Contrasting Effects Of Sleep Fragmentation And Angiotensin-Ii Treatment Upon Pro-Inflammatory Responses Of Mice, David C. Ensminger, Nicholas D. Wheeler, Reem Al Makki, Kristen N. Eads, Noah T. Ashley Aug 2022

Contrasting Effects Of Sleep Fragmentation And Angiotensin-Ii Treatment Upon Pro-Inflammatory Responses Of Mice, David C. Ensminger, Nicholas D. Wheeler, Reem Al Makki, Kristen N. Eads, Noah T. Ashley

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Disordered sleep promotes inflammation in brain and peripheral tissues, but the mechanisms that regulate these responses are poorly understood. One hypothesis is that activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) from sleep loss elevates blood pressure to promote vascular sheer stress leading to inflammation. As catecholamines produced from SNS activation can directly regulate inflammation, we pharmacologically altered blood pressure using an alternative approach-manipulation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). Male C57BL6/J mice were treated with angiotensin or captopril to elevate and reduce blood pressure, respectively and then exposed to 24-h of sleep fragmentation (SF) or allowed to sleep (control). Estimating Uncertainty In Density Surface Models, David L. Miller, Elizabeth A. Becker, Karin A. Forney, Jason J. Roberts, Ana Cañadas, Robert S. Schick

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Providing uncertainty estimates for predictions derived from species distribution models is essential for management but there is little guidance on potential sources of uncertainty in predictions and how best to combine these. Here we show where uncertainty can arise in density surface models (a multi-stage spatial modelling approach for distance sampling data), focussing on cetacean density modelling. We propose an extensible, modular, hybrid analytical-simulation approach to encapsulate these sources. We provide example analyses of fin whales Balaenoptera physalus in the California Current Ecosystem.

Enhancing The Cognition And Efficacy Of Machine Learning Through Similarity, Vishnu Pendyala, Rakesh Amireddy

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Similarity is a key element of machine learning and can make human learning much more effective as well. One of the goals of this paper is to expound on this aspect. We identify real-world concepts similar to hard-to-understand theories to enhance the learning experience and comprehension of a machine learning student. The second goal is to enhance the work in the current literature that uses similarity for transcoding. We uniquely try transcoding from Python to R and vice versa, something that was not attempted before, by identifying similarities in a latent embedding space. We list several real-world analogies to show …

Exoskeletal Predator Defenses Of Juvenile California Spiny Lobsters (Panulirus Interruptus) Are Affected By Fluctuating Ocean Acidification-Like Conditions, Kaitlyn B. Lowder, Maya S. Devries, Ruan Hattingh, James M.D. Day, Andreas J. Andersson, Phillip J. Zerofski, Jennifer R.A. Taylor

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Spiny lobsters rely on multiple biomineralized exoskeletal predator defenses that may be sensitive to ocean acidification (OA). Compromised mechanical integrity of these defensive structures may tilt predator-prey outcomes, leading to increased mortality in the lobsters’ environment. Here, we tested the effects of OA-like conditions on the mechanical integrity of selected exoskeletal defenses of juvenile California spiny lobster, Panulirus interruptus. Young spiny lobsters reside in kelp forests with dynamic carbonate chemistry due to local metabolism and photosynthesis as well as seasonal upwelling, yielding daily and seasonal fluctuations in pH. Lobsters were exposed to a series of stable and diurnally fluctuating reduced …

Comparative What? Latin American Challenges To Philosophy-As-Worldview, Manuel Vargas

Comparative Philosophy

Attention to the details of putatively obvious examples of philosophy-as-worldview within Latin America give us reasons to be skeptical about the taxonomy that gives us the category of philosophy-as-worldview. Among the examples that suggest difficulties for this way of thinking about the philosophical enterprise are 19th century Mexican ethnolinguistics, contemporary efforts to reconstruct historical and contemporary Indigenous thought, and 20th century efforts to articulate regional ontologies within Latin America. However, reflection on these cases also point to a different project worth considering, namely, a taxonomy of wisdom- and knowledge-focused practices that might allow a different way of drawing …

Marine protected areas (MPAs), particularly large MPAs, are increasing in number and size around the globe in part to facilitate the conservation of marine megafauna under the assumption that large-scale MPAs better align with vagile life histories; however, this alignment is not well established. Using a global tracking dataset from 36 species across five taxa, chosen to reflect the span of home range size in highly mobile marine megafauna, we show most MPAs are too small to encompass complete home ranges of most species. Based on size alone, 40% of existing MPAs could encompass the home ranges of the smallest …

Intra-Seasonal Variation In Feeding Rates And Diel Foraging Behaviour In A Seasonally Fasting Mammal, The Humpback Whale, Ross C. Nichols, David E. Cade, Shirel Kahane-Rapport, Jeremy Goldbogen, Alison Stimpert, Douglas Nowacek, Andrew J. Read, David W. Johnston, Ari Friedlaender

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Antarctic humpback whales forage in summer, coincident with the seasonal abundance of their primary prey, the Antarctic krill. During the feeding season, humpback whales accumulate energy stores sufficient to fuel their fasting period lasting over six months. Previous animal movement modelling work (using area-restricted search as a proxy) suggests a hyperphagic period late in the feeding season, similar in timing to some terrestrial fasting mammals. However, no direct measures of seasonal foraging behaviour existed to corroborate this hypothesis. We attached high-resolution, motion-sensing biologging tags to 69 humpback whales along the Western Antarctic Peninsula throughout the feeding season from January to …

August Vollmer, Traffic In Women, And The Theory Of Organized Crime, Paul Knepper

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

During the 1920s, the League of Nations carried out the first intercontinental investigation into the traffic in women. Although this work is virtually unknown in criminology, the investigators, William Snow and Bascom Johnson, formulated the conceptual language of “trafficking” used today. It was also during the 1920s that Frederick Thrasher and John Landesco published their pioneering works on “organized crime” drawing on research in Chicago. The advantages of the League’s model can be seen in the response to a 1924 report of a white slave traffic ring in Los Angeles by August Vollmer, the celebrated founder of professionalism in American …

Life At Low Reynolds Number Re-Visited: The Efficiency Of Microbial Propulsion, Peter G. Brewer, Edward T. Peltzer, Kathryn Lage

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

It has for over 40 years been taken as a truth universally acknowledged that microbial swimming efficiency by flagellar propulsion is fixed by fluid mechanical limitations at 1–2%. And that the missing 98% dissipated as heat is inefficient or wasted. Estimates of such low swimming efficiency make no sense. Microbes have had billions of years to evolve highly efficient swimming; images of microbes in motion show movement with alacrity and maximum speeds of up to 10 body lengths per second, equivalent to the running and swimming speeds of far larger animals. This paradox can be resolved by taking into account …

Dynamic Python-Based Method Provides Quantitative Analysis Of Intercellular Junction Organization During S. Pneumoniae Infection Of The Respiratory Epithelium, Devons Mo, Shuying Xu, Juan P. Rosa, Shakir Hasan, Walter Adams

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Many respiratory pathogens compromise epithelial barrier function during lung infection by disrupting intercellular junctions, such as adherens junctions and tight junctions, that maintain intercellular integrity. This includes Streptococcus pneumoniae, a leading cause of pneumonia, which can successfully breach the epithelial barrier and cause severe infections such as septicemia and meningitis. Fluorescence microscopy analysis on intercellular junction protein manipulation by respiratory pathogens has yielded major advances in our understanding of their pathogenesis. Unfortunately, a lack of automated image analysis tools that can tolerate variability in sample-sample staining has limited the accuracy in evaluating intercellular junction organization quantitatively. We have created an …

Data Driven Control Of Vagus Nerve Stimulation For The Cardiovascular System: An In Silico Computational Study, Andrew Branen, Yuyu Yao, Mayuresh V. Kothare, Babak Mahmoudi, Gautam Kumar

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Vagus nerve stimulation is an emerging therapy that seeks to offset pathological conditions by electrically stimulating the vagus nerve through cuff electrodes, where an electrical pulse is defined by several parameters such as pulse amplitude, pulse width, and pulse frequency. Currently, vagus nerve stimulation is under investigation for the treatment of heart failure, cardiac arrhythmia and hypertension. Through several clinical trials that sought to assess vagus nerve stimulation for the treatment of heart failure, stimulation parameters were determined heuristically and the results were inconclusive, which has led to the suggestion of using a closed-loop approach to optimize the stimulation parameters. …
