Collaborative Online Instruction: A Care Ethics Perspective, Colette Rabin, Grinell Smith Apr 2016

Collaborative Online Instruction: A Care Ethics Perspective, Colette Rabin, Grinell Smith

Faculty Publications

Isolation is often a problem in online courses. In this qualitative study, we used care ethics perspectives to design the social organization of an online course to foster the development of robust collaborative professional relationships. Redesign focused on two areas. First, we centered all assignments on complex real-world problems. Second, we used dialogic instructor-assisted self-assessment. We found that students built professional relationships through dialogue, and simultaneously produced high-quality work. The significance of this work lies in its potential to help other instructors address the challenge of helping teachers adopt collaboration as a professional disposition.

Intraspinal Drug Delivery Reservoir Refill Procedure By Non-Physician Clinicians: A Nation-Wide Survey Of Training, Pocket Fill Experience, And Life-Long Learning Behaviors, Gail Mcglothlen

Doctoral Projects

Intraspinal drug delivery (IDD) is a safe and efficacious method used to deliver medications for the treatment of chronic neurologic disease that requires periodic reservoir refills that can place patients at risk for a rare, accidental but potentially life-threatening, pocket fill. In the United States (US), non-physician clinicians perform this procedure. This study reports the results of a nationwide survey completed by 65 non-physician clinicians, obtained through social media, who performed the reservoir refill procedure. The results of the survey showed no standardized training was used, lack of attention to existing clinical practice guidelines in the training given, lack of …

Exploring The Needs And Preferences For A Diabetes Self-Management Program In Hispanics Living In The Central Valley Of California, Emily Lane Kimble

Doctoral Projects

Diabetes mellitus type 2 is an ever increasing threat to the health of people living in the United States, especially those of Hispanic ethnicity. This ethnic group is disproportionately afflicted with the chronic condition and is also more likely than non-Hispanic whites to suffer from serious complications of diabetes. This project examines this growing problem among Hispanics living in the Central Valley of California by exploring how best to structure diabetes self-management education in a network of community health centers.

The Social Cognitive Theory provides a theoretical basis for investigation into motivation for diabetes self-management. This needs assessment specifically explored …

Constructivist Learning Strategies In A Nurse Residency Program, Floyd M. Hammon Iii

Doctoral Projects

Nurses are knowledge workers in technologically advanced social environments providing care to patients with complex biopsychosocial health care needs. The Nurse Residency Program (NRP) is a transition to practice program designed to facilitate the professional socialization of the newly licensed registered nurse (NLRN) with the goal of developing competency in providing safe and quality patient-centered care. Constructivist learning strategies are an instructional framework that promotes social facilitated self-directed learning. The purpose of the project is to determine if using constructivist learning strategies are an effective learning method in a NRP as measured by the Casey-Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Survey.

The Effectiveness Of California Assembly Bill 2109: Personal Belief Exemptions For Kindergarten Immunizations, Lilli Shizuka Goishi-Bessey Apr 2016

The Effectiveness Of California Assembly Bill 2109: Personal Belief Exemptions For Kindergarten Immunizations, Lilli Shizuka Goishi-Bessey

Doctoral Projects

The numbers of vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs) in the United States has declined with the development, administration, and effectiveness of vaccines during the 1970s and 1980s. As the eminent threat of VPDs to the public began to wane, parents started questioning the safety and necessity of vaccines. When parents were given the option of selecting personal belief exemption (PBE) waivers for state mandated immunizations for their incoming kindergarten children, an increase in PBEs and the number of VPD outbreaks began to occur. To counter the growing trend of PBEs, and to prevent outbreaks of VPDs in school settings and communities, …

A Phenomenological Assessment Of Factors That Affect Medication Adherence Among Hypertensive Nigerian Immigrants, Beulah Iroegbu

Doctoral Projects

This qualitative study explored the perceptions that affect medication adherence among hypertensive Nigerian immigrants in Sacramento, California. The research questions focused on factors that influenced the adherence to hypertension medication; specifically, how the sample population explained the cause of hypertension and whether culture and religion impacted the cause and management of hypertension. A phenomenological approach was used to understand perceptions about medication adherence. A predefined group of 9 acted as a purposive sample and was given semi-structured individual interviews. Qualitative data analysis of the interviews was performed using Colaizzi's 7-step method. Results from the study found the cause of hypertension …

International Lessons For Promoting Transit Connections To High-Speed Rail Systems, Stan Feinsod, Eduardo Romo Urroz, Peter J. Haas, James Griffith

Mineta Transportation Institute

As the California High-Speed Rail (HSR) project becomes reality, many communities involved in, or affected by, the California HSR project have considered how to connect the new HSR passenger services to local urban transportation systems – such as bus and light rail systems – and how they can take advantage of HSR accessibility and speed throughout the state. European and other overseas systems have decades of experience in forging connections between HSR and various transportation options. This study examines international HSR stations and identifies patterns in transit connections associated with stations on the basis of size, population levels, and other …

The Promise Of An Energy Tracker Curriculum For Promoting Home-School Connections And Youth Agency In Climate Action, Elizabeth M. Walsh, Derek Jenkins, Eugene Cordero

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Formal classroom learning experiences that support sustainable behaviors outside the classroom necessarily must bridge students’ home and school lives, as knowledge and practice learned in the classroom is implemented outside of school. To this end, we study the impact of the Green Ninja Energy Tracker curriculum, which uses students’ home energy data in the classroom to promote engagement in climate change and conservation behaviors. Data is drawn from class observations, a focus group, and pre- and post- surveys of a pilot implementation of this curriculum in a diverse 12th-grade Earth Science classroom at an alternative school. We investigate what factors …

Religiosity As A Protective Factor For Hazardous Drinking And Drug Use Among Sexual Minority And Heterosexual Women: Findings From The National Alcohol Survey, Laurie Drabble, Karen Trocki, Jamie Klinger

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

ObjectiveDespite research documenting disparities in risk for alcohol-related problems among sexual minority women, few studies explore potential protective factors within this population. This study examines how religiosity may function as a protective or risk factor for alcohol-problems or other substance use among sexual minorities compared to heterosexuals.MethodData from 11,169 women who responded to sexual identity and sexual behavior questions from three population-based National Alcohol Survey waves (2000, 2005, 2010) were utilized for analyses of religiosity in relation to lifetime drinking, past year hazardous drinking, and past year drug use.ResultsReligiosity was significantly greater among exclusively heterosexual women compared to all sexual …

Characteristics Of Communication In Families Of Alcoholics, Marie Haverfield, Jennifer Theiss, John Leustek Mar 2016

Characteristics Of Communication In Families Of Alcoholics, Marie Haverfield, Jennifer Theiss, John Leustek

Faculty Publications

In the United States, roughly 43% of adults have encountered alcoholism in their family, and one in four children lives with an alcoholic parent (Grant, 2000). Prior research suggests that alcoholism can negatively impact the nature and quality of family relations, but studies rarely consider the specific ways in which family communication dynamics are impacted by the disease. Thus, the goal of this study was to identify the characteristics of communication in families of alcoholics and to develop a larger conceptual model to guide future inquiries in this context. A national sample of 682 adult children of alcoholics were asked …
