Reading The Wreckage: De-Encrypting Eliot's Aesthetics Of Empire, Paul Douglass
Reading The Wreckage: De-Encrypting Eliot's Aesthetics Of Empire, Paul Douglass
Faculty Publications, English and Comparative Literature
The writer examines an aesthetics of empire evident in Eliot's The Waste Land. He contends that though this work's formal innovations appear “revolutionary,” its aesthetics fit into modernism's reactionary character and reflect the cultural politics of the British conservatism that Eliot had adopted. In decoding the poem's fragments and allusions, he illustrates Eliot's preoccupation with empire. He also shows how The Waste Land may be seen as part of a British literary tradition of “reading the wreckage” that goes back at least to Edward Volney's Ruins (1791).
The Construction Of Art On The Internet And The Mediating Influence Of The Search Engine, Brett Stalbaum
The Construction Of Art On The Internet And The Mediating Influence Of The Search Engine, Brett Stalbaum
SWITCH
This article examines how the nature of different search engines affect the visibility of artwork in the internet age. It defines three types of search engines: one of them based broadly on keywords and customer tailored experiences, one akin to a curated library of specified interests, and the last focused keenly on the catalogs of subcultures. It concludes that in order for art to gain traction with these search engines, the artist must be keenly aware of what their work is, and what they want it to represent. The author states that it is necessary for the contemporary artist to …

Complexes Between Nascent Polypeptides And Their Molecular Chaperones In The Cytosol Of Mammalian Cells, Daryl K. Eggers, W. J. Welch, W. J. Hansen
Faculty Publications, Chemistry
Folding of newly synthesized proteins in vivo is believed to be facilitated by the cooperative interaction of a defined group of proteins known as molecular chaperones. We investigated the direct interaction of chaperones with nascent polypeptides in the cytosol of mammalian cells by multiple methods. A new approach using a polyclonal antibody to puromycin allowed us to tag and capture a population of truncated nascent polypeptides with no bias as to the identity of the bound chaperones. In addition, antibodies that recognize the cytosolic chaperones hsp70, CCT (TRiC), hsp40, p48 (Hip), and hsp90 were compared on the basis of their …

Subregional Planning In The San Francisco Bay Area: Tri-Valley Subregional Planning Strategy, Hing Wong
Subregional Planning In The San Francisco Bay Area: Tri-Valley Subregional Planning Strategy, Hing Wong
Master's Projects
Many people in the San Francisco Bay Area have noticed that their quality of life has deteriorated in recent years. Citizens are becoming increasingly aware of problems such as traffic congestion; cost and supply of housing; loss of open space and agricultural land; environmental concerns; deterioration of infrastructure; and economic uncertainties.
All of these problems have significant effects on the physical and social welfare of our communities. Many of them are interrelated, and the result of haphazard regional growth patterns. The real dilemma is not that these conditions exist, but that they are largely unresolvable by our present structure of …
