Alcohol In The Life Narratives Of Women: Commonalities And Differences By Sexual Orientation, Laurie A. Drabble, K. Trocki

Faculty Publications

Aim: The aim of this study was to explore social representations of alcohol use among women, with a focus on possible differences between sexual minority and heterosexual women. Methods: This qualitative study was part of a larger study examining mediators of heavier drinking among sexual minority women (lesbian identified, bisexual identified, and heterosexual identified with same sex partners) compared to heterosexual women based on the National Alcohol Survey. Qualitative in-depth life history interviews were conducted over the telephone with 48 women who had participated in the 2009–2010 National Alcohol Survey, including respondents representing different sexual orientation groups. Questions explored the …

Curriculum Exchange: Visualization Tools And Online Courses For Teaching About Earthquakes, Sandra Seale, Thalia Anagnos

Faculty Publications

As part of a national consortium of universities practicing and doing research in earthquake engineering, our site has developed several videos for use in outreach and education. Visualization tools are extremely useful when teaching about how earthquakes shake the ground and the response of buildings to that shaking. Here we present videos that are targeted to specific audiences: (1) Animations of the response of two model buildings to two earthquakes are targeted at grade 6-16 students. The videos were created with data recorded on these test structures from the two earthquakes. The two events were both located directly below the …

The Effect Of Water Temperature On Drilling And Ingestion Rates Of The Dogwhelk Nucella Lapillus Feeding On Mytilus Edulis Mussels In The Laboratory, Luke P. Miller Jun 2013

The Effect Of Water Temperature On Drilling And Ingestion Rates Of The Dogwhelk Nucella Lapillus Feeding On Mytilus Edulis Mussels In The Laboratory, Luke P. Miller

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

In highly seasonal intertidal habitats, changes in temperature through the year may drive substantial shifts in feeding and growth rates of organisms. For the dogwhelk Nucella lapillus, attacking and consuming Mytilus edulis mussels can take hours or days, depending on temperature. Handling time of dogwhelks feeding on mussels is therefore greatly affected by ocean temperature. I recorded attack time in the laboratory, partitioned into drilling and consumption time, for juvenile dogwhelks across a range of seawater temperatures representative of field seawater temperatures during the main growing seasons of summer and autumn. The combined length of a drilling attack and …

Library Cartoons: A Literature Review Of Library-Themed Cartoons, Caricatures, And Comics, Julia B. Chambers May 2013

Library Cartoons: A Literature Review Of Library-Themed Cartoons, Caricatures, And Comics, Julia B. Chambers

School of Information Student Research Journal

To understand differing views of past events, historians, political science scholars, and sociologists have analyzed political and editorial cartoons with themes ranging from elections to fiscal policy to human rights. Yet scant research has been dedicated to cartoons with library themes. The author of this paper examines peer-reviewed literature on the subject of library cartoons, including historical background, analysis of recent themes, and arguments for promoting library-themed cartoons, caricatures, and comics. The author finds a significant gap in the literature on this topic and concludes that information professionals would benefit from a comprehensive content analysis of library-themed cartoons to enhance …

Use Of Internet By The Researchers Of Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izzatnagar, Bareilly: A Survey, Gyan Prakash

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The internet has emerged as the most powerful medium for storage and retrieval of information. Since past few years many online information sources like e-journals, e-books, e-data-bases have increased considerably. The traditional library systems are going to transform into digital library systems. Information-seeking is important for researchers of agricultural sciences who have access to many dedicated electronic resources. World Wide Web was the most frequently used internet services and facilities. The present study is questionnaire based survey 150 questionnaires were distributed among the researchers of IVRI Deemed University during the academic year 2008-09. 135 Questionnaire were returned back, and after …

The Crisis Of Secularism: How Democracy Fuels Moral Panics And Religious Fundamentalism, Pedja Ilic May 2013

The Crisis Of Secularism: How Democracy Fuels Moral Panics And Religious Fundamentalism, Pedja Ilic

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

While identifying humanity’s most cherished ideals, there is one notion that ultimately supplants all others: the notion of freedom. The concept itself and its encompassing rhetoric have been utilized ad nauseam by virtually all contemporary social orders to validate the levels of civilizational maturity and, perhaps more importantly, to set goals to which the same should strive. However, irrespective of its categorical position at the very summit of conscious human existence, its interpretational elasticity allows for a diminishing number of concessions. This paper offers critique and examines interactions between multiculturalism, cultural relativism, religion, and secularism within contemporary Western societies. It …

Entropy And State Visualization For Automation Design And Evaluation Prototyping Toolset, Rohit Deshmukh Apr 2013

Entropy And State Visualization For Automation Design And Evaluation Prototyping Toolset, Rohit Deshmukh

Master's Projects

Automation Design and Evaluation Prototyping Toolset (ADEPT) is a plugin developed on the Eclipse Rich Client Platform(RCP). ADEPT can be used by domain expert designers to create and modify testable prototypes. The aim of the project is to enhance ADEPT by adding dynamic visualizations to the ADEPT user interface. Three types of visualizations are implemented in this project. Table view is helpful to view the hierarchy and nesting of Logic Tables. The State visualization displays all the states in a selected Logic Table. Entropy visualization is a subset of State visualization and displays limited number of states having lowest Entropy …

Motion Learning With Biomechanics Principles, Jing Sun Apr 2013

Motion Learning With Biomechanics Principles, Jing Sun

Master's Projects

This project gets the advantage of both biomechanics analysis and Kinect motion capturing, and develops a sports improvement solution with coaching evaluation. It focuses on sample movement patterns to do data quantity and quality analysis. And by combining with professional dedicated bio-mechanical principles, it is able to implement real time motion tracking, coaching and evaluation while motion capturing. We calculate some basic but important parameters from captured motion data, such as the rotation and translation of body segments, and then analyze motion flaws that hid behind it. So a deterministic model for specific movement pattern can be constructed as a …
