The High Cost Of Real Estate In The San Francisco Bay Area, California, Judy Y. L. Law May 1996

The High Cost Of Real Estate In The San Francisco Bay Area, California, Judy Y. L. Law

Master's Projects

The cost of San Francisco Bay Area real estate has increased significantly in the last three decades. Many residents cannot afford to buy the highly priced real estate of today's market. The San Francisco Bay Area encompasses nine counties including San Mateo, San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, Napa, Solano, Contra Costa, Alameda, and Santa Clara. Figure 1 shows the geographic locations of these nine counties.

The large population increase after World War II has been accommodated by a parallel construction boom between the 1940's and 1970’s. Only a relatively modest upward surge in housing prices occurred during this period. Nevertheless, the …

Breast Self-Examination Teaching For Women In Chemical Dependency Programs, Michelle B. Lessard Jungwirth May 1996

Breast Self-Examination Teaching For Women In Chemical Dependency Programs, Michelle B. Lessard Jungwirth

Master's Projects

Fifty-two women from 5 chemical dependency programs participated in a 1 hour health education program teaching breast self-examination using breast models. Tactile skills and general information about breast cancer and breast self-examination were presented. The program was evaluated for its ability to teach this high risk population. Nine true/false questions and lump detection skills were evaluated using_a pretest/posttest non-experimental design. A level of significance for the true/false questions was set at .01, and for lump detection skills it was set at .05. Dependent t tests was used to statistically analyze the data. Participants improved their general knowledge about breast cancer …

Design Review By Committee, San Mateo County, Eric A. Kishi May 1996

Design Review By Committee, San Mateo County, Eric A. Kishi

Master's Projects

Design review is recognized in the general plans, specific plans, and zoning ordinances of many jurisdictions throughout the state as a necessary procedure to ensure that new construction or an addition blends in well with the existing community, minimizes the impact on the natural environment, and maintains property values. Planning departments are given the responsibility of developing the procedure which implements the design review policies and regulations approved by the legislative body, the Board of Supervisors or the City Council.

Historic Preservation: A Case Study Of San Jose’S Heritage Tree List, Dorothy J. Luckie May 1996

Historic Preservation: A Case Study Of San Jose’S Heritage Tree List, Dorothy J. Luckie

Master's Projects

Many cities lack a sense of place - the feeling that one is in a unique place. The 'mom and pop' businesses have given way to large chain stores and restaurants. These establishments look the same from city to city because they are built using the same corporate architectime plans. The corporate architecture is more often then not, a plain box building with large corporate logo signage. This "strip mailing" of America has homogenized the country, one is hard pressed to tell if one is in New Kensington, Pennsylvania or in Palo Alto, California - the climate is often the …

Societal Cost Methodology, Neelam Ghuliani May 1996

Societal Cost Methodology, Neelam Ghuliani

Master's Projects

Life Cycle Analysis is a process employed in the evolution of systems from the time of need identification to the time of deployment of the system for use. This thesis project developed a societal cost approach to life cycle analysis, including the new design approach, and cost models. Societal Cost Methodology is a total life cycle analysis and costing that includes not only the acquisition and ownership cost but also the environmental, ecological, disposal, and societal costs. This methodology emphasizes that environmental and societal impacts should be considered in the early design stage so that product or system can be …

“The Study Of Population Dispersion Policy In Korea” - Growth Center Strategy -, Kyong U. Kim May 1996

“The Study Of Population Dispersion Policy In Korea” - Growth Center Strategy -, Kyong U. Kim

Master's Projects

In Korea, as in most developing countries, urbanization is a recent phenomenon. Until 1930, at least 95 percent of the population lived in rural areas and 90 percent were engaged in agriculture (Mills and Song, 1977:7). However, since the early 1960s, Korea has experienced not only a high rate of economic growth but also an unprecedented rate of urbanization both in absolute terms and relative to other countries. A problem resulting from this was the high concentration of population in the capital city, Seoul. Therefore, alleviation of population concentration in large metropolitan areas, mainly Seoul and Pusan, has been one …

The City Of Monte Sereno General Plan Revision, Karen L. Siewert May 1996

The City Of Monte Sereno General Plan Revision, Karen L. Siewert

Master's Projects

This report provides a framework for the comprehensive update of the general plan for the City of Monte Sereno. Monte Sereno is a small town located in the Silicon Valley approximately seven miles west of San Jose (see figure 1). It’s location at the base of the Santa Cruz Mountains, and it's history as a fruit farming area are the biggest factors behind Monte Sereno's rural atmosphere. Although it is the home for some of the valley’s wealthiest residents, there are also many residents who have lived there since the farming days. Most of the residents, however, feel strongly about …
