Mineta Transportation Institute
In June 2001, the Mineta Transportation Institute joined several schools nationwide, as well as authorities in transportation, to discuss sustainable transportation. The purpose was to expose children to the opportunities available in transportation-related careers and to discuss utilizing natural resources to develop alternatives to current modes of transportation. Each school presented a short project on sustainable transportation. The keynote speaker was Secretary Norman Mineta. The moderators were Rod Diridon and Trixie Johnson from MTI. Future Development In San Jose’S Coyote Valley, Michelle H. Fisk
Master's Projects
This Planning Study reviews the city planning procedure that Cisco Systems would need to follow in order to build its proposed campus in the City of San Jose’s North Coyote Valley Campus Industrial Area. It is a controversial subject with both pros and cons, which I will examine throughout this study. Research was conducted using primarily written articles about different viewpoints on this topic, attending community meetings and listening to community members, as well as interviewing City of San Jose Planning Department staff.

Get It Out Of My Backyard! Why We Need To Proactively Plan For “Sensitive” Uses, Tara A. Kelly
Get It Out Of My Backyard! Why We Need To Proactively Plan For “Sensitive” Uses, Tara A. Kelly
Master's Projects
Today’s planning literature is ripe with articles and books proclaiming the value of “Smart Growth” and to a lesser degree New Urbanism. Planning conferences*, magazines and websites repeatedly proclaim the need for planners and municipal leaders to adopt Smart Growth practices and New Urbanist design guidelines as they shape the futures of their regions.
Broadly, Smart Growth is a set of planning principles largely defined and popularized in reaction to what is seen as the failures of sprawling single-family development which has dominated post-World War II housing construction in the United States.
Smart Growth’s counterpart, New Urbanism, was developed primarily …
Operation G.R.U.B.: Gardens Replace Urban Blight - An Ecological Alternative For Addressing The Health, Socio Economic, And Environmental Needs Of At-Risk Communities, Neil S. Brantley
Master's Projects
The issue of urban sustainability is a crucial one, particularly in poorer urban communities with limited socio-economic and environmental resources. The underlying goal of this research project is to provide a framework of relevant information for the development of sustainable urban agriculture systems as a tool for improving the quality of life of the urban poor.
Two different infrastructure contexts will be presented, with the intent of relating the applicability of Urban Agriculture initiatives to the enhancement of destitute urban communities in both the developed and developing worlds. A number of successful case studies will be referenced in each developmental …
Public/Private Partnerships And Environmentalism, Abbe L. Hoenscheid
Public/Private Partnerships And Environmentalism, Abbe L. Hoenscheid
Master's Projects
This report explores public/private partnerships and their use in protecting critical lands. It examines the structure of such partnerships, including the benefits and downfalls, the players involved, and the strengths and weaknesses of the players.
Four case studies are examined that illustrate ways that public/private partnerships be specifically geared toward resource conservation. From the facilitation of land purchases intended to preserve sensitive environmental resources, as shown in the discussions of the Trust for Public Lands and the Ballona Wetlands Land Trust, to the protection and ongoing operation of national landmarks, as illustrated in the discussions of the Presidio Trust and …
