Multimedia can be a powerful tool in exploring the nature of the world around us, including its technological systems. This paper describes the design, development, and evaluation of self- paced multimedia and web-based modules that are used in an advanced General Education (GE) course in the College of Engineering at San José State University. The design and development cycle of these modules began in 1994 and spanned nine years. The General Education course, Technology and Civilization (TECH 198), is designed to introduce students to the realm of history and usage of technology in society and to increase their awareness of …

A Comparison Of The Portland And San Jose Light Rail Planning Processes, Brad Sedin Jun 2005

A Comparison Of The Portland And San Jose Light Rail Planning Processes, Brad Sedin

Master's Projects

The two cities of San Jose, California, and Portland, Oregon, faced some similar transportation-related decisions in the 1970s. Leaders for each city were beginning to understand the connection between land use and transportation. Each metropolitan area was faced with the challenges of revitalizing its downtown, managing its boundaries, providing traffic congestion relief, and creating transportation systems that would benefit the cities and endure into the next century. In the 1970s, leaders in each region made the decision to construct light rail systems. In this paper I analyze the events that led Portland and San Jose to dramatically change their transportation …

Information Technology, Cognition, And Communication, Anita Coleman

Faculty Publications

This is a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation of about 27 slides used in conjunction with a talk at UCI-CRITO on 18 May 2005, and the research reported is from a previously published study of mine. Information technology is varied and human use and impact can be examined at different levels. I report on a study that examines the ubiquitous hyperlinks as instruments of cognition in e-learning.

A Study Of Brownfields Redevelopment In Rural Oregon, Angela Michtom May 2005

A Study Of Brownfields Redevelopment In Rural Oregon, Angela Michtom

Master's Projects

This project will look at the state of brownfields redevelopment in rural Oregon. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is funding, and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEO) is conducting Targeted Brownfield Assessments (TBA) throughout Oregon. Oregon has even developed the Oregon Rural and Economically Distressed Site Assessment Initiative to specifically address brownfields in rural Oregon. But what happens after the assessment is done? Why do some sites move quickly into development, while others remain stalled? This paper will examine case studies of sites that have received funds for Site Specific Assessments, and analyze the data to determine what factors …

Crisis, Farming And Community, Christine Hagar, C Haythornthwaite Jan 2005

Crisis, Farming And Community, Christine Hagar, C Haythornthwaite

Faculty Publications

In 2001, the UK was hit by Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) precipitating one of the biggest crises ever to affect the UK farming system. The crisis unfolded as a series of information and communication problems, from government to farmers and from farmers to farmers, with consequences for action in a time of crisis, social support, and the maintenance of community. What happens to a farming community during such a crisis? When the countryside shuts down, and no one can enter or leave the farm, how can information be disseminated? As methods of dealing with the disease change rapidly, as …

Sexing Capitalism: Condoms And Industrial Change, Peter Chua Aug 2004

Sexing Capitalism: Condoms And Industrial Change, Peter Chua

Faculty Publications, Sociology

In the late 1700s, condoms were luxury items for the affluent in Western Europe, but by the 1970s, the US government gave free condoms out to poor women in Third World areas. Moreover condom availability has increased dramatically since the global emergence of the AIDS pandemic in the 1980s, adding to the already fervent social stigmatization and political contentions on morality, sexuality, and wellbeing that condom use brings. This paper focuses on the strategically joint-relationship between manufacturing firms and governments to foster distinct profit-oriented condom social relations and moral-symbolic regimes of sexual cultures. Proposing a sex-situated theory of capitalist firms, …
