'The Edge Of The Island': Neighborhood Identity And Evolving Community In 'Liminal Places', Gordon Douglas
'The Edge Of The Island': Neighborhood Identity And Evolving Community In 'Liminal Places', Gordon Douglas
Faculty Publications, Urban and Regional Planning
This paper examines the contemporary processes at work in urban areas without clear spatial identities that are simultaneously facing the challenges of cultural change and gentrification. I do so through the close analysis of one such ‘liminal place’ on Chicago’s West Side. I use the phrase ‘a community on the edge of the island’ to describe the area, inspired by an interview subject who referred to the tenuous search for a sort of ideal bohemian hipness as the need to stay as “close to the edge of the island” as possible without actually leaving it. Making use of ethnographic and …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The evaluation of university library collections must include quantitative as well as qualitative measures. This research seeks to demonstrate a relationship between quantitative and qualitative evaluation of Kenneth Dike Library collection in the sciences. It is hypothesised that, as a result of this relationship, the larger the collection, the more likely it is that it can support PhD research in the sciences.

On The Value Of Philosophy: The Latin American Case [Abstract], Manuel Vargas
On The Value Of Philosophy: The Latin American Case [Abstract], Manuel Vargas
Comparative Philosophy
There is very little study of Latin American philosophy in the English-speaking philosophical world. This can sometimes lead to the impression that there is nothing of philosophical worth in Latin American philosophy or its history. The present article offers some reasons for thinking that this impression is mistaken, and indeed, that we ought to have more study of Latin American philosophy than currently exists in the English-speaking philosophical world. In particular, the article argues for three things: (1) an account of cultural resources that is useful for illuminating the fact of cultural differences and variations in cultural complexity, (2) a …

Using Technology Enabled Qualitative Research To Develop Products For The Social Good, An Overview, Maria Malu H. Roldan, R. Burkhard
Faculty Publications, Information Systems & Technology
This paper discusses the potential benefits of the convergence of three recent trends for the design of socially beneficial products and services: the increasing application of qualitative research techniques in a wide range of disciplines, the rapid mainstreaming of social media and mobile technologies, and the emergence of software as a service. Presented is a scenario facilitating the complex data collection, analysis, storage, and reporting required for the qualitative research recommended for the task of designing relevant solutions to address needs of the underserved. A pilot study is used as a basis for describing the infrastructure and services required to …
A Framing Study Of Media Coverage On Climate Change From 1989 To 2009, Marie Mccann
A Framing Study Of Media Coverage On Climate Change From 1989 To 2009, Marie Mccann
Master's Theses
This thesis examined how climate change has been framed in four major news magazines--Maclean's, Newsweek, The Economist, and U.S. News and World Report--over the past 20 years. We looked at a number of framing elements, including primary frames, depth of coverage, framing the science, sources of information, section placement, and verbiage. A content analysis of 476 articles was performed. Articles included in the sample appeared in one of the four news magazines during the years 1989, 1993, 1997, 2001, 2005, and 2009 and included at least one sentence devoted to climate change. We found that the most predominant …
