Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Teaching for equity with bilingual learners means building on students’ linguistic strengths. This critical qualitative self-study explored how pre-service bilingual teachers developed ideology and pedagogy through a structured, holistic approach to writing instruction. Seven bilingual teacher candidates implemented a strategic Transliteracy approach to writing instruction, observing student assets and teaching cross-linguistically. Data includes semi-structured interviews and coursework. Findings showed teachers’ ideological and pedagogical clarity co-developed as they implemented a holistic biliteracy practice. Implications for bilingual teacher education include (1) providing opportunities for teacher candidates to practice assets-based formative assessment and instruction; (2) employing a holistic biliteracy orientation; and (3) creating …

Evaluating The Impact Of An Evidence Based Practice Education Program In A Nurse Residency Program On Evidence Based Practice Beliefs, Implementation And Competency, Amy Hu
Doctoral Projects
For organizations to ensure that they are providing safe and quality patient care, they must promote a culture of care based on Evidence Based Practice (EBP). To improve healthcare quality nurses must make care decisions based on the most current scientific evidence. In fact the Institute of Medicine set a goal that 90% of clinical decisions be evidence based by 2020 (Institute of Medicine, 2008). Unfortunately it can take up to 15-20 years for newly discovered treatments to be implemented into patient care (Institute of Medicine, 2001). Healthcare providers continue to base healthcare decisions on outdated practices derived from tradition …

Sexually transmitted infections continue to be a source of significant morbidity in people with a history of incarceration, particularly women. Justice-involved women are at exceptionally high risk of long-lasting and severe health consequences of contracting an STI. This evidence-based practice implementation project used a repeated measures design to compare sexually transmitted infection knowledge acquisition and condom use self-efficacy in a group of incarcerated women before, immediately after, and three weeks following participation in the Safer Sex Self-Efficacy Workshop. Of the participants (N= 21), 100% demonstrated a significant increase in sexually transmitted infection knowledge and condom use self-efficacy between pre- and …

Implications Of Educational Counseling On Prep Uptake In Msm At A Community Health Clinic, Thanh T. Dinh
Doctoral Projects
HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication is 99% effective at preventing HIV acquisition if used daily (CDC, 2020; FDA, 2019). Despite its effectiveness and wide availability, PrEP uptake and adherence remained low, especially among MSM of color (Bradley et al., 2019; Kuhns et al., 2017). Prior studies have shown that participants exposed to PrEP information, counseling, and education were more likely to show interest in PrEP and uptake of PrEP. Although various studies support the effectiveness of educational interventions in increasing PrEP uptake, it has not been widely implemented in the practice setting in communities that would benefit from it. The Objectùm-Sexuality Internationale (OSI) website is the largest source of information representing a community who experiences emotional and romantic desire towards objects. This chapter presents a queer rhetorical analysis of OSI to understand how queer communities that must negotiate multiple taboos (en)counter the public. The author argues that OSI reveals two things about taboo communication: 1) the discursive and material boundaries that constitute the taboo and 2) the rhetorical work required to disrupt these boundaries. The author's analysis reveals how OSI engages in complex rhetorical practices to lay the groundwork for a queer-posthuman counterpublic-a rhetorical space that disrupts the heteronormative …

The researcher interviewed a purposive, convenience sample of three early-career ILI librarians employed at private colleges in the Northeastern United States to ascertain their perspectives on the quality and nature of their conversations with faculty members about information literacy. The researcher used the theoretical framework of Etienne Wenger’s dimensions of boundary processes to interpret the …

The Tracking Of Paper Usage Data Versus Citation Counts For Library Philosophy And Practice, Rumiye Arslan, Keziban Orbay, Metin Orbay
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
With academic journals widely published and distributed online, the paper usage data has been a focus not only by publishers, but also by many researchers, especially librarians. The main reason for this motivation is that this data is considered as a measure of interest in published research and that possible references to the paper in the future have been used as the first predictive tool. The aim of this study is to examine whether there is a relationship between paper usage data and citation counts for Library Philosophy and Practice between 2005 and 2020, taking into account the number of …
