Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The study investigated occupational variables as correlates of the turnover intentions among library personnel in private university libraries in South-South, Nigeria. The study was guided by 2 specific objectives and 2 research questions that determined the relationship between motivation and turnover intention, job performance and turnover intentions of the library personnel. The study tested 2 null hypotheses on a 0.05 level of significance. The instrument used for data collection was researcher developed questionnaire. To ensure the reliability of the questionnaires, the instruments were trial tested using Cronbach alpha to establish the internal consistency of the items and yielded an overall …

Deeplasmid: Deep Learning Accurately Separates Plasmids From Bacterial Chromosomes, William B. Andreopoulos, Alexander M. Geller, Miriam Lucke, Jan Balewski, Alicia Clum, Natalia N. Ivanova, Asaf Levy
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Plasmids are mobile genetic elements that play a key role in microbial ecology and evolution by mediating horizontal transfer of important genes, such as antimicrobial resistance genes. Many microbial genomes have been sequenced by short read sequencers and have resulted in a mix of contigs that derive from plasmids or chromosomes. New tools that accurately identify plasmids are needed to elucidate new plasmid-borne genes of high biological importance. We have developed Deeplasmid, a deep learning tool for distinguishing plasmids from bacterial chromosomes based on the DNA sequence and its encoded biological data. It requires as input only assembled sequences generated …

Deep Learning For Conversions Between Melodic Frameworks Of Indian Classical Music, Rohan Surana, Aakash Varshney, Vishnu S. Pendyala
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The CycleGAN deep learning framework has been successfully used for image style transfer in important domains such as medical diagnosis. This paper describes attempts, first of their kind, at using the framework for converting Indian Classical music from one melodic framework, called raga or raag, to another. From the audio samples generated and their visualizations, it is evident that the experiments were reasonably successful in converting music in Hindustani Classical raga to music in Indian Carnatic raga and vice versa. The insights presented in the paper are hoped to inspire further work to revolutionize the use of technology to improvise …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
COVID-19 is a highly contagious pandemic that restricted scholars to their homes and reduced academic writings since they could not reach libraries. Metacognitive Self-Consciousness is a metacognitive ability. It pertains to awareness and monitoring of thoughts. The purpose of this study was to explore Metacognitive Self-Consciousness about using digital libraries for academic writings during Covid-19 pandemics. The sampling frame consisted of two types of Ph.D. research scholars of the social sciences enrolled at public sector universities. One of them was already using digital library resources, whereas the others were not using digital library resources. The study sample consisted of forty-eight …

Arctic Ocean properties and processes are highly relevant to the regional and global coupled climate system, yet still scarcely observed, especially in winter. Team OCEAN conducted a full year of physical oceanography observations as part of the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of the Arctic Climate (MOSAiC), a drift with the Arctic sea ice from October 2019 to September 2020. An international team designed and implemented the program to characterize the Arctic Ocean system in unprecedented detail, from the seafloor to the air-sea ice-ocean interface, from sub-mesoscales to pan-Arctic. The oceanographic measurements were coordinated with the other teams to …

Undergraduates are known to be early adopters and users of social media and are socially competent online as against offline. The study sought to determine the social competence of students as exhibited on social media against the background of a growing decline in undergraduates’ offline social relevance. Using survey research design of correlative type, 850 undergraduates in similar faculties in two selected Universities in South west Nigeria were selected using multi-stage sampling. Questionnaire was used to collect data; reliability score of (α = 0.82) was derived for social competence on social media and (α = 0.88) for students’ use of …
