“A Very Crushable, Kissable Girl": Queer Love And The Invention Of The Abnormal Girl Among College Women In The Gilded Age And Progressive Era, Wendy L. Rouse

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Young women growing up in the Gilded Age and Progressive Era increasingly found their relationships subject to scrutiny as doctors, parents, teachers, and school administrators began to worry about the so-called abnormal girl. Attempts to suppress the culture of crushes and romantic friendships between young women reflected these larger cultural anxieties about their relationships. But, as notions of normative girlhood began to form, this intense scrutiny of their relationships had a significant impact on their everyday lives. The young women who were navigating this scientific and cultural shift developed a range of innovative strategies from subversively concealing their relationships to …

Cloud-Centric Blockchain Public Key Infrastructure For Big Data Applications, Brian Tuan Khieu, Melody Moh Jul 2022

Cloud-Centric Blockchain Public Key Infrastructure For Big Data Applications, Brian Tuan Khieu, Melody Moh

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

A cloud-based public key infrastructure (PKI) utilizing blockchain technology is proposed. Big data ecosystems have scalable and resilient needs that current PKI cannot satisfy. Enhancements include using blockchains to establish persistent access to certificate data and certificate revocation lists, decoupling of data from certificate authority, and hosting it on a cloud provider to tap into its traffic security measures. Instead of holding data within the transaction data fields, certificate data and status were embedded into smart contracts. The tests revealed a significant performance increase over that of both traditional and the version that stored data within blocks. The proposed method …

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Combined With Listening To Preferred Music Alters Cortical Speech Processing In Older Adults, Gavin M. Bidelman, Ricky Chow, Alix Noly-Gandon, Jennifer D. Ryan, Karen L. Bell, Rose Rizzi, Claude Alain

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Emerging evidence suggests transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can improve cognitive performance in older adults. Similarly, music listening may improve arousal and stimulate subsequent performance on memory-related tasks. We examined the synergistic effects of tDCS paired with music listening on auditory neurobehavioral measures to investigate causal evidence of short-term plasticity in speech processing among older adults. In a randomized sham-controlled crossover study, we measured how combined anodal tDCS over dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) paired with listening to autobiographically salient music alters neural speech processing in older adults compared to either music listening (sham stimulation) or tDCS alone. EEG assays included …

Matching Risk Vulnerabilities With Capacities For Building Supply Chain Resilience – A Theoretical Framework For Low-Probability, High-Impact Risks, Ming Zhou, Shu Zhou, Tianqin Shi, Taeho Park

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

COVID-19 best reminds us of how every pain that is felt by supply chains goes to impact production. An aggregated framework of supply chain risk analysis is needed. This research endeavoured to theoretically structure the inter-relationships among supply chain vulnerabilities as well as corresponding capacity factors to mitigate supply chain risks and sustain supply chain resilience. An inter-relationship structure among risk vulnerabilities was mapped. Capacity factors were matched with each vulnerability category using anecdotal evidence found from various news and literature databases relevant to supply chain resilience concepts. The derived capacity-vulnerability typology revealed links between vulnerability and capacity factors and …

The World Health Organization labelled the new COVID-19 breakout a public health crisis of worldwide concern on 30 January 2020, and it was named the new global pandemic in March 2020. It has had catastrophic consequences on the world economy and well-being of people and has put a tremendous strain on already-scarce healthcare systems globally, particularly in underdeveloped countries. Over 11 billion vaccine doses have already been administered worldwide, and the benefits of these vaccinations will take some time to appear. Today, the only practical approach to diagnosing COVID-19 is through the RT-PCR and RAT tests, which have sometimes been …

Mangrove Dispersal Disrupted By Projected Changes In Global Seawater Density, Tom Van Der Stocken, Bram Vanschoenwinkel, Dustin Carroll, Kyle C. Cavanaugh, Nico Koedam

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The degree to which the distribution of mangrove forests will be impacted by climate change depends on the dispersal and establishment of sea-faring propagules, which drive forest rejuvenation, gene flow and range expansion. Climate change affects sea surface density via changes in temperature and salinity. However, these changes have not been mapped and it remains unclear how these factors may impact mangrove propagule dispersal. Here, we provide evidence for strong warming of coastal mangrove waters and elevated geographic variability in surface ocean density under representative concentration pathway RCP 8.5 by 2100. The largest changes will occur in the Indo West …

Culturally Tailored Diabetes Self-Management Educational (Dsme) Program And Its Impact On Motivation And Self-Efficacy Among Hispanic Adults With T2dm: A Pilot Study, Andrellie P. Van Wageningen Jul 2022

Culturally Tailored Diabetes Self-Management Educational (Dsme) Program And Its Impact On Motivation And Self-Efficacy Among Hispanic Adults With T2dm: A Pilot Study, Andrellie P. Van Wageningen

Doctoral Projects

Type 2 diabetes mellitus in the United States is an epidemic that disproportionately affects Hispanics in the state of California. Many factors have been attributed to this phenomenon because of their unique characteristics. As recent studies have pointed out, their social determinants of health, cultural influences, and genetic predisposition often lead to poor health outcomes and impaired quality of life. A targeted approach is critical in promoting increased diabetes knowledge, enabling skills to master self-care activities, and positive self-care behaviors to avert poor outcomes. The purpose of this doctoral project is to examine whether culturally tailored DSME influences an individual’s …

Open Innovation Web-Based Platform For Evaluation Of Water Quality Based On Big Data Analysis, Xiaofang Han, Hong Shen, Hongqing Hu, Jerry Gao

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

There are many models presented that assess water quality. However, the applications of the models are limited due to the difficulty of preparing input data and interpreting model output. In this paper, we developed a Web-based platform to assist researchers in analyzing water quality. The data from sensors can be automatically imported to the platform according to the configured information of data structures. The platform also provides conventional methods and big data methods for the users to analyze water quality. Moreover, the users can choose the water quality parameters according to the water usage. The presented platform can show the …

Productivity losses caused by absenteeism at work cost U.S. employers billions of dollars each year. In addition, employers typically spend a considerable amount of time managing employees who perform poorly. By using predictive analytics and machine learning algorithms, organizations can make better decisions, thereby increasing organizational productivity, reducing costs, and im-proving efficiency. Thus, in this paper we propose hybrid optimization methods in order to find the most parsimonious model for absenteeism classification. We utilized data from a Brazilian courier company. In order to categorize absenteeism classes, we preprocessed the data, selected the attributes via multiple methods, balanced the dataset using …
