Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

ABSTRACT

National integration and national development are the important tools for the growth and existence of the nation. This cannot be possible without reliable and adequate information resources and services. One of the social institutions that responsible for the delivery of information resources and services are libraries. From the literature reviewed, the study showed that for library to easily achieve these goals, they need to tailored their collection and services toward Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which will help them to easily achieve these goals. The study also suggest different ways by which library could reposition their services to contribute to …

Asian Long-Range Transport In Relation To Atmospheric Rivers In Northern California, Catherine Liu, Sen Chiao, Ju-Mee Ryoo

Faculty Publications, Meteorology and Climate Science

The study investigates the effect of aerosol long-range transport on precipitation over Northern California during atmospheric river (AR) events in the 2017 cold season (January–April). ARs in 2017 were one of the strongest to date, and the intense precipitation associated with the ARs resulted in flooding, destruction of property, and contamination of water supplies. The Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data shows Asian dust traveling across the Northern Pacific Ocean along with AR events. Aerosol measurements in California, provided by the Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments (IMPROVE), show that more Asian dust tends to …

The goal of this research was to identify points of intervention at which programmes and policies could cultivate gender-equitable attitudes among youth in Sri Lanka, with a goal of reducing GBV in adulthood.
Methods:
Over 9 months, the lead author interviewed 18 young adults (ages 18-30) in urban Sri Lanka to understand how their experiences influenced their gender identity, as …

Yoda – Your Only Design Assistant, Siddharth Kulkarni

Master's Projects

Converting user interface designs created by graphic designers into computer code is a typical job of a front end engineer in order to develop functional web and mobile applications. This conversion process can often be extremely tedious, slow and prone to human error. In this project, deep learning based object detection along with optical character recognition is used to generate platform ready prototypes directly from design sketches. Also, a new design language is introduced to facilitate expressive prototyping and allowing the creation of more expressive and functional designs. It is observed that the AI powered application along with modern web …

Classification Of Humans Into Ayurvedic Prakruti Types Using Computer Vision, Gayatri Gadre May 2019

Classification Of Humans Into Ayurvedic Prakruti Types Using Computer Vision, Gayatri Gadre

Master's Projects

Ayurveda, a 5000 years old Indian medical science, believes that the universe and hence humans are made up of five elements namely ether, fire, water, earth, and air. The three Doshas (Tridosha) Vata, Pitta, and Kapha originated from the combinations of these elements. Every person has a unique combination of Tridosha elements contributing to a person’s ‘Prakruti’. Prakruti governs the physiological and psychological tendencies in all living beings as well as the way they interact with the environment. This balance influences their physiological features like the texture and colour of skin, hair, eyes, length of fingers, the shape of the …

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

The development of a stationary phase material for high-performance liquid chromatography based on a surface of silica hydride as opposed to silanols on ordinary silica is discussed including synthetic approaches, characterization, and applications. There are several synthetic approaches available to create a silica hydride surface. Modification of the Si–H moiety on the silica surface can be accomplished through the use of a hydrosilation reaction. Both the intermediate silica hydride and the material modified with an organic moiety can be characterized by a number of spectroscopic as well as a variety of other methods. Further insights into the retention mechanism are …

Stock Market Prediction Using Ensemble Of Graph Theory, Machine Learning And Deep Learning Models, Pratik Patil

Master's Projects

Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) is the cornerstone of the modern financial theory and it states that it is impossible to predict the price of any stock using any trend, fundamental or technical analysis. Stock trading is one of the most important activities in the world of finance. Stock price prediction has been an age-old problem and many researchers from academia and business have tried to solve it using many techniques ranging from basic statistics to machine learning using relevant information such as news sentiment and historical prices. Even though some studies claim to get prediction accuracy higher than a random …

Sentiment Analysis For Search Engine, Saravana Gunaseelan

Master's Projects

The chief purpose of this study is to detect and eliminate the sentiment bias in a search engine. Sentiment bias means a bias induced in the search results based on the sentiment of the user’s search query. As people increasing depend on search engines for information, it is important to understand the quality of results produced by the search engines. This study does not try to build a search engine but leverage the existing search engines to provide better results to the user. In this study, only the queries that have high sentiment polarity are analyzed and the machine learning …

Classification Of Malware Models, Akriti Sethi May 2019

Classification Of Malware Models, Akriti Sethi

Master's Projects

Automatically classifying similar malware families is a challenging problem. In this research, we attempt to classify malware families by applying machine learning to machine learning models. Specifically, we train hidden Markov models (HMM) for each malware family in our dataset. The resulting models are then compared in two ways. First, we treat the HMM matrices as images and experiment with convolutional neural networks (CNN) for image classification. Second, we apply support vector machines (SVM) to classify the HMMs. We analyze the results and discuss the relative advantages and disadvantages of each approach.

Decomposition Of Pig Carcasses At Varying Room Temperature, Jacqueline Abad Santos May 2019

Decomposition Of Pig Carcasses At Varying Room Temperature, Jacqueline Abad Santos

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

The goal of this study is to assess the qualitative scoring of decomposition scales with statistical analysis while also determining which indoor environment will decompose the fastest. When comparing the three indoor environments, water decomposition appears to be the fastest, but the method of analysis for this study determines that using decomposition scales to analyze such environments may produce statistically insignificant results. For this study, piglets were put in a dry steel tub, a water filled steel tub, and a suitcase. These were recorded using photographs for 25 days and then scored using decomposition scales. The total score was divided …

Scientific Evidence Admissibility: Improving Judicial Proceedings To Decrease Erroneous Outcomes, Leica Kwong

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

In the United States, Federal Rules of Evidence 702, the Frye and Daubert standards govern the admissibility of scientific evidence in the courtroom. Some states adopted Frye while others adopted Daubert, causing varying judicial outcomes. The verdicts in some cases may be erroneous due to a nationally used standard. Frye has broad criteria of requiring scientific evidence to be generally accepted. While Daubert contains more requirements for the evidence to be admissible, such as peer review, publication, and scientific principles. Daubert, alongside FRE 702, provides a thorough guideline for trial judges who have the gatekeeping role to decide admissibility aiming …

Precursors Of School Shootings, Branden Harrington

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

This paper analyzes mass school shootings in the United States, stressing their root causes, indicators, demographics, and suggestive guidelines for preventable measures. Data draws associations between bullying, social dominance, and devalued masculinity amongst high school boys. Further, these trends emphasize homophobic harassment and the reassertion of lost dominance through violence. Moreover, research upholds media coverage and self-absorbed behavior as an additional precursor for inspired acts of malice. Journalistic representations of mass school shootings are identified as a source of motivation for vengeful and easily malleable youth. Studies also stress the importance of school inclusivity and interconnectedness, emitting a stark correlation …
