This study explores sex differences in the relationship between childhood cyberbullying victimization (CCBV) and young adult sexual assault experiences and the potential moderating roles of childhood parent monitoring and deviant peer association on the relationship. A total of 356 college students aged 19–25 in the US participated in the online survey. The results indicated that CCBV was associated with an increased risk of college sexual assault victimization for both males and females. A significant moderating effect of childhood parental monitoring and deviant peer association was found between the association between CCBV and college sexual assault victimization for female students only.

Handgrip strength is a proxy for muscular fitness, an indicator for general health status, and is associated with cardiometabolic health. The mechanisms connecting handgrip strength to skeletal muscle function are incompletely understood. We applied integrated linkage-disequilibrium-adjusted colocalization analysis of genome-wide association study summary statistics for handgrip strength, combined with expression and splicing quantitative trait loci from skeletal muscle, and identified glycogen branching enzyme 1 (GBE1) as a candidate gene for handgrip strength. CRISPR-interference knockdown of GBE1 in immortalized human skeletal muscle cells (HMCL-7304) demonstrated decreased glycogen content and accumulation of polyglucosan bodies. Knockdown of GBE1 led to increased oxygen consumption …

KRAS4a and KRAS4b are important regulators of signaling, and their interactions with the plasma membrane are dynamic and influenced by lipid composition. KRAS 4a and 4b have nearly identical globular domains but differ in their membrane-associated hyper variable region (HVR). The functional distinctions between these isoforms remain unclear, particularly with regards to their dependence on specific lipids and the membrane environment. Previous work showed that the membrane orientation of KRAS4b affects its ability to bind to RAF kinase RBDCRD and that the KRAS–RBDCRD complex adopts different poses on the membrane as well as influences the size and composition of the …

Introduction: About 20% of police calls involve a person experiencing a behavioral health crisis. To better address these community member’s needs and reduce risk of harm, jurisdictions are developing programs that shift calls for crises related to homelessness, addiction, and mental health to non-law enforcement alternatives. In responding to these calls, first responders working in these alternative response programs are exposed to a different set of moral dilemmas and pressures, increasing their risk of developing moral injury. Methods: The Alternative Response Program Moral Injury and Burnout Model highlights causes of exposure to potentially morally injurious events and the interplay between …

The Instrumental Value Of Private Regulation: Evidence From The Case Of Corporate Non-Financial Reporting, Matthew Maguire
The Instrumental Value Of Private Regulation: Evidence From The Case Of Corporate Non-Financial Reporting, Matthew Maguire
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Critics of private regulation argue that voluntary standards often fail to meaningfully improve corporate conduct while simultaneously functioning as a stumbling block that prevents the development of more stringent, mandatory regulation by states. This paper complicates this view by illustrating the instrumental value of private regulation—that is, its potential to act as a building block that facilitates the development of new government regulation that serves the public interest. Through a combination of in-depth interviews and analysis of publicly available documents, I examine the impact of voluntary corporate non-financial reporting on public policy over the period 1997–2025. The analysis highlights the …

Background: The 2022–2023 “twindemic” of COVID-19 and influenza has worsened emergency department (ED) overcrowding, revealing racial/ethnic disparities in emergency care. This study assessed racial differences in ED operational outcomes—specifically, discharge ED length of stay (LOS), boarding time among admitted patients, and left without being seen (LWBS) rates—and characterized disparities concentrated in the upper tails of delay distributions. Methods: This retrospective observational study included adult ED encounters with respiratory presentations and/or laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 or influenza across 10 EDs in Michigan between September 2022 and December 2023. The primary outcomes were ED LOS at discharge, boarding of admitted patients, and LWBS. Models …

Opioid Use Knowledge And Attitudes Among U.S. Adults, Jadyn E. Knox
Master's Theses
The opioid epidemic remains a public health crisis, with overdose rates continuing to rise. Associations between individuals opioid use and knowledge of and attitudes toward opioid substances and overdoses have been investigated to inform educational interventions. However, many studies utilize college student or adolescent samples, and findings remain inconclusive. An assessment of opioid knowledge and attitudes across broader adult populations is lacking. Concurrently, replication literature in the social sciences is limited, therefore, the present study replicated and expanded upon Williams et al. (2013) and Vyas et al. (2023) studies. Reliability and validity of the Opioid Knowledge scale, Opioid Overdose Knowledge …

Introduction: Although artificial intelligence–based cancer diagnostic models have demonstrated strong predictive performance, their lack of transparency and reliance on single-modality data continue to limit clinical trust and adoption. Effectively integrating multi-modal data with interpret-able decision-making remains a key challenge. Methods: We propose an explainable multi-modal deep learning framework that integrates radiological imaging and structured clinical features using attention-based fusion. Image-level explanations are generated using Grad-CAM++, while SHAP is employed to quantify clinical feature contributions, enabling unified and cross-modal aligned interpretation rather than independent uni-modal explanations. The framework was evaluated on publicly available datasets, including CBIS-DDSM mammography, Duke Breast Cancer MRI, …

Malnutrition is a critical public health issue in Timor-Leste, where nearly half of children under five suffer from stunting and diets are chronically low in nutrient-rich foods, including fish. We conducted a cluster-randomized, 2×2 factorial, parallel-arm controlled trial to evaluate the effects of nearshore fish-aggregating devices (FADs, a technology designed to increase pelagic fish catch rates), social behaviour change (SBC) interventions, and their combination, on household fish purchasing and consumption in inland villages of Timor-Leste. However, inland households exposed to both FADs and SBC were nearly twice as likely to purchase fish (PR: 1.90, 95% CI: 1.14–3.20, p<0.05) and women were over four times as likely to report fish consumption the previous day (PR: 4.17, 95% CI: 1.88–9.29, p<0.001), compared to controls. No significant effects were observed from FADs or SBC alone. These findings suggest that the combination of supply-side (FAD) and demand-side (SBC) interventions is necessary to improve dietary intake in nutritionally vulnerable, inland populations. These results underscore the importance of integrated food system approaches to address poor diet quality and reduce malnutrition risks in small island developing states. Trial registration: Trial registered at clinicaltrials.gov Identifier: NCT04729829.

Background Globally, work rumination is a common phenomenon related to nurse burnout. However, most existing studies focus on the single negative impacts of rumination, with less exploration of its dual effects and antecedents. Therefore, comprehensively exploring the effect of nurse work rumination and its influencing factors is crucial for enhancing the accuracy of nursing management. Objectives Identify the antecedents and dual effects of nurse work rumination to deepen understanding of this phenomenon and provide references for formulating interventions that enhance nurses’ well-being and improve the quality of nursing work. Eligibility criteria Included studies were original research articles focusing on work-related …

Hippocampal subfields differentially develop and age, and they vary in vulnerability to neurodegenerative diseases. Innovation in high-resolution imaging has accelerated clinical research on human hippocampal subfields, but substantial differences in segmentation protocols impede comparisons of results across laboratories. The Hippocampal Subfields Group (HSG) is an international organization seeking to address this issue by developing a histologically valid, reliable, and freely available segmentation protocol for high-resolution T2-weighted 3 T MRI (http://www.hippocampalsubfields.com). Here, we report the first portion of the protocol focused on subfields in the hippocampal body; protocols for the head and tail are in development. The body protocol includes definitions …

Accurate diagnostics are essential for disease control and elimination efforts. However, access to diagnostics for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) is hindered by limited healthcare infrastructure in many NTD-endemic regions, as well as by reliance on time- and labor-intensive diagnostic methods, such as smear microscopy. New diagnostic tools that are portable, rapid, low-cost, and meet World Health Organization (WHO) sensitivity and specificity targets are urgently needed to accelerate NTD control and elimination programs. Here, we introduce the NTDscope, a portable microscopy platform that enables point-of-care imaging and automated detection of parasites and other pathogens in patient samples. The NTDscope builds on …

Study Objectives Chronic sleep loss is widespread and can cause deficits in vigilant attention. There are few practical biomarkers that can be used to assess the impact of chronic sleep loss on alertness and performance. Those that are available, such as tests of vigilant attention, cannot discriminate chronic sleep loss from other impairments, like alcohol intoxication, limiting the use of such tools. We aimed to test whether a suite of behavioral oculometrics would be sensitive, and perhaps specific, to chronic sleep restriction (CSR). Methods We conducted a randomized, counterbalanced, cross-over study to compare behavioral oculometrics following a week of 5 …
