Restoring Native Plants Following Invasive Malephora Crocea (Coppery Iceplant, Aizoaceae) Eradication On Anacapa Island, Nathan William Hale

Master's Theses

To avoid unintended complications of invasive species eradication, it is important to understand the potential implications of the techniques used in species eradication efforts. This study aimed to compare how different methods of removing Malephora crocea affect the survivorship of planted seedlings of native perennial plants on Anacapa Island. Employing a randomized complete block design in an M. crocea stand, three removal treatments were tested: 1) hand-pull; 2) spray with herbicide and leave skeletons; and 3) spray and then remove skeletons after 2.5 months. In each treatment, seedlings of three species (Leptosyne gigantea, Frankenia salina, and Grindelia …

This Could Be A Game!": Defining Gamification For The Classroom, Darcy Elaine Osheim Jan 2013

This Could Be A Game!": Defining Gamification For The Classroom, Darcy Elaine Osheim

Master's Theses

Instructors find a gap between what they experienced in school in the mid-to-late 20th century and the experiences of students entering college in 2012/13. In the United States, the influx of almost universal access to technology has marked this generation in a way the previous generations must work to understand, and gamification is a strategy used in areas like marketing to gain participation from this age group. Gamification is a strategy that employs game mechanics, techniques, and theory in areas that traditionally are not set up to function like a game. The purpose of this study was to define gamification …

The Effect Of Dietary Methylmercury On Na+, K+, -Atpase Activity And Growth In Fall-Run Chinook Salmon (O. Tshawytscha), John Negrey Jan 2013

The Effect Of Dietary Methylmercury On Na+, K+, -Atpase Activity And Growth In Fall-Run Chinook Salmon (O. Tshawytscha), John Negrey

Master's Theses

Hatchery reared Chinook salmon from California's Central Valley were fed for 67 days (Apr-Jun, 2008) on fish pellets mixed with either 0, 1, 3, or 5 µg*g-1 methylmercury hydroxide. Weight, fork length, condition factor, and Na+,K+- ATPase measurements were determined every two weeks and a 96-h seawater challenge was conducted at the conclusion of the experiment.

Results from two-way ANOVA, with treatment and date as independent variables, indicated no significant differences for weight (F3, 32 = 1.38; P = 0.280), length (F3, 32 = 0.986; P = 0.412) and condition factor (F3, 32 = 0.239; P = 0.869). Post-hoc analysis …

Dharmakirti, Davidson, And Knowing Reality, Lajos Brons Dec 2012

Dharmakirti, Davidson, And Knowing Reality, Lajos Brons

Comparative Philosophy

If we distinguish phenomenal effects from their noumenal causes, the former being our conceptual(ized) experiences, the latter their grounds or causes in reality "as it is" independent of our experience, then two contradictory positions with regards to the relationship between these two can be distinguished: either phenomena are identical with their noumenal causes, or they are not. Davidson is among the most influential modern defenders of the former position, metaphysical non-dualism. Dharmakirti' strict distinction between ultimate and conventional reality, on the other hand, may be one of the most rigorously elaborated theories of the opposite position, metaphysical dualism. Despite this …

Benevolent Government Now, Howard J. Curzer Dec 2012

Benevolent Government Now, Howard J. Curzer

Comparative Philosophy

Mencian benevolent government intervenes dramatically in many ways in the marketplace in order to secure the material well-being of the population, especially the poor and disadvantaged. Mencius considers this sort of intervention to be appropriate not just occasionally when dealing with natural disasters, but regularly. Furthermore, Mencius recommends shifting from regressive to progressive taxes. He favors reduction of inequality so as to reduce corruption of government by the wealthy, and opposes punishment for people driven to crime by destitution. Mencius thinks government should try to improve the character of the population by preventing or relieving poverty, by setting a good …

Mohist Approach To The Rule-Following Problem, Chung-I Lin Dec 2012

Mohist Approach To The Rule-Following Problem, Chung-I Lin

Comparative Philosophy

The Mohist conceives the dao-following issue as "how we can put dao in words and speeches into practice." The dao-following issue is the Mohist counterpart of Wittgenstein's rule-following problem. This paper aims to shed light on the rule-following issue in terms of the Mohist answer to the dao-following problem. The early Mohist takes fa(法, standard)and the later Mohist takes lei(類, analogy)as the key to the dao-following issue. I argue that the way of fa is not viable. Fa comes in various forms, but all of them are regarded as being cut off from everyday life and therefore subject to various …

A Daoist Model For A Kantian Church, Stephen R. Palmquist Dec 2012

A Daoist Model For A Kantian Church, Stephen R. Palmquist

Comparative Philosophy

Although significant differences undoubtedly exist between Daoism and Kant’s philosophy, the two systems also have some noteworthy similarities. After calling attention to a few such parallels and sketching the outlines of Kant’s philosophy of religion, this article focuses on an often-neglected feature of the latter: the four guiding principles of what Kant calls an “invisible church” (universality, purity, freedom, and unchangeableness). Numerous passages from Lao Zi’s classic text, Dao-De-Jing, seem to uphold these same principles, thus suggesting that they can also be interpreted as core features of a Daoist philosophy of life. A crucial difference, however, is that members of …

Using Marine Snails To Teach Biogeography And Macroevolution: The Role Of Larvae And Dispersal Ability In The Evolution And Persistence Of Species, Jonathan R. Hendricks Dec 2012

Using Marine Snails To Teach Biogeography And Macroevolution: The Role Of Larvae And Dispersal Ability In The Evolution And Persistence Of Species, Jonathan R. Hendricks

Faculty Publications

While some marine animals are capable of traveling great distances, many have limited mobility as adults and spend the majority of their lifetimes in a small geographical area or may even be cemented to a single place. While it might be expected that species with limited mobility would have small geographic distributions, some nevertheless occur over very large areas. This is the case for some marine snails (gastropods). A key factor that impacts the geographic distribution of marine snails is the type of larvae they have during the phase of their life history that follows hatching from an egg. Because …

Differential Expression Of Alpha 4 Integrins On Effector Memory T Helper Cells During Bordetella Infections. Delayed Responses In Bordetella Pertussis, Tzvia Abramson, Tuan M. Nguyen, Dipti Ravindra, Brian Kwong, Sana Waheed, Ryan Ferguson, Nicole Tarlton, Victoria Wu, Christopher S. Sequeira, Martina Bremer

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Bordetella pertussis (B. pertussis) is the causative agent of whooping cough, a respiratory disease that is reemerging worldwide. Mechanisms of selective lymphocyte trafficking to the airways are likely to be critical in the immune response to this pathogen. We compared murine infection by B. pertussis, B. parapertussis, and a pertussis toxin-deleted B. pertussis mutant (BpΔPTX) to test the hypothesis that effector memory T-helper cells (emTh) display an altered pattern of trafficking receptor expression in B. pertussis infection due to a defect in imprinting. Increased cell recruitment to the lungs at 5 days post infection (p.i.) with B. parapertussis, and to …

Strike Mechanics Of An Ambush Predator: The Spearing Mantis Shrimp, M. Devries, E. Murphy, S. Patek Nov 2012

Strike Mechanics Of An Ambush Predator: The Spearing Mantis Shrimp, M. Devries, E. Murphy, S. Patek

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Ambush predation is characterized by an animal scanning the environment from a concealed position and then rapidly executing a surprise attack. Mantis shrimp (Stomatopoda) consist of both ambush predators (‘spearers’) and foragers (‘smashers’). Spearers hide in sandy burrows and capture evasive prey, whereas smashers search for prey away from their burrows and typically hammer hard-shelled, sedentary prey. Here, we examined the kinematics, morphology and field behavior of spearing mantis shrimp and compared them with previously studied smashers. Using two species with dramatically different adult sizes, we found that strikes produced by the diminutive species, Alachosquilla vicina, were faster (mean peak …

The Role Of Information Dissemination In Attaining Food Security In Katsina State, Nigeria, Yusuf El-Ladan Ibrahim, Lawal Iro Sani

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper explores the values and usefulness of information dissemination as it affects food security in Nigeria, particularly in Katsina state. Information has been and would continue to play a vital role in any national development and growth. Agricultural information provision and dissemination is a must for every responsible government because it is only when farmer were informed, that they will be able to take a rational decision and produce enough to feed the state and the nation in general, consequently meeting the goal set by the MDG. Food security has been identified as the inability of a nation to …

Textbooks, Libraries & Students: An Evolving Partnership, Susan Kendall, Mary Nino, Rae Ann Stahl

Faculty and Staff Publications

A recent Government Accountability Office study stated that close to 40% of college students decide against buying textbooks. Rising textbook and tuition costs have created an economic crisis for students that has dramatic consequences for their success and ultimate retention and graduation rates. As a result, libraries and faculty are investigating how to incorporate library resources and open educational resources (OER) into required course materials. A new San Jose State University (SJSU) initiative known as “Affordable Learning $olutions” works to provide class resources for students by utilizing library owned electronic resources. This session will explain how the SJSU Library partnered …

Digital Repositories And Open Access: Information Without Limits, Crystal Goldman, Silke P. Higgins Nov 2012

Digital Repositories And Open Access: Information Without Limits, Crystal Goldman, Silke P. Higgins

Faculty and Staff Publications

For many libraries, the Digital Repository has become the main storage center for materials created by the community they serve. Such materials can include important historical records, local newspapers, community newsletters, as well as articles, presentations, data sets, images, videos and other multimedia items. In this way, the repository takes on a central role in placing free, open access materials into the hands of the public.

While many repositories are currently managed by universities, their benefits reach beyond the walls of academia to include K-12 students as well as the public at large. Thus, all librarians are encouraged to utilize …
