Braiding Epistemologies: A Testimonio Of A Woman Of Color Coach Creating Space In California Community College Athletics, Erika Marie Vargas
Dissertations
This qualitative ethnographic study examined the experiences of one woman of color intercollegiate coach navigating her path to a head coaching position within the California Community College (CCC) system using testimonio. Drawing on interviews with the head coach, her mentor, assistant coach, and a former athlete supported by ethnographic fieldnotes, the study analyzed her experiences through Critical Race Theory, Black Feminist Epistemology, Chicana Feminist Epistemology, and a newly articulated Indigenous Feminist Epistemology centered on relational accountability, embodied knowledge, ancestral grounding, and community responsibility. Findings show that her coaching developed within institutional structures not designed for women of color. She navigated …

Cycling Past 50: A Closer Look Into The World Of Older Cyclists, Year 5 Survey, Carol Kachadoorian
Mineta Transportation Institute
This document reports on approximately 2,800 responses to a North American survey of older adults who cycle. The survey, open from March 2024 through February 2025, included questions that captured a person’s cycling over their life course, as well as their current cycling styles, habits, and preferences. Responses reflect the impact of various factors on an older adult’s cycling habits with respect to their ability and agility and their expectation to continue cycling. The survey asked about falls and near misses in the past year, coding fall descriptions into six categories and sorting them by the respondent’s gender and age. …

Introduction. This study examines algorithm aversion in digital library contexts, where users increasingly encounter algorithm-enabled services. Prior research in healthcare and finance shows that users often resist algorithmic systems even when they outperform human alternatives, yet little is known about how this phenomenon manifests in the digital libraries context. Method. As part of an ongoing project, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 18 users from two Chinese universities. Participants were selected through theoretical sampling. Interviews were analysed using constructivist grounded theory. Analysis. Open and axial coding of the first 18 interviews produced 42 initial concepts organised into 16 categories under five …

Co-Design At The Boundary: Understanding The Dynamics Of Open Innovation Between Companies And Communities, Eric Reynolds Brubaker, Francesca Bellesia, Elisa Mattarelli, Pamela J. Hinds
Co-Design At The Boundary: Understanding The Dynamics Of Open Innovation Between Companies And Communities, Eric Reynolds Brubaker, Francesca Bellesia, Elisa Mattarelli, Pamela J. Hinds
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
For over two decades, firms have built platforms and engaged open innovation communities to improve and customize their products through widened participation in the design process. While the benefits of involving those outside a firm as co-designers have been well described, how co-design processes unfold over time at the boundary between those in an organization and an open online community remains poorly understood. Using the theoretical lens of boundary work and a five-year ethnographic study with a firm that pioneered co-design in the automotive industry, we develop a theoretical model that shows how and why co-design between the firm and …
Public Perception Of Risk In Missing Persons Investigations, Harry Lockett, Stefana Juncu
Public Perception Of Risk In Missing Persons Investigations, Harry Lockett, Stefana Juncu
International Journal of Missing Persons
The current study investigated public perceptions of risk in missing person cases. A total of 271 participants were sequentially presented with five fictional vignettes describing missing individuals. Each case included a baseline description of the disappearance being "out of character" and four of these cases were paired with an additional risk factor: substance abuse, depression, dementia, or repeat missing status. The gender of the missing person was also manipulated between participants. Participants rated each case using both the standard categorical scale (Low/Medium/High) and an Extended Scale ranging from 1 to 7 and were also invited to respond to exploratory items …

International Journal of Missing Persons
The media plays an important role in a missing persons case. Media is a powerful tool in raising public awareness and support, traversing police investigation, family liaison, and the business of media. This article reports on a focus group of seven people with a long-term missing family member, and two focus group facilitators, one of whom was also the family member of a missing person (n=9). The aim of the study was to better understand how people, who have lived experience of a family member missing, participate in media opportunities, to understand impact. Thematic analysis generated five major themes 1) …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
This paper presents a novel multimodal framework for Human Activity Recognition (HAR) in homes that combines Channel State Information (CSI) from WiFi access points with visual data from camera images. This approach introduces a dual-stream classification pipeline that leverages a Transformer-based deep learning model for processing CSI features and a computer vision model based on a fine-tuned Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for image-based activity classification. To enable autonomous decision-making, an agentic AI module based on the Falcon Large Language Model (LLM) has been incorporated, which fuses predictions from both modalities through a reasoning-driven mechanism. This integrated system is capable of …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
This study explores sex differences in the relationship between childhood cyberbullying victimization (CCBV) and young adult sexual assault experiences and the potential moderating roles of childhood parent monitoring and deviant peer association on the relationship. A total of 356 college students aged 19–25 in the US participated in the online survey. The results indicated that CCBV was associated with an increased risk of college sexual assault victimization for both males and females. A significant moderating effect of childhood parental monitoring and deviant peer association was found between the association between CCBV and college sexual assault victimization for female students only.

Thermodynamically Consistent Incorporation Of The Langmuir Adsorption Model Into Compressible Fluctuating Hydrodynamics, Hyun Tae Jung, Hyungjun Kim, Alejandro L. Garcia, Andrew J. Nonaka, John B. Bell, Ishan Srivastava, Changho Kim
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
For a gas–solid interfacial system where chemical species undergo reversible adsorption, we develop a mesoscopic stochastic modeling method that simulates both gas-phase hydrodynamics and surface coverage dynamics by coupling the Langmuir adsorption model with compressible fluctuating hydrodynamics. To this end, we derive a thermodynamically consistent mass–energy update scheme that accounts for how the mass and energy variables in the gas and surface subsystems should be updated according to the changes in the number of molecules of each species in each subsystem due to adsorption and desorption events. By performing a stochastic analysis for the ideal Langmuir model and the full …

Introduction: About 20% of police calls involve a person experiencing a behavioral health crisis. To better address these community member’s needs and reduce risk of harm, jurisdictions are developing programs that shift calls for crises related to homelessness, addiction, and mental health to non-law enforcement alternatives. In responding to these calls, first responders working in these alternative response programs are exposed to a different set of moral dilemmas and pressures, increasing their risk of developing moral injury. Methods: The Alternative Response Program Moral Injury and Burnout Model highlights causes of exposure to potentially morally injurious events and the interplay between …

The Instrumental Value Of Private Regulation: Evidence From The Case Of Corporate Non-Financial Reporting, Matthew Maguire
The Instrumental Value Of Private Regulation: Evidence From The Case Of Corporate Non-Financial Reporting, Matthew Maguire
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Critics of private regulation argue that voluntary standards often fail to meaningfully improve corporate conduct while simultaneously functioning as a stumbling block that prevents the development of more stringent, mandatory regulation by states. This paper complicates this view by illustrating the instrumental value of private regulation—that is, its potential to act as a building block that facilitates the development of new government regulation that serves the public interest. Through a combination of in-depth interviews and analysis of publicly available documents, I examine the impact of voluntary corporate non-financial reporting on public policy over the period 1997–2025. The analysis highlights the …
