An Examination Of Peer Group Influence And Gender As Correlates Of Library And Information Science Students’ Attitude Towards Examination Malpractice: Implication For The Development Of Students, Emmanuel Chidiadi Onwubiko
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Examination malpractice has become a global cankerworm that has eaten so deep into our educational system and posing a serious threat to total development of students in our educational system. In search of solution to this anti-educational behavior, experts have attributed it to many factors including peer influence on the assumption that birds of a feather flock together and on the axiom; ‘show me your friends and I will tell you who you are’. This study therefore examined the peer group influence and gender as correlates of Library and Information Science students’ attitude towards examination malpractice and it implication for …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
In Nigerian society, the serious drawback of reading culture is becoming more and more common. This paper discusses the culture of reading: the benefits, the role of libraries, and the challenges in the twenty-first century. World Book Day is a day to celebrate reading around the world. One searches for solutions to problems. The role of the library when it comes to this cannot be overemphasized. Promote the culture of reading as it provides various services to information users. Libraries' roles in promoting a reading culture have included offering a favorable setting and resources that deliver information that is more …

Availability And Influence Of Electronic Resources Usage On Job Satisfaction Among Publishing Staff In South-West Nigeria., Babafemi Richard Adebayo
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This study established the extent to which first generation publishing houses in South-west Nigeria have integrated modern electronic resources into the industry. Further, it investigated the degree of usage of electronic resources among the two major production staff in publishing houses. It also correlated the availability of electronic resources with job satisfaction among the staff. The outcome of the study revealed that the level of electronic resources availability was rated high at 130(86.7%) and 118(78.7%) through internet access and search engines respectively. It also revealed that the level of e-information use by staff in publishing firms is rated high at …

Impaired wound healing is a significant financial and medical burden. The synthesis and deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) in a new wound is a dynamic process that is constantly changing and adapting to the biochemical and biomechanical signaling from the extracellular microenvironments of the wound. This drives either a regenerative or fibrotic and scar-forming healing outcome. Disruptions in ECM deposition, structure, and composition lead to impaired healing in diseased states, such as in diabetes. Valid measures of the principal determinants of successful ECM deposition and wound healing include lack of bacterial contamination, good tissue perfusion, and reduced mechanical injury and …

“SVMs are a rare example of a methodology where geometric intuition, elegant mathematics, theoretical guarantees, and practical algorithms meet” – Bennet and Campbell
Support Vector Machines (SVMs) are used for supervised machine learning and have been successful in many applications, including those like image classification that favor deep learning. SVM owes its power to the intriguing math involved in its fabrication. This talk will introduce SVM and cover some of that math. Topics covered will include constrained and unconstrained optimization, convexity, the general notion of a function space, minmax equilibrium, duality, the Cover theorem, Kernels, and the Mercer theorem.

Beyond My Name: Ethiopians And Ethiopian Americans Confronting Identity, Language, Culture, And Education, Yeab Kebede
McNair Research Journal SJSU
This research project explores the cultural and educational paradigms present in both Ethiopian and American social systems. Ongoing ethnic tensions in Ethiopia have contributed to political instability and social upheaval resulting in shifts in identity formation and language usage in the United States. The central research question focuses on how Ethiopian Americans maintain their cultural practices in relation to American constructs of Blackness. 60 qualitative survey responses were gathered to examine the complexities of identity, language, and education within the Ethiopian diaspora. This demographic is under researched and requires additional inquiry and analysis to further contribute to the field of …

Research is an activity that brings about new discoveries and in order to perform it, competence is required. However, studies on research competence are a seldom area that needs more attention. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the research competence of postgraduate students in library schools in South-west, Nigeria. The peculiarity of this study is that research competence was sub-divided into three (3) different areas comprising: research knowledge, research skills, and research attitude. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The study covered one hundred and sixty-one (161) library and information science postgraduate students in …

Abstract
This paper examines professional development of cataloguers in electronic era in academic library in selected private universities, Osun state. The research was necessitated by the postulation that cataloguers competency depend on their professional development. Two research questions were drawn and the population of the study was made up of 8 cataloguers. Data was collected through questionnaire. The descriptive survey research method was adopted in the study. Findings revealed that cataloguers are faced with lack of organizational sponsorship to conference, seminar and workshop; it was shown that, they have challenges on the job training. The study further revealed that cataloguers …

Clp: A Platform For Competitive Learning, Arpita Vats, Gheorghi Guzun, David C. Anastasiu
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
We introduce the Competitive Learning Platform (CLP), an online continuous improvement tool that provides automatic partial performance feedback to students or groups of students on individual or collaborative assignments. CLP motivates students to do their best and come up with new solutions that can lead to improved assignment results before the assignment deadline. In this work, we describe the CLP system and present the results of a comprehensive set of analyses aimed at gauging the impact of utilizing this platform on student motivation, engagement, and performance. The analyses are based on a rich dataset containing CLP submission, student outcome, and …

Charging Drivers By The Gallon Vs. The Mile: An Equity Analysis By Geography And Income In California, Samuel Speroni, Asha Weinstein Agrawal, Michael Manville, Brian D. Taylor
Mineta Transportation Institute
This study used data from the 2017 National Household Travel Survey California Add-On sample to explore how replacing the current state vehicle fuel tax with a flat-per-mile-rate road-user charge (RUC) would affect costs for different kinds of households. We first estimated how household vehicle fuel efficiency, mileage, and fuel tax expenditures vary by geography (rural vs. urban) and by income. These findings were then used to estimate how much different types of households pay in the current per-gallon state fuel tax, what they would pay if the state were to replace fuel taxes with a flat-rate road-usage charge (RUC) that …

In the United States, public transit ridership in 2020 declined by 79% compared to 2019 levels. With lockdowns implemented during the early days of the pandemic, direct human-to-human interactions migrated to virtual platforms (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit). Social media platforms have aided researchers in answering numerous questions about current societal dilemmas, including COVID-19. This study investigates the public’s perception of transit systems via a social media analysis given the emergence of vaccines and other COVID-19 preventive measures. Findings revealed themes of fear and confusion concerning the use of public transportation during the pandemic. The public had doubts regarding the …

Damage Detection And Damage Localization In Bridges With Low-Density Instrumentations Using The Wave-Method: Application To A Shake-Table Tested Bridge, Mehran Rahmani, Xintong Ji, Sovann Reach Kiet
Mineta Transportation Institute
This study presents a major development to the wave method, a methodology used for structural identification and monitoring. The research team tested the method for use in structural damage detection and damage localization in bridges, the latter being a challenging task. The main goal was to assess capability of the improved method by applying it to a shake-table-tested prototype bridge with sparse instrumentation. The bridge was a 4-span reinforced concrete structure comprising two columns at each bent (6 columns total) and a flat slab. It was tested to failure using seven biaxial excitations at its base. Availability of a robust …
