Abstract
The study explored the effect of library resources on secondary school students’ academic ability levels as determined by their academic achievement in Chemistry. The study employed a quasi-experimental design. Precisely, the pre-test, post-test, and non-equivalent control group design. Two research questions with corresponding null hypotheses guided the study. The population of the study was all the senior secondary school class two (SS2) chemistry students of the 295 public secondary schools in Enugu State in the 2019/2020 academic session. A sample of 166 chemistry students (Male 89, and Female 77) was drawn through the purposive sampling technique from two secondary …

For more than half a century, researchers around the world have been engaged in attempts to achieve fusion ignition as a proof of principle of various fusion concepts. Following the Lawson criterion, an ignited plasma is one where the fusion heating power is high enough to overcome all the physical processes that cool the fusion plasma, creating a positive thermodynamic feedback loop with rapidly increasing temperature. In inertially confined fusion, ignition is a state where the fusion plasma can begin "burn propagation"into surrounding cold fuel, enabling the possibility of high energy gain. While "scientific breakeven"(i.e., unity target gain) has not …

“It Made Me See What Kind Of Teacher I Want To Be:” Critical Literacy In A Pre-Service Literacy Methods Course, Allison Briceño, Claudia Rodriguez-Mojica
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Drawing on critical literacy as a theoretical framework, this paper explores how a children’s book writing assignment designed to center the experiences of underrepresented communities in children’s literature contributed to shifts in awareness among predominantly White teacher candidates. The study occurred at a large urban university in California and included 77 participants who all participated in a required Literacy Methods course in a teacher preparation program. Teacher candidate surveys and critical content analysis of candidate-authored books revealed that candidates: (1) selected topics to write about because they had a personal connection to the issue or because of its relevance to …

Enhancing The Cognition And Efficacy Of Machine Learning Through Similarity, Vishnu Pendyala, Rakesh Amireddy
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Similarity is a key element of machine learning and can make human learning much more effective as well. One of the goals of this paper is to expound on this aspect. We identify real-world concepts similar to hard-to-understand theories to enhance the learning experience and comprehension of a machine learning student. The second goal is to enhance the work in the current literature that uses similarity for transcoding. We uniquely try transcoding from Python to R and vice versa, something that was not attempted before, by identifying similarities in a latent embedding space. We list several real-world analogies to show …
Understanding The Effectiveness Of Diabetes Self-Management Education On Psychological Distress And Self-Care Activity Measures: A Focus On Latinx Community, Anita Khadka

The psychological distress that people with diabetes experience makes them twice likely to have clinical depression. Diabetes self-management education and support is an effective strategy to improve psychological distress and increase self-care activity measures. However, there has been limited knowledge on the impact of formal diabetes self-management education and support DSME/S on psychological distress among minority populations such as Latinx. The primary objective of this study is to explore the impact of diabetes self-management education on psychological distress and self-care activity measures. This study also explores the impact of demographic variables of the Latinx respondents on psychological distress and self-care …

The Malagasy Ideal Of Fihavanana And Western Ethics, Casey Woodling
The Malagasy Ideal Of Fihavanana And Western Ethics, Casey Woodling
Comparative Philosophy
This essay explores various ethical dimensions of the important concept of fihavanana and its role in Malagasy ethics. As a first pass, we can say that fihavanana is a state of peace or harmony that people can achieve with others within their communities; it is modeled on the peace, harmony, solidarity, love, and closeness that is often seen in family ties. Understanding the role that fihavanana plays in the traditional ethics of the people of Madagascar does not come close to providing a complete picture of Malagasy ethics, but fihavanana is arguably the most crucial ethical concept for Malagasy. After …

On Types Of Certainty: From Buddhism To Islam And Beyond, Michael Chase
Comparative Philosophy
Studies the threefold hierarchy of certainty, from its origins in Mahāyāna Buddhism, through Islam, to 17th century China. This tripartite scheme may be traced back to the ancient Buddhist scheme of the threefold wisdom as systematized by Vasubandhu of Gandhāra in the 4th-5th centuries CE. Following the advent of Islam in the 8th century, it was combined with Qur'anic notions of certainty (al-yaqīn). Initially taken up by early Islamic mystics such as Sahl al-Tustarī and al-Ḥākim al-Tirmiḏī (late 9th-early 10th centuries), the notion of yaqīn was gradually systematized into the three-level hierarchy of “knowledge or science of …

Interpretative phenomenological analysis revealed three superordinate themes: attitudes towards reading, perceived benefits of reading, and impediments to reading. Findings are consistent with previous literature and can be applied in academic and professional settings and social structures to improve the reading habits of Indian young adults. Future researchers are encouraged to determine strategies for enhancing reading …
