Lord Byron’S Feminist Canon: Notes Toward Its Construction, Paul Douglass Aug 2006

Lord Byron’S Feminist Canon: Notes Toward Its Construction, Paul Douglass

Faculty Publications, English and Comparative Literature

Lord Byron took a highly ambivalent attitude toward female authorship, and yet his poetry, letters, and journals exhibit many proofs of the power of women’s language and perceptions. He responded to, borrowed from, and adapted parts of the works of Maria Edgeworth, Harriet Lee, Madame de Staël, Mary Shelley, Elizabeth Inchbald, Hannah Cowley, Joanna Baillie, Lady Caroline Lamb, Mary Robinson, and Charlotte Dacre. The influence of women writers on his career may also be seen in the development of the female (and male) characters in his narrative poetry and drama. This essay focuses on the influence upon Byron of Lee, …

Cadre Residency: Social Networking, Ethan Miller

SWITCH

The Social Networking project explores how global systems like economics, culture, technology, and the military are reflected in language. By scraping text from organizational websites like Apple.com and mapping it geographically, the four systems mentioned create an axes along which language usage can be visualized.

Customizing And Using A Popular Online Information Literacy Tutorial: One Library’S Experience, Robert Flatley, William Jefferson Apr 2006

Customizing And Using A Popular Online Information Literacy Tutorial: One Library’S Experience, Robert Flatley, William Jefferson

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

To teach information literacy, many colleges and universities use a version of TILT (the Texas Information Tutorial) or Searchpath, a modification of TILT by Western Michigan University. This paper describes our experience customizing Searchpath for Kutztown University’s Rohrbach Library, including the impetus behind the project, the process of customizing Searchpath, the project pilot, collaborative efforts, and challenges encountered. The authors also discuss the decision to select Searchpath rather than TILT, how Kutztown’s version of tutorial is currently being used, and future plans for the product, along with suggestions to those considering Searchpath for their libraries.

Thermal Stress On Intertidal Limpets: Long-Term Hindcasts And Lethal Limits, Mark Denny, Luke Miller, Christopher Harley Apr 2006

Thermal Stress On Intertidal Limpets: Long-Term Hindcasts And Lethal Limits, Mark Denny, Luke Miller, Christopher Harley

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

When coupled with long-term meteorological records, a heat-budget model for the limpet, Lottia gigantea, provides a wealth of information regarding environmental and topographic controls of body temperature in this ecologically important species. (1) The maximum body temperature predicted for any site (37.5°C) is insufficient to kill all limpets, suggesting that acute thermal stress does not set an absolute upper limit to the elevation of L. gigantea on the shore. Therefore, the upper limit must be set by behavioral responses, sublethal effects or ecological interactions. (2) Temperatures sufficient to kill limpets are reached at only a small fraction of substratum orientations …

Sixth National Garrett Morgan Symposium On Sustainable Transportation, Mti Report S-06-01, Mineta Transportation Institute

Mineta Transportation Institute

The Mineta Transportation Institute brought together experts in surface transportation and students from elementary, middle, and high schools to discuss sustainable transportation topics on March 28, 2006. The goal was to introduce the students to transportation-related careers and to inspire them to pursue the academic curricula that would lead to success in those careers. Students from California, Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., participated in a videoconference, during which they heard a keynote statement from the U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta. The students also presented project proposals for innovative transportation alternatives during the videoconference. The presentations were followed by …
