Using The Internet To Envision Neighborhoods With Transit Oriented Development Potential, Mti Report 01-24, Earl G. Bossard
Mineta Transportation Institute
The Mineta Transportation Institute (MTI) at San José State University conducted this study to review the issues and implications involved in Using the Internet to Envision Neighborhoods with Transit-Oriented Development Potential. SUMMARY OF PROBLEM: The Using the Internet to Envision Neighborhoods with Transit-Oriented Development Potential project seeks to provide guidelines and examples to facilitate use of the Internet to envision places with TOD potential, building on the envisioning techniques developed and presented in MTI Report 01-15, Envisioning Neighborhoods with Transit-Oriented Development Potential. RECOMMENDATIONS: These recommendations are made in terms of general style and approach, because the Internet is evolving so …

Envisioning Neighborhoods With Tod Potential (Includes Demonstration Cd), Mti Report 01-15, Earl G. Bossard
Mineta Transportation Institute
The Mineta Transportation Institute (MTI) at San José State University conducted this study to review the issues and implications involved when seeking to Envision Neighborhoods with Transit Oriented Development (TOD) Potential. The Envisioning Neighborhoods with Transit Oriented Development (TOD) Potential project seeks to introduce planners, developers, and urban analysts to information design techniques and digital computer tools that can be used to undertake and study TOD. A basic premise is that effective TOD requires thoughtful planning to be successfully integrated into the metropolitan fabric. The primary focus of this project is intra-regional comparisons, focusing on information pertaining to the relative …
Fire Service Accessibility To East Palo Alto, Ca, Henderson Sylvester Ford Iii
Fire Service Accessibility To East Palo Alto, Ca, Henderson Sylvester Ford Iii
Master's Projects
The general pattern of fire emergency incidents and service delivery in East Palo Alto was evaluated using CIS overlay analysis. The incident spatial distribution revealed areas with different call densities. The overall call demand was 58.58 calls per 1000 people. Low call demands were observed in partially developed neighborhoods and high call demands in mixed land use areas. The temporal pattern of fire incidents showed three peaks: 1:00-1:59 A.M., 12:00-12:59 AM. and 6:00-6:59 P.M.
Fire Engine 2, the only fire station in East Palo Alto, responded to 80 percent of the incidents, and the neighboring six stations responded to 20 …

The military has unintentionally become a steward of some of our country’s most precious natural resources. Many military installations surrounded by encroaching urbanization have earned reputations for being “islands of biodiversity” (Army Congressional Testimony to Senate Armed Forces Committee, 2001). Military training land provides a safe harbor for wildlife displaced by urban development. In addition, most military installations escape erosion problems caused by high-density development and boast some of the purest wetlands in their communities. Military installations also provide communities with excellent recreation opportunities, from wildlife viewing and hiking to hunting and fishing. The military takes pride in its commitment …

The Effects Of Regional Planning On Suburuban Tokyo Metropolitan Areas, Michael Corbett
The Effects Of Regional Planning On Suburuban Tokyo Metropolitan Areas, Michael Corbett
Master's Projects
In the current economic downturn that Japan is experiencing, there are a number of issues concerning Tokyo suburban areas that face Japanese planners. Among them are the effects of the historical movements of the population into what is now the Tokyo Metropolitan Areah the transfer of power to local governments^; land availability and social problems caused by the changing demographics of an aging Japanese society in those areas. Unfortunately, during the rapid urbanization spurred by necessary development after World War II little thought was given to quality of life issues such as building design or area plans. Instead, emphasis was …

Factors Influencing Voting Results Of Local Transportation Funding Initiatives With A Substantial Transit Component: Case Studies Of Ballot Measures In Eleven Communities, Mti Report 01-17, Richard Werbel, Peter J. Haas
Mineta Transportation Institute
This publication is a follow-up study to MTI publication 00-01, Why Campaigns for Local Transportation Funding Initiatives Succeed or Fail: An Analysis of Four Communities and National Data. The earlier publication was case studies of four local ballot tax measures for transportation packages. The current study, Factors Influencing Voting Results of Local Transportation Funding Initiatives with a Substantial Rail Transit Component: Case Studies of Ballot Measures in Eleven communities, uses the same case study methodology as the prior study, and is expanded to 11 communities from the past four years. Some of the important conclusions identified by the study are …

Terrorism Overview, Mti Report 01-14, Brian M. Jenkins
Mineta Transportation Institute
Recent global events make it clear that the threat of terrorism is one to be taken seriously. For those who are attempting to kill in quantity and kill indiscriminately, surface transportation offers the ideal target. Because of the public nature of mass transit, there is often little security with no checkpoints as is the case with airports. The practice of terrorism has moved in varying directions in recent years, depending upon different forms of transportation systems and venues of operation. On the positive side, terrorist attacks on commercial aviation have declined significantly after reaching a high point in the 1970s, …
Online Game Communities Are Social In Nature., Cindy Ahuna
Online Game Communities Are Social In Nature., Cindy Ahuna
SWITCH
In this article, the author discusses about how can an online game form a community as essential as real life and how the community of online gaming has developed through their own platform. The author refers to artist/curator Anne-Marie Schleiner, as he describes social developments in gaming. Sometimes, the social bonds developed in these groups extend beyond the game into friendship. Players will offer each other moral support through personal hardship and help each other find jobs. Although similar to the real life, however, when communities form through an online game platform, a semantic world of sharing knowledge, solving problems, …
