing that the physical interpretation is not dependent on the exact details of the profile. The first profile yields trajectories that can …

The Impact Of Artificial Intelligence On Ecojustice And Ethics, Vishnu S. Pendyala Jun 2025

The Impact Of Artificial Intelligence On Ecojustice And Ethics, Vishnu S. Pendyala

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has attained human-level performance in tasks like text summarization, machine translation, and code generation while handling multimodal data. Despite these advances, AI poses challenges such as generating false or biased outputs, causing discrimination, and exhibiting opaque decision-making processes that hinder bias mitigation. Additionally, training large language models (LLMs) for AI consumes substantial energy and can enable autonomous warfare, posing a threat to eco-justice, and raising sustainability concerns. Their ability to create realistic content poses the risk of misuse and perpetuating misinformation. This article addresses these ethical issues and presents solutions through regulation and technology, with examples of …

Large Language Models For Quantitative Analysis Of Statutory Stringency And Its Correlation With Sexual Assault Crime Rates, Samhita Konduri, Vishnu S. Pendyala Jun 2025

Large Language Models For Quantitative Analysis Of Statutory Stringency And Its Correlation With Sexual Assault Crime Rates, Samhita Konduri, Vishnu S. Pendyala

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Sexual assault (SA) crimes are among the most important issues for our current society to solve, with these crimes in particular having long-term consequences on victims and their communities. To solve this issue, one approach is to make laws and penalties for these crimes stricter. However, there have not been any studies on the relationship between stricter penalties and lower crime rates, especially about SA crimes, in a quantitative manner. The biggest barrier to conducting a quantitative study on the strictness of laws and statutes is the lack of a standardized measure of how strict a legal text is. This …

Influence Of Plasma Screening On High-Density Inverse Bremsstrahlung Absorption, D. Turnbull, R. K. Follett, M. Sherlock, D. J. Strozzi, J. Katz, D. Cao, N. R. Shaffer, K. Aytekin, D. H. Edgell, L. Stanton, D. H. Froula

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

A spherical-implosion platform diagnosed with the "beamlets"scattered-light detector provides high sensitivity to the impact of plasma screening on inverse bremsstrahlung absorption. Contrary to the more restrictive screening length suggested previously [D. Turnbull et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 130, 145103 (2023)0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.130.145103; D. Turnbull et al., Phys. Plasmas 31, 063304 (2024)1070-664X10.1063/5.0203446], the beamlets data indicate that the electron-only Debye length is the relevant screening length for high-density inverse bremsstrahlung absorption. Using the updated absorption model, we simulate the OMEGA direct-drive inertial confinement fusion implosion database and show that bang times are well reproduced without any ad hoc multipliers.
