Emotional Intelligence Of Library Personnel And Library Work Productivity In Selected Academic Libraries In Oyo State, Nigeria, John Adeboye Oyeboade

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a capacity that profoundly affects all other abilities in every human being, either facilitating or interfering with them. This study investigated emotional intelligence of library personnel and library work productivity in selected Academic Libraries in Oyo State, Nigeria. Responses were generated from 186 library personnel across eight (8) selected academic libraries in Oyo State, Nigeria. The questionnaire was used for data collection. Using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation, it was found out that Self-Awareness (r = .521**; P < 0.05), Self-Management (r = .154*; P < 0.05), Social Awareness (r = .192**; P < 0.05), and Relationship Management (r = .790**; P < 0.05) were positively correlated with Library Work Productivity. Likewise, Emotional Intelligence (r = .085*; P < 0.05) has significant positive relationship with Library Work Productivity. The ANOVA showed that self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management jointly and significantly predict library work productivity by 52.1%. The paper therefore, recommended academic library Managements can therefore include quality EI training and coaching in their on the job training programs. Those who work extra hours to make up for yet to be realised goals should adequately be motivated. Finally, Emotional Intelligence Quotients should form part of the criteria for employing library personnel in Nigerian academic libraries.

Theoretical Modelling To Explain Lecturers’ Use Of Educational Support Systems For Teaching In University-Based Library Schools In Nigeria: Extending The Technology Acceptance Model (Tam)., Taiwo Adetoun Akinde

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Abstract

This work is an attempt at theoretical modelling. The result of a search for a theoretical framework and a conceptual model to explain lecturers’ use of Educational Support Systems (ESS) for teaching in university-based library schools in Nigeria. The applicability, similarity and relevance of Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA), Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) were discussed. TAM was found to be the most appropriate framework for the research based on its variables and/or constructs; hence, a research model, an adaptation of TAM was drawn and used to guide the research. Based on the …

Efficient Pair-Wise Similarity Computation Using Apache Spark, Parineetha Gandhi Tirumali May 2016

Efficient Pair-Wise Similarity Computation Using Apache Spark, Parineetha Gandhi Tirumali

Master's Projects

Entity matching is the process of identifying different manifestations of the same real world entity. These entities can be referred to as objects(string) or data instances. These entities are in turn split over several databases or clusters based on the signatures of the entities. When entity matching algorithms are performed on these databases or clusters, there is a high possibility that a particular entity pair is compared more than once. The number of comparison for any two entities depend on the number of common signatures or keys they possess. This effects the performance of any entity matching algorithm. This paper …

Communication In Information Seeking Behaviour, Aondoana Daniel Orlu, Kaase Dominic Imeh, Benedict Ifeanyichukwu Okike

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Abstracts Much research has been carried out into information behaviour over many years. In every field, researchers study information seeking and use in yet another context (culture, organization, health, community, domain, and so on) without regard to any understandings of information seeking and use in other contexts.” This research set out to address these criticisms by building on existing models from library and information science and from communication studies to develop a new representation of information behaviour – one that encompasses seeking, use and communication of information. The ISCM model has been used to examine information behaviour in health care …

The Csi Effect: Fact Or Fiction?, Kavita Alejo May 2016

The Csi Effect: Fact Or Fiction?, Kavita Alejo

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

The CSI effect has been a subject undergoing intense scrutiny in recent years. With the ever-increasing number of television shows, such as CSI and all of its spinoffs, that poorly represent the field of forensic science, there has also been a growing concern over the effects that media has on the legal system. Prosecutors argue that the CSI effect raises their burden of proof and makes jurors more likely to acquit in cases involving little or no forensic evidence, while defense lawyers claim that jurors are more inclined to wrongfully convict based on their unrealistic perceptions of forensic evidence. This …

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

This study examines honor killing attitudes amongst a sample of sixty graduate and undergraduate students in the Department of Justice Studies at San Jose State University and offers a systematic review of published academic literature on honor killings. It hypothesizes that students who strongly adhere to patriarchal traditionalism are more likely to endorse legitimacy of honor killings, controlling for gender, education, family size, religion, religiosity/religious conviction, and female chastity expectations. Descriptive findings suggest that the majority of respondents disagree that honor murders are justified, regardless of circumstances, dependent variable honor killing attitudes. Respondents also report negative attitudes toward authority and …

Beyond Dna: Epigenetics And Proteomics In Forensic Science, Diane F. Eilerts May 2016

Beyond Dna: Epigenetics And Proteomics In Forensic Science, Diane F. Eilerts

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

The use of genetic evidence in criminal cases is well established and has improved the public opinion and credibility of forensic science. However, several shortcomings associated with current genetic profiling techniques exist. Scientific research aimed at increasing the overall knowledge and understanding of biological factors will lead to the development of methods capable of improving the discriminating power of DNA evidence, overcoming limitations associated with DNA evidence, or complementing current methods of DNA profiling. Increased research in the fields of epigenetics and proteomics are particularly promising and relevant to forensic science. Research suggests that epigenetic biomarkers can be used to …

Human Cattle: Prison Overpopulation And The Political Economy Of Mass Incarceration, Peter Hanna

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

This paper examines the costs and impacts of prison overpopulation and mass incarceration on individuals, families, communities, and society as a whole. We start with an overview of the American prison system and the costs of maintaining it today, and move on to an account of the historical background of the prison system to provide context for the discussions later in this paper. This paper proceeds to go into more detail about the financial and social costs of mass incarceration, concluding that the costs of the prison system outweigh its benefits. This paper will then discuss the stigma and stereotypes …

After providing background on the Public Safety Realignment Act, this article will analyze the effectiveness of the policy and make recommendations.

The Effects Of Epigenetics On Stress Response, Kevin Suddarth May 2016

The Effects Of Epigenetics On Stress Response, Kevin Suddarth

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

Despite the vast amount of resources at the disposal of humanity today, the intricacies of human biology are often a mystery. The chemical and biological products of the human genome have been well studied and documented, but many of the chemical and neurological pathways are missing quite a few details. The human stress response is one of the most primal and valuable functions of this code that developed as a self- preservation mechanism (Hans, 1975) to naturally increase the odds of procreation. However, this function is prone to overload, particularly in individuals with certain epigenetic traits instilled by early life …

Selling Queer Rights: The Commodification Of Queer Rights Activism, Laurence Pedroni

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

With the recent Supreme Court decision to legalize same-sex marriage throughout the country, many have spoken in support of the decision, calling it a massive expansion of civil rights. While affording marriage rights to same-sex couples, these rights and expansions should be understood in the greater context of historical queer rights struggle and the economic factors that have motivated these civil rights expansions. This article will examine how the expansion of gay marriage rights was motivated not by concerns with civil rights, but out of economic concerns. This process has, in effect, commodified queer rights, weakening queer rights politics to …

Effectiveness And Feasibility Of In-Office Versus Smartphone Text-Delivered Nutrition Education In The College Setting: A Mixed-Methods Pilot Study, Jordan Rose, Deepika Goyal, Mary Ellen Wilkosz, Anita Catlin

Doctoral Projects

Often, being away from home for the first time, coupled with limited knowledge regarding healthy eating behaviors, leads to poor food choices and an increased risk of obesity among college-aged young adults. These college students are prone to high-calorie diets and limited physical activity, putting them at risk for obesity, a physiologically, psychologically, and financially costly epidemic in the United States. College students use their cellular phones over eight and a half hours a day and cell phones are their primary means of information consumption outside of the classroom, suggesting that the phones would be a useful tool to provide …

Exploring Bicycle And Public Transit Use By Low-Income Latino Immigrants: A Mixed-Methods Study In The San Francisco Bay Area, Jesus M. Barajas, Daniel G. Chatman, Asha W. Agrawal

Mineta Transportation Institute

Latin American immigrants will continue to make up a large share of transit ridership, bicycling and walking in the United States for the foreseeable future, but there is relatively little research about them. This mixed-methods study compares the travel patterns of low-income immigrants living in the San Francisco Bay Area with that of other groups and investigates the barriers and constraints faced by low-income immigrants when taking transit and bicycling. Much of the previous work on immigrant travel has relied on national surveys and qualitative analysis, which underrepresent disadvantaged population groups and slower modes of travel, or are unable to …

Undiagnosed Depression In The Elderly And Healthcare Education, Nancy J. Wynn-Grundy May 2016

Undiagnosed Depression In The Elderly And Healthcare Education, Nancy J. Wynn-Grundy

Doctoral Projects

This descriptive study examined undiagnosed depression in the elderly and how it affects the elderly from retaining healthcare education. It is estimated by 2029, 20% of the United States population will be age 65 and older (Colby & Ortman, 2014). Depression in the elderly who have chronic diseases, is estimated to be undiagnosed up to 40% (Chaoyang et al., 2009). A hallmark symptom of depression is the inability to concentrate. It is unknown if undiagnosed depression will affect the older adult from retaining pertinent healthcare education. The 30 point Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) was administered to a class of elderly …

Nursing Input During Interprofessional Rounds In The Intensive Care Unit, Kathrine A. Winnie May 2016

Nursing Input During Interprofessional Rounds In The Intensive Care Unit, Kathrine A. Winnie

Teaching And Evaluation Of Suicidal Assessment, Five-Step Evaluation And Triage (Safe-T) In The Emergency Department, Evangeline Rico

Doctoral Projects

Suicide remains to be a global and a national problem, and it continues to be one of the leading causes of death in the United States (U.S.) The Emergency Department (ED), being the gateway to the hospital can provide a great opportunity to assess each patient for suicidal ideation, and evaluate if patients present with risk factors for suicide. The competency of the ED staff plays a critical role in early recognition of patients who are at risk, and in implementing a plan of care for those with positive screens. However, researchers showed that knowledge deficit and lack of education …
