Libraries of higher educational institutes besides serving their parent organisation can provide extension service towards the society or the local community. This idea generated with the Government guideline of the MHRD for the Educational Institutions called Unnat Bharat Abhiyan for adopting village for their development and bridging the gap between urban and rural. This paper deals with how libraries being part of the institution can contribute in shaping the development of the adopted village through active participation of the community and setting up village community library under the patron of institutional library. It can bridge the gap between rural and …

The heyday of Islam was marked by the rapid development of Islamic science, culture, and education. This rapid development is supported by the existence of institutions that accommodate these developments. At that time, scientific institutions were established as learning science, culture, and Islamic education. Ibn Killis was a figure and pioneer of the development of education in the Fatimid Caliphate in Egypt. He founded a university and spent thousands of dinars per month to finance it. One of the most important foundations built during the Fatimid period was the construction of Dar al-Hikmah (The house of wisdom) or Dar al-'Ilm …

The Potential Role Of Zambian Public Libraries In Actualizing The Global Climate Change Agenda, Pailet Chewe Mr., Boniface Banda Mr.
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Globally, public libraries are considered key partners in the fight against climate change. Yet, little is known about the explicit contribution of Zambian public libraries in actualizing the global climate change agenda. To address this gap, the authors investigated the role of public libraries in the climate change agenda. The objective was to establish the role of public libraries in combating climate change and its impacts. Using a survey method, a purposive sample of 100 participants was targeted. Quantitative data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences while qualitative data were coded and analyzed thematically. The results …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
E-resources and its usages are escalating rapidly today. This study is an attempt to assess the consumption of e-resources and the impact of e-literacy on the college students of Shillong. For this an experimental method was adopted. Students were given guidance on e-resources and the data was collected on different stages using a structured questionnaire to see the impact on their consumption habits. One premier institute, that is, St. Anthony’s College was selected for the study. It is spectacular to find that there is a significant difference in e-resources consumption among college students at the beginning and at the end …

The Influence Of Maternal Glucocorticoids On Offspring Phenotype In High-And Low-Risk Environments, Kirsty J. Macleod, Tracy Langkilde, Cameron P. Venable, David C. Ensminger, Michael J. Sheriff
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Elevated maternal glucocorticoid levels during gestation can lead to phenotypic changes in offspring via maternal effects. Although such effects have traditionally been considered maladaptive, maternally derived glucocorticoids may adaptively prepare offspring for their future environment depending upon the correlation between maternal and offspring environments. Nevertheless, relatively few studies test the effects of prenatal glucocorticoid exposure across multiple environments. We tested the potential for ecologically relevant increases in maternal glucocorticoids in the eastern fence lizard (Sceloporus undulatus) to induce adaptive phenotypic changes in offspring exposed to high or low densities of an invasive fire ant predator. Maternal treatment had limited effects …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Long-term environmental management to prevent waterfowl population declines is informed by ecology, movement behavior and habitat use patterns. Extrinsic factors, such as human-induced disturbance, can cause behavioral changes which may influence movement and resource needs, driving variation that affects management efficacy. To better understand the relationship between human-based disturbance and animal movement and habitat use, and their potential effects on management, we GPS tracked 15 dabbling ducks in California over ~4-weeks before, during and after the start of a recreational hunting season in October/November 2018. We recorded locations at 2-min intervals across three separate 24-h tracking phases: Phase 1) two …

Life At Low Reynolds Number Re-Visited: The Apparent Activation Energy Of Viscous Flow In Sea Water, Peter G. Brewer, Edward T. Peltzer, Kathryn Lage
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
In a 1976 lecture entitled “Life at low Reynolds Number,” Edward Purcell examined constraints on mobility of small aquatic animals defining the energetic challenge as “to move far enough to beat diffusion.” We show that the essential requirement is the need to do sufficient work to overcome the activation energy of viscous flow. Raman spectroscopy shows that sea water is dominated (78–85%) by the hydrogen bonded forms, primarily as the large (H2O)5 tetrahedral pentamer form. Two hydrogen bonds must be broken to disrupt this structure. The strength of the hydrogen bond in water is ~8.4 kJ/mol and the experimentally determined …

The Black Box: Close Reading Literary Life, Scott Jarvie
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
This paper reimagines a quintessential literary practice: close reading. The autoethnographic inquiry examines the relationship between a single text and my experience with it as teacher, student, reader and writer: Jennifer Egan’s short story “Black Box”. In doing so I make a case for the literary as a useful mode for being and teaching in classrooms, and for the literariness of the lives caught up in those classrooms. I examine various properties of the text, including the story’s unusual form, the implications of its content and genre, the narrative voice, and the central metaphor of a black box. Reading through these, …

Short-Term Elevations In Glucocorticoids Do Not Alter Telomere Lengths: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis Of Non-Primate Vertebrate Studies, Lauren Zane, Dav C. Ensminger, José Pablo Vázquez-Medina
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Background The neuroendocrine stress response allows vertebrates to cope with stressors via the activation of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, which ultimately results in the secretion of glucocorticoids (GCs). Glucocorticoids have pleiotropic effects on behavior and physiology, and might influence telomere length dynamics. During a stress event, GCs mobilize energy towards survival mechanisms rather than to telomere maintenance. Additionally, reactive oxygen species produced in response to increased GC levels can damage telomeres, also leading to telomere shortening. In our systematic review and meta-analysis, we tested whether GC levels impact telomere length and if this relationship differs among time frame, life history …

Immunomodulatory Activity Of Carboxymethyl Pachymaran On Immunosuppressed Mice Induced By Cyclophosphamide, Feng Liu, Lijia Zhang, Xi Feng, Salam A. Ibrahim, Wen Huang, Ying Liu
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The effects of immunomodulatory activity of two types of carboxymethyl pachymaran (CMP-1 and CMP-2) on cyclophosphamide (CTX)-induced mice were investigated. Both CMP-1 and CMP-2 were found to restore the splenomegaly and alleviate the spleen lesions and the mRNA ex-pressions of TLR4, MyD88, p65 and NF-κB in spleen were also increased. CMP-1 and CMP-2 could enhance the immunity by increasing the levels of TNF-α, IL-2, IL-6, IFN-γ, Ig-A and Ig-G in serum. In addition, CMP-1 could increase the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes and reduce the relative richness of Firmicutes at the phylum level. CMP-1 and CMP-2 could reduce the relative abundance …
