The Yi-Jing Cosmic Model As A Framework For Comparative Philosophy, Harry Donkers

Comparative Philosophy

Based on the symbolism of the trigrams, the Yi-Jing cosmic model offers possibilities in a coordinate system with eight octants to discuss different philosophical developments in parallel. It forms a framework for further elaboration of theory and methodology of comparative philosophy. This paper is restricted to extracting, analyzing and comparing common features from the perspectives of the Yi-Jing model. Achieving harmony is the subject of a new paper under construction. The philosophical developments in the quadrants, Naturalism, Moralism, Rationalism and Humanism, are characterized by a fundamental difference between subject and object. Entrepreneurialism As Precarity: American Bookkeepers And Technological Transformation, Melanie Maxwell Bailey Dec 2021

Entrepreneurialism As Precarity: American Bookkeepers And Technological Transformation, Melanie Maxwell Bailey

Master's Theses

This study documents how small, U.S. bookkeepers are coping with and adapting to changing accounting technology, revealing how larger social and economic processes shape those reactions. This ethnographic research was conducted through literature review, ethnographic fieldwork, and semi-structured interviews, which were then thematically coded and analyzed. New accounting technology is seen both a tool and a source of freedom for bookkeepers, enabling remote entrepreneurship (argued to be a manifestation of neoliberal ideals) for the White women who primarily make up the industry. However, a major consequence of these technological transformations is the increasing ability to automate tasks bookkeepers historically considered …

I analyzed the contents of the interviews through qualitative data analysis. Findings suggest that people experience transportation insecurity as time infringement through congested traffic, convoluted schedules, and service complications, …

Renewing The World: Disrupting Settler-Colonial Destruction, Kerri J. Malloy

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Destruction of the religious practices of Indigenous people strikes at the core of their identity and connection to the places they have existed in since time immemorial. Northwestern California saw the world renewal ceremonies of the Tolowas (at the Yontocket in 1853) and the Wiyots (at Tuluwat in 1860) horrifically interrupted by massacres as they prayed for a better world for all humanity. The cultural and spiritual identities of the tribes were nearly erased by settler-colonists intent on destroying people they perceived as less than human and an obstacle in their quest for land acquisition. This chapter approaches the targeting …

Photography And Modern Public Housing In Los Angeles, Nicole Krup Oest

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

In the 1940s, Los Angeles faced an acute housing crisis. The local housing authority responded with a controversial program of slum clearance and public housing, as well as photography that presented the crisis in innovative ways. This book brings this photography together with previously unpublished sources to uncover a largely unexamined concept of home photography. Case studies from Los Angeles, New York and Berlin along with FBI records and almost forgotten bulletins invite a new understanding of the history of housing and photography, in which scientists and photographers played central roles.
