Sidestepping Equity? A Case Study On The Provision And Quality Of Sidewalks In Fremont, California, Joel Manning
Master's Projects
An overview of the history and scope of pedestrian policy at the federal, state, regional, and local levels followed by an investigation into existing conditions in the San Francisco Bay Area suburb of Fremont, California. Findings and possible implications for the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and the City of Fremont are discussed and several modest policy recommendations are made.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) pose a significant threat to human and marine organism health, and negatively impact coastal economies around the world. An improved understanding of HAB formation and transport is required to improve forecasting skill. A realistic numerical simulation of the US Pacific Northwest region is used to investigate transport pathways from known HAB formation hot spots, specifically for Pseudo-nitzschia (Pn), to the coast. We show that transport pathways are seasonal, with transport to the Washington (WA) coast from a northern source (the Juan de Fuca Eddy) during the summer/fall upwelling season and from a southern source (Heceta Bank) …

Library chain of operation is measured in this availability study. The function of acquisition, cataloging, circulation, library system and procedure is examined by a simulated search performed by librarian and library staff. A number of 100 titles is randomly searched in OPAC and effort to search initiated and findings are examined. The score shows the probability of availability of patrons leaving the library with desired book in hand. Suggestions are given at the end of article for correction and improvement purposes

The Use Of Electronic Journal Articles By Academics At Mzuzu University, Malawi., Lizzie Malemia
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The use of information technology for scholarly publication is now commonplace all over the world. Academic communities in Africa are part of this transformation. The purpose of this study was to investigate academics’ use of scholarly electronic journal articles at Mzuzu University and assess the factors influencing their behaviour. Data collection instruments used for the study were the use of a questionnaire to the academics, interview with Deans of Faculties and follow up e-survey to some academics at Mzuzu University. The findings revealed that most academics had general knowledge of the electronic journals and this did not vary with education. …

Anger is a common problem among veterans and has been associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study aimed to improve understanding of how anger and PTSD co-occur by examining gender differences and differences by whether the triggering traumatic event is deployment-related vs. civilian-related in current service members. A representative cohort of Reserve and National Guard service personnel (n = 1293) were interviewed to assess for deployment- or civilian-related traumas, PTSD, and anger. The prevalence of self-reported anger problems was estimated among male (n = 1036) and female (n = 257) service members. Log Poisson regression models with robust standard …

BackgroundReporting ototoxicity is frequently complicated by use of various ototoxicity criteria. The International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP) ototoxicity grading scale was recently proposed for standardized use in reporting hearing loss outcomes across institutions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the concordance between the Chang and SIOP ototoxicity grading scales. Differences between the two scales were identified and the implications these differences may have in the clinical setting were discussed.ProceduresAudiological evaluations were reviewed for 379 patients with newly diagnosed medulloblastoma (ages 3–21 years). Each patient was enrolled on one of two St. Jude clinical protocols that included craniospinal …

Improving Smart Grid Security Using Merkle Trees, Melesio Calderón Muñoz
Master's Projects
Abstract—Presently nations worldwide are starting to convert their aging electrical power infrastructures into modern, dynamic power grids. Smart Grid offers much in the way of efficiencies and robustness to the electrical power grid, however its heavy reliance on communication networks will leave it more vulnerable to attack than present day grids. This paper looks at the threat to public key cryptography systems from a fully realized quantum computer and how this could impact the Smart Grid. We argue for the use of Merkle Trees in place of public key cryptography for authentication of devices in wireless mesh networks that are …

The Naïve Bayes Model is a special case of Bayesian networks with strong independence assumptions. It is typically used for classification problems. The Naïve Bayes model is trained using the given data to estimate the parameters necessary for classification. This model of classification is very popular since it is simple yet efficient and accurate. While the Naïve Bayes model is considered accurate on most of the problem instances, there is a set of problems for which the Naïve Bayes does not give accurate results when compared to other classifiers such as the decision tree algorithms. One reason for it could …
Active Travel Co-Benefits Of Travel Demand Management Policies That Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Mti Report 12-12, Caroline Rodier, Richard W. Lee, Brandon Haydu, Nicholas J. Linesch
Active Travel Co-Benefits Of Travel Demand Management Policies That Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Mti Report 12-12, Caroline Rodier, Richard W. Lee, Brandon Haydu, Nicholas J. Linesch
Mineta Transportation Institute
There is increasing evidence that improved health outcomes may be significant co-benefits of land use plans and transport policies that increase active transport (or walking and biking for purposeful travel) and reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) from vehicle miles traveled (VMT). A greater understanding of these benefits may broaden the constituency for regional planning that supports local and national GHG reduction goals. In this study, California’s activity-based travel demand model (ABM) is applied to (1) demonstrate how this new generation of travel models can be used to produce the active travel data (age and sex distributions) required by comparative risk …

Building Consensus And Partnerships For Implementing The Map-21 Section 5310 Program In California, Mti Report Wp 12-25, Christopher Ferrell, Bruce Appleyard
Mineta Transportation Institute
The Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21)—the legislation that currently provides funding for federal transportation—allows metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) or eligible large, urbanized area (UZA) agencies to assume administrative responsibility for Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Section 5310—the Enhanced Mobility of Seniors and Individuals with Disabilities grant program. Caltrans engaged Mineta Transportation Institute (MTI) to conduct research and facilitate a dialogue with the State’s 5310 stakeholders. The MTI team conducted interviews with key stakeholders and Caltrans staff and performed in-depth quantitative analysis of the existing administrative activities of the 5310 program. This research was followed by two …
