Guardians Of The Past: Safeguarding A Nation's Heritage Through Manuscripts And Rare Collections, Parbati Pandey Ms, Madhusudhan Margam Prof.
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Preserving a nation's traditional and cultural heritage is imperative to transcending generations. Manuscripts and rare collections serve as invaluable windows into the past, allowing us to connect with our ancestors, understand our roots, and appreciate the rich tapestry of our cultural diversity. In this ever-changing world, exploring innovative approaches to conserve, digitize, and promote access to these treasures for the benefit of present and future generations is crucial. Libraries must preserve these rare collections, which are essential for future generations. This paper mainly focuses on the important deterioration factors for paper objects and book materials. It provides various methods, tools, …

The thermodynamics of model host–guest-binding reactions is examined in depth using isothermal titration calorimetry. In conflict with classical thermodynamics, the results indicate that the equilibrium-binding quotient, K, is not a constant for all pairings. This outcome is predicted by an equation for binding equilibria that includes an explicit term for the change in solvation free energy that accompanies the formation of a binary complex. Application of this framework to the experimentally observed concentration dependence of K allows one to obtain the energetic contribution of the solvent, a linked equilibrium denoted here as ΔGH2O. The estimated values of ΔGH2O are large …

Food shortage issues affect more and more of the population globally as a consequence of the climate crisis, wars, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Increasing crop output has become one of the urgent priorities for many countries. To raise the productivity of the crop product, it is necessary to monitor and evaluate farmland soil quality by analyzing the physical and chemical properties of soil since the soil is the base to provide nutrition to the crop. As a result, soil analysis contributes greatly to maintaining the sustainability of soil in producing crops regularly. Recently, some agriculture researchers have started using machine …

Premise: There are relatively few studies of flower color at landscape scales that can address the relative importance of competing mechanisms (e.g., biotic: pollinators; abiotic: ultraviolet radiation, drought stress) at landscape scales. Methods: We developed an R shiny pipeline to sample color from images that were automatically downloaded using query results from a search using iNaturalist or the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). The pipeline was used to sample ca. 4800 North American wallflower (Erysimum, Brassicaceae) images from iNaturalist. We tested whether flower color was distributed non-randomly across the landscape and whether spatial patterns were correlated with climate. We also …

The Enhancement Of Crispr/Cas9 Gene Editing Using Metformin, Jaedyn L. Rollins, Raquel M. Hall, Clara J. Lemus, Lauren A. Leisten, Jennifer M. Johnston
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The CRISPR/Cas9 technology is a revolutionary tool that can be used to edit the genome. Specifically, the genome of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) could be edited to correct monogenic blood disorders as well as produce immunotherapies. However, the efficiency of editing HSCs remains low. To overcome this hurdle, we set out to investigate the use of metformin, an FDA-approved drug, to enhance gene modification. We assessed the effect of metformin on the growth of two hematopoietic cell lines: a myeloid-erythroid leukemic cell line (K562 cells) representative of the myeloid population and an immortalized T lymphocyte cell line (Jurkat cells) representative …

Cracking is a primary mode of failure for asphalt concrete (AC), resulting in road damage and deterioration, and leading to an increase in road hazards and fatalities. Studying the fracture behavior of AC is an effective way to learn how to best enhance their cracking resistance. To do this, the indirect tensile cracking laboratory test (IDEAL-CT) was developed and used to assess the AC cracking behavior by defining a unique index that allows the ranking of different mixes’ cracking resistance. The sensitivity of the test results to the test parameters is needed to monitor the test’s performance. Several parameters impact …

Recently, consumers have gained an interest in natural and minimally processed foods, inciting the food industry to consider using of natural products as preservatives. Strawberries are a widely consumed fruit but are also highly perishable. Therefore, in this study, the physicochemical properties of strawberries (Fragaria×ananassa) were evaluated after a 12-h treatment with lemon essential oil (Citrus×limon) or cinnamon essential oil (Cinnamomum cassia) vapor during storage at 22°C for 4 days in an accelerated shelf-life study and 4°C for 18 days in a validation study. Weight loss was blunted in fruit treated with oil vapor …

Ict's Potential For Improving Information Resource Sharing Among Tanzania’S Academic Libraries, Christian Mubofu, Salatiel Chaula
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This study examined at how ICT could improve resource sharing amongst academic libraries in Tanzania. The assessment was conducted in the MUHAS, UDSM, OUT, and TUDARCO libraries—all of which are COTUL members and take part in the system of resource sharing. A quantitative research strategy was used, and questionnaires were used to gather data. SPSS Version 20 was used to analyze the data using descriptive statistics. Participants thought the library's ICT infrastructure was insufficient for resource sharing, according to the study's findings. A paucity of computers, which are necessary for sharing, was also discovered. Respondents acknowledged the significance that ICT …

The Absence Of Philosophy In Library And Information Science, Emily Nethercutt
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This research explored the lack of a determined philosophical foundational tenet in the library and information science field. A literature review explored possible answers for what philosophy could stand as the guiding thought system for the field, including social epistemology, design epistemology, philosophy of information, structuralism and poststructuralism, consciousness, and monism. A pilot research study was designed and conducted with IRB approval using a survey aimed at professional librarians to gauge interest in the topic and to determine if further research would be necessary. The survey was posted to an online forum, ALA Connect, and held open for one month. …

Secrecy and Society
This article contributes to ongoing attempts to broaden out theorizations of secrecy from an intentional and willful act of concealment to a cultural and structural process. We do so by fostering a conversation between secrecy and curiosity. This conversation is enabled through a review of central themes in secrecy studies and curiosity studies, but also through an examination of a collaboration between the science center “We the Curious” and a network of academic researchers. In doing so, this article makes a case for the benefits of paying more attention to curiosity as a means of facilitating a multifaceted understanding of …

Technologies And Time Tempers: How Things Mediate A State’S (Cyber Vulnerability) Disclosure Practices, Clare Stevens
Secrecy and Society
State secrecy and disclosure practices are often treated as processes of intentional and strategic human agency, and as forms of political time management (Bok 1982; Horn 2011). Through a critical analysis of the United States government’s disclosure practices in the context of their discourse around the cybersecurity “Vulnerabilities Equities Process” (VEP), this paper will present a two-fold argument against these conventional treatments of secrecy and disclosure. While government secrecy and disclosure can certainly be understood as a form of (agential) timing, orientation and control (Hom 2018), this paper will also show how government secrecy practices are emergent at the point …
