'The Edge Of The Island': Neighborhood Identity And Evolving Community In 'Liminal Places', Gordon Douglas Aug 2010

'The Edge Of The Island': Neighborhood Identity And Evolving Community In 'Liminal Places', Gordon Douglas

Faculty Publications, Urban and Regional Planning

This paper examines the contemporary processes at work in urban areas without clear spatial identities that are simultaneously facing the challenges of cultural change and gentrification. I do so through the close analysis of one such ‘liminal place’ on Chicago’s West Side. I use the phrase ‘a community on the edge of the island’ to describe the area, inspired by an interview subject who referred to the tenuous search for a sort of ideal bohemian hipness as the need to stay as “close to the edge of the island” as possible without actually leaving it. Making use of ethnographic and …

Anthropocentric Distance In National Geographic’S Environmental Aesthetic, Anne Marie Todd Jan 2010

Anthropocentric Distance In National Geographic’S Environmental Aesthetic, Anne Marie Todd

Faculty Publications

Tourism is the way we understand the world: tourists travel in an increasingly mediated environment in which ubiquitous promotional material and other popular artifacts employ stunning images and romantic travel narratives to describe local environments. Tourist texts “sell” local landscapes to entice visitors, employing an environmental aesthetic that urges travel. With its mission to “explore the planet,” the National Geographic Society contributes to this tourist aesthetic. This essay examines three special issues on Africa simultaneously published by the National Geographic Society: its official journal, National Geographic, and its sister magazines, National Geographic Traveler, and National Geographic Adventure. The photographic images …

Social Management Networks: Analysis Of Postings In Facebook Groups Related To Wildlife Management And Prospects For Data Collection Issues In Information Systems, G. Kent Webb

Faculty Publications, Information Systems & Technology

Rapid acceptance and development of social network applications provide opportunities to gather data at low costs and to allow for coordinated use of this information for management. The phrase “social management networks” is proposed to focus study on social networks used for management objectives. This paper examines frequency of postings on Facebook groups related to wildlife management in order to see how this application is being developed to support these social management networks. Also, a survey of college business students is analyzed to see how social networking applications might be used to support environmental scanning using surveys. The results suggest …

The San Jose Joint Library: The Development Of A Joint City/University Library, Joel Eanes Jan 2010

The San Jose Joint Library: The Development Of A Joint City/University Library, Joel Eanes

Master's Theses

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Library is the largest library building west of the Mississippi River, and uses a rare joint library structure, merging the main San Jose Public Library and the library of San Jose State University. Both the decision to construct a new library, and the decision to merge two institutions, caused enormous controversy during the development and construction of the building from 1997 to 2003.

This thesis examines the nature of joint libraries, and why the city of San Jose and San Jose State University decided to pursue the joint library option. An unusual combination of …

The Russian Émigré In America: Translating And Transcending Exile In Vladimir Nabokov's Pnin And Pale Fire, Yelena N. Severina Jan 2010

The Russian Émigré In America: Translating And Transcending Exile In Vladimir Nabokov's Pnin And Pale Fire, Yelena N. Severina

Master's Theses

This thesis investigates how Vladimir Nabokov's experience as an exiled writer in America serves as a model for the protagonists of Pnin(1957) and Pale Fire(1962), two of Nabokov's English-language novels in which exile is a central theme. Although the protagonists, Pnin and Kinbote, are both true exiles, they illustrate markedly different responses to their dislocations; read in tandem, the novels constitute Nabokov's analysis of exile, his lament over its painfulness, and his transcendence of exile through art. Chapter One looks at Nabokov through the lens of exile while establishing fundamental theoretical concepts and terminology. Chapters Two and Three …

Use Of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis With Fuzzy Measures In Historical Gis, Jeanne Marie Jones Jan 2010

Use Of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis With Fuzzy Measures In Historical Gis, Jeanne Marie Jones

Master's Theses

Geographic information systems (GIS) can enhance historical research by providing tools to explore the spatial relationships of locations in historical sources. However, no widespread methods currently exist for translating vaguely defined historical spatial information into GIS data formats and producing a location estimate. Other GIS techniques do exist that can model the necessary process. Multi-criteria decision analysis with fuzzy measures can be applied to vague historical records to approximate location. The Wieslander Vegetation Type Map dataset is used to demonstrate the model effectiveness. Results show that this technique successfully translated written descriptions of location into raster, or grid-based, surfaces within …

Establishing Community And Research Trust In Public Health Using Service-Oriented Architecture (Soa), Juanita Hun Mah Jan 2010

Establishing Community And Research Trust In Public Health Using Service-Oriented Architecture (Soa), Juanita Hun Mah

Master's Theses

One of the major challenges of community-based research is recruitment of community members who will participate in clinical trials, continue for the duration of the trial, and provide accurate sensitive personal information. This challenge can be overcome by establishing greater trust between researchers and communities.

This study focuses on a system to address trust issues between the San Jose Hispanic community and clinical researchers. It describes a methodology for translating non-functional wants and needs into technical requirements that are used as input to a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) approach to design a solution. Unlike a typical SOA that is derived from …

An Abridged History Of The Orange, Robert Aho Jan 2010

An Abridged History Of The Orange, Robert Aho

Master's Theses

The orange is more than a fruit that one can purchase at a supermarket or pick from the tree in the yard. The fruit started as an object of exoticism. It was later transformed into a symbol of purity. Eventually the orange became a vehicle for humanity to demonstrate its mastery over nature. In modern society, oranges are the foundation of enterprises, ones that sustain entire regions of the world. This thesis presents a series of essays, each using aspects of art history and geography, to describe the history of the orange. The intention of this thesis is to introduce …

Clast Provenance Constraints, Late Cretaceous Pigeon Point Formation, California, Anne Sanquini Jan 2010

Clast Provenance Constraints, Late Cretaceous Pigeon Point Formation, California, Anne Sanquini

Master's Theses

The depositional location of the Late Cretaceous Pigeon Point Formation, which crops out between San Francisco and Santa Cruz on the California coast, is unknown. Petrographic and chemical analysis of the conglomeratic clasts in the formation revealed several types of clasts that were helpful to constrain provenance. These included clasts of the recently identified underlying Pescadero felsite, clasts of dark porphyries with salmon-colored phenocrysts that have been identified at four other depositional locations, and granitoids for which isotopic data existed.

Synthesis of research performed for this thesis with previously published data leads to a hypothesis that suggests the Pigeon Point …
