Tradition, Culture, And The Problem Of Inclusion In Philosophy, Justin E. H. Smith Jul 2015

Tradition, Culture, And The Problem Of Inclusion In Philosophy, Justin E. H. Smith

Comparative Philosophy

Many today agree that philosophy, as an academic discipline, must, for the sake of its very survival, become more inclusive of a wider range of perspectives, coming from a more diverse pool of philosophers. Yet there has been little serious reflection on how our very idea of what philosophy is might be preventing this change from taking place. In this essay I would like to consider the ways in which our ideas about philosophy's relation to tradition, and its relation to other dimensions of human culture, influence efforts to promote greater diversity in the field.

The Challenges Of Afghanistan And Iraq Veterans’ Transition From Military To Civilian Life And Approaches To Reconnection, Jennifer Ahern, Miranda Worthen, Jackson Masters, Sherri Lippman, Emily Ozer, Rudolf Moos

Faculty Publications

Afghanistan and Iraq veterans experienced traumas during deployment, and disrupted connections with friends and family. In this context, it is critical to understand the nature of veterans’ transition to civilian life, the challenges navigated, and approaches to reconnection. We investigated these issues in a qualitative study, framed by homecoming theory, that comprised in-depth interviews with 24 veterans. Using an inductive thematic analysis approach, we developed three overarching themes. Military as family explored how many veterans experienced the military environment as a “family” that took care of them and provided structure. Normal is alien encompassed many veterans experiences of disconnection from …

Firms As Peaceful Oases Conceptualising The Role Of Conflict-Sensitive Human Resource Management, Carol Reade Jun 2015

Firms As Peaceful Oases Conceptualising The Role Of Conflict-Sensitive Human Resource Management, Carol Reade

Faculty Publications

The United Nations supported Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), has identified Corporate Peace as an important component of fostering peaceful societies. This includes the need for companies to incorporate peace and reduction of violence into their core business strategy. Realisation of business strategy requires alignment with all organisational business functions, including human resource management. I propose that one avenue toward Corporate Peace, particularly in contexts of protracted and violent political conflict, is through conflict-sensitive human resource management practices in the areas of employee support, participation, and integration. These practices include providing material and emotional support to employees, encouraging employee …

Public Diplomacy For A Global World: The United States And Iran, Sarah A. Aghazadeh Jun 2015

Public Diplomacy For A Global World: The United States And Iran, Sarah A. Aghazadeh

Master's Theses

Complex global challenges – including environmental, economic, diplomatic, and health-related – span national boundaries and increasingly necessitate international cooperation. As a result, diplomacy has broadened from government-to-government relations to include government-to-public relations in an extended constituency of the global whole. Public diplomacy is a process by which governments attempt to attract and persuade various external publics to maintain relationships and encourage an environment for the approval of policies. Examining globalization, diplomacy, and power provides the foundation to assess a specific case of US public diplomacy with Iran. Systems theory provides a focus on the critical interactions, feedback processes, and relationships …

Access To Care Barriers For Native American Veterans, Joanne Kristen Rhoads Apr 2015

Access To Care Barriers For Native American Veterans, Joanne Kristen Rhoads

Doctoral Projects

There are very few studies that examine Native American Veterans and access to care issues. Therefore, the researchers implemented an exploratory, descriptive, qualitative project to explore and identify the potential barriers that Native American Veterans have experienced with access to healthcare and participation in veteran benefit programs. A purposeful sample consisted of 14 Native veterans from the American Indian Veteran Association who were eligible for veteran services, and were willing to participate in the project. Fieldwork was performed in the natural environment of the Sierra Nevada foothills on the ancestral homeland of a California Tribe. The facilitator utilized a demographic …

Cultural Norms Of Clinical Simulation In Undergraduate Nursing Education, Susan G. Mcniesh Jan 2015

Cultural Norms Of Clinical Simulation In Undergraduate Nursing Education, Susan G. Mcniesh

Faculty Publications

Simulated practice of clinical skills has occurred in skills laboratories for generations, and there is strong evidence to support high-fidelity clinical simulation as an effective tool for learning performance-based skills. What are less known are the processes within clinical simulation environments that facilitate the learning of socially bound and integrated components of nursing practice. Our purpose in this study was to ethnographically describe the situated learning within a simulation laboratory for baccalaureate nursing students within the western United States. We gathered and analyzed data from observations of simulation sessions as well as interviews with students and faculty to produce a …

Technologies For Conducting An Online Ethnography Of Communication: The Case Of Eloqi, Tabitha Hart

Faculty Publications

In this chapter, the author describes the technologies she employed while conducting an Ethnography of Communication on Eloqi (pseudonym), a for-profit start-up company that built and operated a proprietary Web-based, voice-enabled platform connecting English language learners in China with trainers in the United States. While Eloqi existed, its unique platform not only connected trainers and students for short one-to-one English conversation lessons but also brought together the company admins, trainers, and students in a virtual community. This chapter describes the technologies that the author used to carry out the qualitative study from start to finish, including the steps of online …

Health Care In The Us Department Of Veterans Affairs: Critical Issues And Strategic Progress, Kristin Nicole Sandoval Jan 2015

Health Care In The Us Department Of Veterans Affairs: Critical Issues And Strategic Progress, Kristin Nicole Sandoval

Master's Theses

The United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is one of the largest executive departments in the nation, providing essential financial and medical assistance to veterans and their families. As the VA continues to evolve and grow it is imperative to understand the department’s current capability constraints and how they arose in order to propose effective methods for addressing current issues and overcoming future policy pitfalls. The most critical issues presently facing the VA concern appalling increases in wait-times and backlogs for services, which have emerged since 9/11 and are primarily the result of growing numbers of disabled veterans from …

Seeing Success: Biographies Of Low-Income Students, Julia M. Morrice Jan 2015

Seeing Success: Biographies Of Low-Income Students, Julia M. Morrice

Master's Theses

The purpose of this narrative ethnographic study was to explore the success stories and lived experiences of six low-income students, utilizing an asset-based approach and attention to cultural wealth. Low-income students are less likely to attend college, and those that do are less likely to complete a degree. There is presently a lack of asset-based research that explores the successes of low-income students. A semi-structured interview protocol yielded biographical narratives of low-income students, which included discussions about identity and provided insight into the cultural wealth possessed by low-income students. In an effort to better understand the use of visual methodologies …

Tales Of Archaeological Places: Visualizing Mayan Pre-Colonial Settlement Patterns, Angela Ivanov Jan 2015

Tales Of Archaeological Places: Visualizing Mayan Pre-Colonial Settlement Patterns, Angela Ivanov

Master's Theses

In order to visualize ancient Mayan settlement patterns and demography through time, data derived from 26 published archaeological sites were collected and plotted onto three discrete map media. These data were subdivided into six time periods ranging from Pre-Classic to Post-Classic, and were simulated for each map medium. Specific attention was given during the selection of geographical locations, natural landscape features, map annotation, layers and coordinates. Tabulated information were site names, coordinates, site founding dates, site decline/abandonment dates, and estimated population. Combined with existing country base map layers downloaded from online geographical sources and time series animation (an animated map), …

From Trauma To Trial: Proposing New Methods For Examining The Variability Of Sharp Force Trauma On Bone, Amanda Feldman Jan 2015

From Trauma To Trial: Proposing New Methods For Examining The Variability Of Sharp Force Trauma On Bone, Amanda Feldman

Master's Theses

Although sharp force trauma is not the most common form of homicide in the United States, it accounts for the majority of violent crimes committed in the United Kingdom, and the frequency of knife related crimes has been increasing over several decades. Despite the prevalence of sharp force trauma in forensic literature, there is still a large gap linking weapons to skeletal injuries. Although there have been forensic studies on the effects of fabric during decomposition, very little data exist on the effects of fabric and bodily coverings on wounds during stabbing events. In a significant number of homicide cases, …

Hadrian's Wall: A Study In Function, Mylinh Van Pham Dec 2014

Hadrian's Wall: A Study In Function, Mylinh Van Pham

Master's Theses

Earlier studies on Hadrian's Wall have focused on its defensive function to protect the Roman Empire by foreign invasions, but the determination is Hadrian's Wall most likely did not have one single purpose, but rather multiple purposes. This makes the Wall more complex and interesting than a simple structure to keep out foreign intruders. Collective research on other frontier walls' functions and characteristics around the empire during the reign of Hadrian are used to compare and determine the possible function or functions of the Wall. The Wall not only served political purposes, but also had economic and social uses as …

Dionysian Biopolitics: Karl Kerényi’S Concept Of Indestructible Life, Kristóf Fenyvesi Sep 2014

Dionysian Biopolitics: Karl Kerényi’S Concept Of Indestructible Life, Kristóf Fenyvesi

Comparative Philosophy

Scholar of religion Karl Kerényi’s last book, Dionysos, is a grand attempt at reinterpreting ζωη (zoe), the Greek concept of indestructible life, which he distinguishes from βίος (bios), finite life. In Kerényi’s view, the meaning and sensual experience of zoe was expressed in its richest form in the Cretan beginnings of the cult of Dionysos. The major characteristics of this cult, as Kerényi describes, were beyond the cultural, political, and sexual limits of the Christian interpretations of life and nature. Searching for modern analogies to zoe, Kerényi explains the idea in relation to molecular biology’s minimum definition of life. Despite …
