Form-Based Zoning: A Tool For Creating Small Business Opportunities, Tiffin Michelle Goodman May 2004

Form-Based Zoning: A Tool For Creating Small Business Opportunities, Tiffin Michelle Goodman

Master's Projects

The United States has a curious history of employing zoning as a reactionary solution to society’s physical problems. In many ways, it has been an effective tool for ensuring the built environment develops in a manner consistent with cultural norms, preferences, and safety concerns. However, it has failed, in its current form, to keep pace with the growth pressures, transportation limitations, and basic service needs of the modern society. Hence, zoning regulation in the United States is at a crossroads. The structure of zoning ordinances must be reevaluated periodically to ensure they are effective and efficient in their goals. Traditional …

Pet Therapy Use In Pediatric Hospitals: An Internet Based Pilot Study, Kara Potter May 2004

Pet Therapy Use In Pediatric Hospitals: An Internet Based Pilot Study, Kara Potter

Master's Projects

Introduction: In a technologically advanced health care system, health care providers continue to care for the physical, emotional, and spiritual well being of their patients. Alternative therapies, such as massage, music, and aroma therapy, are often included in such holistic care. Pet therapy is another form of alternative therapy that appears to be beneficial. Method: Child life coordinators and play therapists from 100 pediatric hospitals in 44 U.S. states were sent an email invitation to participate in the study by completing an online survey. Results: From the children's hospitals responding, it appears that pet therapy is used in the majority …

Methanogenic Archaea And Human Periodontal Disease, Paul W. Lepp, Mary M. Brinig, Cleber C. Ouverney, Katherine Palm, Gary C. Armitage, David A. Relman Apr 2004

Methanogenic Archaea And Human Periodontal Disease, Paul W. Lepp, Mary M. Brinig, Cleber C. Ouverney, Katherine Palm, Gary C. Armitage, David A. Relman

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Archaea have been isolated from the human colon, vagina, and oral cavity, but have not been established as causes of human disease. In this study, we reveal a relationship between the severity of periodontal disease and the relative abundance of archaeal small subunit ribosomal RNA genes (SSU rDNA) in the subgingival crevice by using quantitative PCR. Furthermore, the relative abundance of archaeal small subunit rDNA decreased at treated sites in association with clinical improvement. Archaea were harbored by 36% of periodontitis patients and were restricted to subgingival sites with periodontal disease. The presence of archaeal cells at these sites was …

National Pollution Discharge Elimination System Storm Water Permits Effects In Urban Planning And Building, Robin T. Lee Apr 2004

National Pollution Discharge Elimination System Storm Water Permits Effects In Urban Planning And Building, Robin T. Lee

Master's Projects

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of reducing impervious surface coverage by using compact development. Compact development can be used to meet the pollution reduction requirements of the Clean Water Act as implemented through the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) storm water discharge permitting process. Various court cases and laws have been cited to give background to development of the NPDES permit. Information has been garnered through the Internet and published resources.

Insights to the NPDES storm water permitting process were gathered by attending meetings of the State of California Regional Water Quality Control Board …

The Aesthetic Turn In Green Marketing: Environmental Consumer Ethics Of Natural Personal Care Products, Anne Marie Todd Jan 2004

The Aesthetic Turn In Green Marketing: Environmental Consumer Ethics Of Natural Personal Care Products, Anne Marie Todd

Faculty Publications

Green consumerism is on the rise in America, but its environmental effects are contested. Does green marketing contribute to the greening of American consciousness, or does it encourage corporate greenwashing? This tenuous ethical position means that eco-marketers must carefully frame their environmental products in a way that appeals to consumers with environmental ethics and buyers who consider natural products as well as conventional items. Thus, eco-marketing constructs a complicated ethical identity for the green consumer. Environmentally aware individuals are already guided by their personal ethics. In trying to attract new consumers, environmentally minded businesses attach an aesthetic quality to environmental …

Pokémon® Cards And The Shortest Common Superstring, Mark Stamp, Austin Stamp Jan 2004

Pokémon® Cards And The Shortest Common Superstring, Mark Stamp, Austin Stamp

Faculty Publications, Computer Science

Evidence is presented that certain sequences of Pokémon cards are determined by selecting consecutive elements from a longer sequence. We then consider the problem of recovering the shortest common superstring (SCS), i.e., the shortest string that contains each of the Pokémon card sequences as a consecutive substring. The SCS problem arises in many applications, most notably in DNA sequencing.

Thresholds Of Significance, Carmela M. Campbell Jan 2004

Thresholds Of Significance, Carmela M. Campbell

Master's Projects

This report provides a comprehensive understanding of environmental “Thresholds of Significance” by including a broad discussion of the general concepts associated with thresholds and by also providing a sample thresholds document for projects that occur on unincorporated Santa Clara County lands. The California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) defines a thresholds as an identifiable quantitative, qualitative or performance level of a particular environmental effect. Non-compliance with a threshold results in a determination that a particular project may have a significant effect on the environment and necessitates preparation of an Environmental Impact Report.

CEQA encourages public agencies to adopt thresholds to standardize …

Transportation Control Measures In The San Francisco Bay Area, Karoline Grigsby Dec 2003

Transportation Control Measures In The San Francisco Bay Area, Karoline Grigsby

Master's Projects

Throughout the later half of the century air pollution and its effects on the environment and human health has emerged as a focus of regulatory action at the federal and state level. This report will examine the effect that federal air quality legislation has had on regional air quality management through transportation control measures (TCMs). Federal transportation control measures (TCMs) are a transportation-planning tool for controlling regional air quality. TCMs are a means to control traffic congestion on streets and highways and to reduce the total amount of vehicle miles traveled (VMT), therefore reducing motor vehicle emissions and improving air …
