Neural Net Stock Trend Predictor, Sonal Kabra
Neural Net Stock Trend Predictor, Sonal Kabra
Master's Projects
This report analyzes new and existing stock market prediction techniques. Traditional technical analysis was combined with various machine-learning approaches such as artificial neural networks, k-nearest neighbors, and decision trees. Experiments we conducted show that technical analysis together with machine learning can be used to profitably direct an investor’s trading decisions. We are measuring the profitability of experiments by calculating the percentage weekly return for each stock entity under study. Our algorithms and simulations are developed using Python. The technical analysis methodology combined with machine learning algorithms show promising results which we discuss in this report.

We have used real genomic data having 22,763 samples and 154 features per sample. We have also created Synthetic Clinical data having 400 samples and 7 features per sample in order to predict accuracy of just clinical data. To validate the hypothesis, we have combined synthetic clinical data with subset of features from real genomic data. In our results, we observed that …
Path-Finding Methodology For Visually-Impaired Patients Based On Image-Processing, Abhilash Goyal
Path-Finding Methodology For Visually-Impaired Patients Based On Image-Processing, Abhilash Goyal
Master's Projects
The objective of this project is to propose and develop the path-finding methodology for the visually impaired patients. The proposed novel methodology is based on image-processing and it is targeted for the patients who are not completely blind. The major problem faced by visually impaired patients is to walk independently. It is mainly because these patients can not see obstacles in front of them due to the degradation in their eye sight. Degradation in the eye-sight is mainly because either the light doesn't focus on the retina properly or due to the malfunction of the photoreceptor cells on the retina, …
Document Classification Using Machine Learning, Ankit Basarkar
Document Classification Using Machine Learning, Ankit Basarkar
Master's Projects
To perform document classification algorithmically, documents need to be represented such that it is understandable to the machine learning classifier. The report discusses the different types of feature vectors through which document can be represented and later classified. The project aims at comparing the Binary, Count and TfIdf feature vectors and their impact on document classification. To test how well each of the three mentioned feature vectors perform, we used the 20-newsgroup dataset and converted the documents to all the three feature vectors. For each feature vector representation, we trained the Naïve Bayes classifier and then tested the generated classifier …

Policy-Agnostic Programming On The Client-Side, Kushal Palesha
Master's Projects
Browser security has become a major concern especially due to web pages becoming more complex. These web applications handle a lot of information, including sensitive data that may be vulnerable to attacks like data exfiltration, cross-site scripting (XSS), etc. Most modern browsers have security mechanisms in place to prevent such attacks but they still fall short in preventing more advanced attacks like evolved variants of data exfiltration. Moreover, there is no standard that is followed to implement security into the browser.
A lot of research has been done in the field of information flow security that could prove to be …
Mining Frequency Of Drug Side Effects Over A Large Twitter Dataset Using Apache Spark, Dennis Hsu
Mining Frequency Of Drug Side Effects Over A Large Twitter Dataset Using Apache Spark, Dennis Hsu
Master's Projects
Despite clinical trials by pharmaceutical companies as well as current FDA reporting systems, there are still drug side effects that have not been caught. To find a larger sample of reports, a possible way is to mine online social media. With its current widespread use, social media such as Twitter has given rise to massive amounts of data, which can be used as reports for drug side effects. To process these large datasets, Apache Spark has become popular for fast, distributed batch processing. In this work, we have improved on previous pipelines in sentimental analysis-based mining, processing, and extracting tweets …
Transcriptase–Light: A Polymorphic Virus Construction Kit, Saurabh Borwankar
Transcriptase–Light: A Polymorphic Virus Construction Kit, Saurabh Borwankar
Master's Projects
Many websites use JavaScript to display dynamic and interactive content. Hence, attackers are developing JavaScript–based malware. In this paper, we focus on Transcriptase JavaScript malware.
The high–level and dynamic nature of the JavaScript language helps malware writers to create polymorphic and metamorphic malware using obfuscation techniques. These types of malware change their internal structure on each infection, making them difficult to detect with traditional methods. These types of malware can be detected using machine learning methods.
This project creates Transcriptase–Light, a new polymorphic construction kit. We perform an experiment with the Transcriptase–Light against a hidden Markov model. Our experiment shows …
Headline Generation Using Deep Neural Networks, Dhruven Vora
Headline Generation Using Deep Neural Networks, Dhruven Vora
Master's Projects
News headline generation is one of the important text summarization tasks. Human generated news headlines are generally intended to catch the eye rather than provide useful information. There have been many approaches to generate meaningful headlines by either using neural networks or using linguistic features. In this report, we are proposing a novel approach based on integrating Hedge Trimmer, which is a grammar based extractive summarization system with a deep neural network abstractive summarization system to generate meaningful headlines. We analyze the results against current recurrent neural network based headline generation system.
Application Of Computational Methods To Study The Selection Of Authentic And Cryptic Splice Sites, Tapomay Dey
Application Of Computational Methods To Study The Selection Of Authentic And Cryptic Splice Sites, Tapomay Dey
Master's Projects
Proteins are building blocks of the bodies of eukaryotes, and the process of synthesizing proteins from DNA is crucial for the good health of an organism [13]. However, some mutations in the DNA may disrupt the selection of 5’ or 3’ splice sites by a spliceosome. An important research question is whether the disruptions have a stochastic relation to the position of nucleotides in the vicinity of the known authentic and cryptic splice sites. This can be achieved by proving that the authentic and cryptic splice sites are intrinsically different. However, the behavior of the spliceosome is not accurately known. …

Narcissistic Traits Of Police Officers In America, Paloma Moran
Narcissistic Traits Of Police Officers In America, Paloma Moran
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
The narcissistic traits of police officers aged 17 to 78 in the United States affect American citizens in various degrees. Improvements made to pre-employment psychological evaluations, such as the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2), the L (Lie) Scale, and the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI), may detect and screen out police officer candidates with underlying Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). It is important that candidates with NPD be screened out as, if they become officers, they may commit acts of police misconduct, which greatly affect the safety and trust of the American people.

Attitudes And Perceptions Of Advanced Practice Nurses Towards Health Information Technology And Its Effects On Caring, Debbie Ramos Shih
Attitudes And Perceptions Of Advanced Practice Nurses Towards Health Information Technology And Its Effects On Caring, Debbie Ramos Shih
Doctoral Projects
Technology is rapidly, constantly evolving, and affecting healthcare. While it has the ability to improve healthcare outcomes, it is important to realize the impact this technology has on the relationships between patients and nurses (Korhonen, et al., 2015). Interactions with patients are increasing through computer technology and decreasing by physical presence and touch, potentially compromising the development of a trusting relationship and thus affecting patient quality outcomes (Sandelowski, 2002).
This cross sectional study explored the attitudes and perceptions of APRNs towards HIT and its effects on caring. 150 Advanced Practice Clinicians in a Northern California healthcare was surveyed, using the …
Preconception Care Of Women On Prescribed Opioids, Rebecca-Maria Norwick
Preconception Care Of Women On Prescribed Opioids, Rebecca-Maria Norwick
Doctoral Projects
The landmark 2015 report from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) posited that too many women of reproductive age received prescribed opioids. This is significant because fetal exposure to a known teratogen can have catastrophic outcomes. Furthermore, women are often ambivalent about birth control and many pregnancies are unplanned. Fortunately, women identify interactions with health care providers as acceptable cues for preconception decision making. Data has shown that Medicaid populations are disproportionately prescribed opioids compared to insured populations. However, the CDC defines reproductive status by age only. Therefore, the purpose of this research project was to identify women’s actual risk …

An Assessment Of The Associate Degree Nursing Students’ Understanding Of Health Literacy Concepts When Providing Health Promotion For The Diabetic Patient, Donna L. Lebaron
Doctoral Projects
Health literacy (HL) concept deficiencies exist in undergraduate nursing curricula (Smith and Zsohar, 2011; Cornett, 2009; Jukkala, Deupree, Graham, 2009). As future nurses who will have a significant impact on client health literacy assessment, it is essential that health literacy-related content be integrated into undergraduate nursing educational curricula (Sand-Jecklin, Murray, Summers, Watson, 2010; McCleary-Jones, 2012). The prevalence of Type 2 diabetes (T2D) has significantly increased resulting in greater morbidity and mortality risks to the general public; therefore, programs for diabetes prevention, education, and health literacy assessments have become a national priority (Whittemore, Rosenberg, Gilmore, Withey, and Breault, 2013; Hemingway, Stephenson, …
The Influence A Multiple Teaching Modalities Course On Knowledge And Self-Confidence Of Newly Trained Emergency Nurses, Anna C. Montejano
The Influence A Multiple Teaching Modalities Course On Knowledge And Self-Confidence Of Newly Trained Emergency Nurses, Anna C. Montejano
Doctoral Projects
Many new graduate residency programs exist supporting new registered nurses (RN) transition from theory to practice, but what is not reported in the literature are programs for RNs transitioning in practice to specialty care units, such as the emergency department. Furthermore, literature addressing the use of multiple teaching modalities as a method in course work is limited. A quasi-experimental design study explored the influence a multiple teaching modalities course on the knowledge and self-confidence of newly trained emergency department nurses. Results indicated using multiple teaching modalities provided a benefit to newly trained ED nurses with an increase in knowledge and …
African American Men And Ostrich Behavior, Debbie Slack-Gay
African American Men And Ostrich Behavior, Debbie Slack-Gay
Doctoral Projects
This project explores why African American men choose Ostrich Behavior when it comes to health care prevention and maintenance as related to hypertension. The population was African American men, ages18–80, in Northern California. Men were recruited while getting a haircut or waiting for one or after church services. Blood pressure readings were taken and a health questionnaire was administered. The results show that even if hypertension is known, men ages 18–45 go to fewer office visits than African American men in other age groups, and older men tend to seek medical care and take medication if prescribed.
