Analyzing Student-Teacher Relationships Of Cariño And Confianza And Their Impact On Academic Engagement By Latino Males, Nereida Robles Vasquez

Dissertations

Latinos attending California’s public schools often feel disconnected, unwelcome, and unsafe. This qualitative interview study uses the grounded theory approach to provide a platform for the voices of Latino male high school students to explain their experiences. This approach allows for understanding of why a large number of them are transferred from their schools to alternative settings which in turn greatly limit and often prevent them from continuing their education. Many describe experiences of rejection and hostility causing them to drop out, or to have no interest in furthering their education. Findings illustrate the impact of their perception of Required …

From The Ground Up: Providing Support To Emergent Bilinguals To Distinguish Language Difference From Disability, Andrea Golloher, David Whitenack, Lisa Simpson, Donna Sacco

Faculty Publications

National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) data reveal that students with disabilities who are emergent bilinguals (English language learners) have the lowest levels of profficiency in reading and mathematics among all student groups. We consider issues related to the instruction of emergent bilinguals, including those identified as having specific learning disabilities, using a Response to Intervention (RTI)/Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) model. In so doing, we argue that instructional practices consistent with a robust Tier 1 framework are beneficial to emergent bilinguals with and without learning disabilities while differentiating Tier 2 and 3 interventions may improve outcomes for emergent bilingual …

The Relevance Of Extracurricular Activities For Citizenship: Why Cutting Budget For Student Associational Activity Is A Bad Policy, Jason A. Laker, Tomaž Deželan, Domen Kos

Faculty Publications

Universities are tasked with providing rigorous education and training for successful entry into disciplinary and professional fields. Their instrumental roles are situated within broader commitments to political communities through cultural stewardship. As such, the process of socializing students with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions of democratic citizenship is a complementary and acute obligation of institutions of higher education. Student Associations arguably serve as strategic enablers of this key responsibility through their unique identities as laboratories of shared governance. When students participate in co-creating their educational and community experiences, the dividends for learning and development escalate. The deliberative processes and activities …

Background Metabolomics is emerging as an important tool for detecting differences between diseased and non-diseased individuals. However, prospective studies are limited. Methods We examined the detectability, reliability, and distribution of metabolites measured in pre-diagnostic plasma samples in a pilot study of women enrolled in the Northern California site of the Breast Cancer Family Registry. The study included 45 cases diagnosed with breast cancer at least one year after the blood draw, and 45 controls. Controls were matched on age (within 5 years), family status, BRCA status, and menopausal status. Duplicate samples were included for reliability assessment. We used a liquid …

A Modular Multi-Level Converter For Energy Management Of Hybrid Energy-Storage Systems In Electric Vehicles, Sharon Sanjeev George Jan 2018

A Modular Multi-Level Converter For Energy Management Of Hybrid Energy-Storage Systems In Electric Vehicles, Sharon Sanjeev George

Master's Theses

Electric vehicles (EVs) are substantial applications of clean energy. Their effectiveness for mainstream transportation is predicated on the efficient use of stored energy within the vehicles’ power pack. Among rechargeable storage solutions, lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery cells have high energy density making them suitable to supply the EVs’ average power. However, the peak power requirements of the vehicles exert stress on the Li-ion cells due to their low pulsating power capabilities. Ultracapacitors can be used instead as the power-pulsating storage elements given their superior power density. Incorporating the two cell types for energy storage signifies a hybrid configuration that leads to …

Airborne Doppler Radar Observations Of Pyrocu/Cb Plume Kinematics And Thermodynamics During The 2016 Pioneer Fire, Bruno Rodriguez Jan 2018

Airborne Doppler Radar Observations Of Pyrocu/Cb Plume Kinematics And Thermodynamics During The 2016 Pioneer Fire, Bruno Rodriguez

Master's Theses

During a period of explosive growth of the Pioneer Fire (Idaho, August 2016), deep pyroconvective plumes were sampled by aircraft. The research aircraft was equipped with both remote sensing and in situ instrumentation, including a W-Band Doppler radar which provided high-resolution vertical velocity retrievals from within the developing pyrocumulus. Being the first direct observations of vertical velocity within a pyrocumulus cloud, they have provided unique insights into the dynamical processes governing pyroconvective environments, with important implications for the fire modeling community. The observations were quality-controlled and corrected for issues such as Doppler velocity aliasing, and the plume’s kinematic structure was …

It is a constitutional right of all South Africans to have access to information held by the state or any other person especially if the information is required to protect a right (South Africa 1996). With this right comes the obligation on the state to ensure that whatever information it has in its possession, and can be reasonably shared, is distributed widely, openly, freely and fairly to the citizenry. Since the adoption of the Constitution in 1996, the Internet’s reach in South Africa has increased significantly.
