Detection Of Antibiotic Resistance Genes In The Wastewater Microbial Metagenome, Alan Caparaz Le
Master's Projects
The existential threat of emerging antibiotic resistance in microbial communities poses significant risks to public health. In particular, wastewater can serve as a point of confluence for pharmaceuticals and antibiotic-resistant bacteria from urban and agricultural settings. While this is a prime environment for genetic drift and horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile genetic elements, it also presents an opportunity for resistome monitoring via shotgun metagenomic sequencing and downstream analysis. This project reports the application of a hybrid assembly approach for the detection of ARGs within DNA derived from a wastewater sample collected from the San José-Santa Clara …
Robotic Parking Technology For Congestion Mitigation And Air Quality Control Around Park & Rides, Mahdi Yoozbashizadeh, Forouzan Golshani
Robotic Parking Technology For Congestion Mitigation And Air Quality Control Around Park & Rides, Mahdi Yoozbashizadeh, Forouzan Golshani
Mineta Transportation Institute
A lack or limited availability for parking may have multiple consequences, not the least of which is driver frustration, congestion, and air pollution. However, there is a greater problem that is not widely recognized by the public, namely the negative effect on the use of transit systems due to insufficient parking spaces close to key transit stations. Automated parking management systems, which have been successfully deployed in several European and Japanese cities, can manage parking needs at transit stations more effectively than other alternatives. Numerous studies have confirmed that quick and convenient automobile access to park-and-ride lots can be essential …

Do Multi-Use-Path Accessibility And The Clustering Effect Play A Role In Residents' Choice Of Walking And Cycling?, Chih-Hao Wang, Na Chen
Mineta Transportation Institute
The transportation studies literature recognizes the relationship between accessibility and active travel. However, there is limited research on the specific impact of walking and cycling accessibility to multi-use paths on active travel behavior. Combined with the culture of automobile dependency in the US, this knowledge gap has been making it difficult for policy-makers to encourage walking and cycling mode choices, highlighting the need to promote a walking and cycling culture in cities. In this case, a clustering effect (“you bike, I bike”) can be used as leverage to initiate such a trend. This project contributes to the literature as one …

Working with sensors has become an area of expertise within the domain of electronic engineering. On a day to day basis, thousands of sensors are put to use around us, for instance, in smoke alarms, speedometers, motors, computers, radiators etc. to accumulate sensor data, cables that connect the sensors to the bottom station after which the information is worked on. But cabling is often expensive especially when handling large scale industrial applications [5]. For an equivalent reason, low-cost wireless networks came into the picture recently and are in high demand. A research paper we found during our review of …

Cesarean delivery is the most common surgery performed in the United States, accounting for approximately 32% of all births. Emergency Cesarean deliveries are performed in the event of critical maternal or fetal distress and require effective collaboration and coordination of care by a multidisciplinary team with a high level of technical expertise. It is not well understood how the physical environment of the operating room (OR) impacts performance and how specialties work together in the space. Objective This study aimed to begin to address this gap using validated techniques in human factors to perform a participatory user-centered analysis of physical …

The retrieval of superior-quality photographs with a minimal exposure is an interesting subject in radiography. Pre-processing is a key phase in signal and image processing such as healthcare, telecommunications, and satellite, and it focuses on reducing or eliminating the extent of noise in the image. Denoising aids in the recovery of finer data and relevant material. Medical images including ECG, Ultrasound, CT-scan, and X-ray provide incredibly fine data that has to be precise and noise-free in order for the knowledge and aspects of interest to be retained during diagnosis. Various noise reduction technologies for medical images, such as wavelet transform, …
